  2. I really enjoyed that but agree something sounds off aboot the guitars. My ears tell me that they're just trying to do too much with their tone. Thirteen's point about listening to how old metal players did it is very valid, as most modern players get hung up on gear and effects and forget the basics of how a guitar has to sound (to work with other instruments in a mix).
  3. I went to see it on hype alone, knowing nothing about it. It totally had me fooled, and by the end I was freaked the f&*^ out. Mind you, I was a bit of a horror buff at that point in my life (was in my early 20s). But I've not seen it since. Why would I? It's all about the ending, and knowing the ending spoils repeat viewings.
  4. tPT is no Frost. Frost* are at that next tier in pop/crossover prog, especially after Falling Satellites earlier this year (which is when I finally got on board). But I dig their other two albums as well. I won't even be going back to Your Wilderness. Did my dozen or so listens for the review and into the deleted folder. The first three tracks are good (note GOOD, not great) and the rest are a real mixed bag. Nothing cringe worthy, just a lot of meh.
  5. I'm in the process of reviewing this album right now. Agree about Gavin's presence breathing life into the band. Unfortunately my patience for PT clones is wearing thin and this outfit really doesn't offer much in terms of virtuosity or cleverness. If anything I'm disappointed as I kinda expected this could be their breakthrough album in terms of prog cred. Fwiw - I didn't even know Gavin was playing until I read it later. First pass through the album i picked up on his style (especially his cymbal playing/use). He's quite a unique, skilled drummer.
  6. The show's timing for me is bad (9PM EST). Hopefully I can catch one someday. Do you archive the broadcasts for listening later?
  7. Most of the surround releases come with a 2 channel/stereo high res mix. Prior discussion has some info on those: http://www.therushforum.com/index.php?/topic/98839-rush-dvd-a-51-mixes/
  8. I used to have some of his material but like both of you, I don't actively seek out/listen to it much anymore.
  9. Youtube is long on examples of his playing, so obviously that's a good place to start. He was good and very influential. You also need to put him in historical context. He opened many doors for the bass as a 'lead' instrument, and was of a select few bassists who were 'known'. Even now there's still many fewer bassists that music fans know by name versus, say drummers or especially guitarists.
  10. I know someone who created a facebook group and uses that to promote their weekly prog show. They interact with the listeners and give info about the artists being played in real time using the facebook feed. Another outlet/avenue to consider. His show has grown quite a bit. He tends to find a lot of new talent browsing Bandcamp and reaches out to members of the bands he features, this draws them into the fold as well as any fans they have.
  11. I was tempted to get the boxed set, as THRAK is one of my most appreciated (and played) albums. But it was a lot more than I've ever spent on any one recording. So I got the surround mix format. Would be interested in knowing what other goodies that were in the box would be of interest from those sessions. I had Vroom and Vroom Vroom at the time of release, but think they didn't make the cut when I dumped a bunch of discs/dvds a few years ago. I don't recall the Vroom takes to be anything special. What are you enjoying most from the boxed set? [as a side note: I don't really care for the new mix, so it's only been played a handful of times before I decided I will just continue to play the original]
  12. Thanks, youtube has the original and remaster. Listening to the remaster now, it reminds me of early Floyd and perhaps a bit of Tull (and not just because of the flute). I can hear how this was edgy for that era in rock.
  13. According to this thread: a minority. And the majority of the minority apparently used to enjoy him until he was overplayed, then they eventually got sick of him. It's a clickbait thread - fraroc is good at these. Then explain to me why the minute Phil Collins decided to make music again, a petition was made to get him to re-retire? It's just a fact, Phil Collins is so unfairly hated by most people. Do you like Phil Collins a lot, or are you trying to justify your personal observation that many people hate him? I do actually agree with you somewhat. From my own limited experiences, Phil is treated a bit unkindly by many music fans and often accused of selling out. But I wouldn't say that's most people. Heck, most people don't even know who Phil Collins is because times have changed and not near as many people pay much attention to their parents music as some of us would like to see. The truth is Phil decided to do his own thing outside of Genesis that became hugely successful in the 80s and early 90s, and certain groups of people either disliked his overexposure, disliked his much simpler and more mainstream pop music, disliked his voice, or any combination of the three. But his time in the spotlight came to an end and maybe even the majority of those people probably stopped caring because they had moved on. I can't tell from experience, because I was born after all of that, but I can tell from research and discussion that that is closer to the full story than simply assuming he was and still is almost universally hated. It's like saying everyone hates Coldplay even though they have industry and critical respect as well as tons and tons of fans and two or three times as many people who just enjoy their music when it comes on the radio or at a party. They may have a stigma, but they aren't universally hated, same goes for PC. Sorry for the rant, my line of thought got a little out of hand. I will ask again though, do you like Phil Collins a lot, or are you trying to justify your personal observation that many people hate him? Or is there some other reason for your posts in this thread? I universally hate Coldplay. OK? ;) That's a good example of an actual fact.
  14. It shouldn't be too serious if he has a return date set. I kinda remember being at an Allman Brothers show. :smoke:
  15. I still have a copy of Face Value, but most of his output is "pop". It's a tough pill for the music community to swallow when you branch off from a respected and successful band such as Genesis [seemingly riding your fame from having been involved in that band] and release (mostly) radio friendly schlock. Look at what Peter Gabriel, Sting, Roger Waters, or David Gilmour have done as solo artists compared to Collins. Night/day. Here's a decent list to compare: https://www.buzzfeed...9en9#.nfGRE16d1
  16. It would be an awesome thread if people posted examples of their favorite Hawkwind material. It's not a band I have spent much time with (just random tracks here/there over the years), so I'd be eager to get a crash course in.
  17. Big Wreck wasn't even mentioned in this thread.
  18. Only in the box set at the moment: http://store.moderbo...oducts/box-set/ Well that sucks. Certainly not worth getting the whole box. While I can let the fact it's not a BluRay slide, but it adds insult to injury that it's not even a DVD. How does an Audio CD 5.1 even work? If it's truly an "Audio CD" (and it's not a misprint) then it's likely a DTS disc. They were popular as a surround format 10 years ago. They're a functional way of getting the surround mix distributed, but not of quite the same quality (since it's compressed).
  19. She can sing but her voice isn't right for the music. The whole package seems like... well, packaged. They're a record company's idea of what a hip sounding metal band would be. I can hear the drooling mid level accountants now... "People are going to suck this shit up". Apparently they have (I've not heard of them, and now I know why).
  20. [listening the video] Not doing much for me. It's a mix of styles [djent, prog metal, classical, general meh] I'm just not digging. Her vocals aren't strong enough to cut through/rise above the music. It just sounds out of place/forced. For some reason I keep hearing heavy Devin Townsend influence in here. (?)
