  1. I was exactly where I am now, sitting in the office at work doing a night shift. I got a Facebook message from a friend. I was pissed at him for sending me this obvious lie, until I googled it and found out it was true. Didn't get much done that night afterwards I recall.
  2. I got into Rush in 1992 and felt a total fraud when talking about them to people then. Of course, that was before the internet but do you know what? All the Rush fans back then were just pleased I'd found the band and were incredibly kind and helpful - much like the denizens of this forum. I actually envy you in a way, you're getting to discover one of the best bands ever for the first time. How does it get better than that?

    Marathon

Surely everyone knows it's about chocolate bars?
  4. Sounds like a lot more than one “most treasured item”. All the LPs and that silver edition CA hardback vs each other, which ONE would you keep? Oh the music every time :) If you asked for just one LP... probably Counterparts. It took a lot of finding and i do like that album :)
  5. My complete LP vinyl collection and the silver edition hardback of Clockwork Angels :)
  6. Has to be Caress of Steel for me. I like it as an album but it's the one I listen to the least. It's weird, because if I had to rate it I'd say it was better than Test for Echo, but I listen to that more. Am I the only one who LOVES Dog Years?
  7. Went to see it 2 nights ago. I remember the exact scene you mean but didn't make the connection.... now i have to go see it again to check :D
  8. Rush fans are the best. And this forum has the best of the best :) This is a beautiful thing to do. Someone waved their magic wand and changed your heart overnight :)
  9. The sound production on the blu ray leaves something to be desired. Drums and vocals are recorded about right but Alex's guitar lacks any kind of power and is way too low in the mix. This is exscerbated by the muddy recording of Geddy's bass which is both too high in the mix AND has a nasty hump in the lower octave which dominates the sound totally. It's a bit better with the Gibson bass than the fender but it's there through the whole show. Frankly, the sound production on all the filmed shows since Snakes & Arrows Live has been poor at best. This disk can go on the rarely watched pile with Time machine and Clockwork Angels Live. A missed opportunity in my book.
  10. I'd like to know. Whoever did T4E needs a punch in the head.
  11. Just got Test for Echo today. Very disappointing... the mix is compressed, muddled and flat. Considering the quality of the pressing and the cost it's rather sad they didn't do a decent vinyl master. The original CD and the recent CD remaster both sound better :(
  12. The whole heavyweight vinyl scam is nothing but rubbish. I have old records form the 80's made from recycled vinyl that weigh as little as 80g. Thats right, eight oh. And they sound just as good as anything else. the trick in good vinyl is to get a good master and cut it correctly, then press it properly. The weight of the vinyl puck is compleltely inconsequential.
  13. In reality I actually run two turntables, with very different cartridges. My STD / Jelco arm table features a Decca London Super Gold: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v729/smegger68/DSC00004.jpg Has viceral dynamics and an in your face presentation. Needs a damped tonearm to work properly though, and not the best tracking cartridge in the world, but SO good on rockier material. The other TT is a Nottingham Analogue Spacedeck with a Michell technoarm and a Goldring Excel M/C cartridge: http://cgim.audiogon.com/i/vs/i/f/1094317685.jpg Quite the opposite of the Decca - liquid, velvety smooth vocals and lanquid acoustics make for a brilliant cart for a more laid back mood.
  14. I personally favour the Koetsu Tiger Eye Platinum, a snip at a mere $13,000 US. http://www.stoneaudio.co.uk/resources/products/image1/koetsu-platignum-tiger-eye.jpg of course, Koetsu do proper high end cartridges if you want to spend a bit more..... :)

    Vinyl Wishes

It's real provenance seems to be in doubt. It's either a bootleg or a very limited promotional run. Either way there is no proper vinyl release of T4E.
  16. Between the years 1978 - 1992, The Fall were my favourite band. For some reason, when the Shift-Work album came out in '92 I didn't buy it. I practically stopped listening to them for the next 9 years, until in 2001 I saw an ad saying they were playing locally. i went to the gig and it re-ignited my love for them. Bought up the 90's album's I'd missed and had a great time catching up. Still enjoying them now. Point is, you can have too much of a good thing. Sometimes a long break is exactly what's needed :)
  17. Would probably have looked something like this: http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/z437/drbirdsong/Steel02.jpg
  18. I just realised it's actually playing my copy of 'counterparts' in the picture :haz:
  19. NAD C555 isn't it? Nice Rega arm and a good simple design with much potential for upgrading. You could quite easily spend a lot of money on a good cartridge for this deck without shaming it, it's basically a Rega Planar 2 rebadged. I have a Rega Planar 3 fitted with a Michell Technoarm and a Goldring Excel M/C cartridge which sounds very nice indeed :)
  20. A couple of my tables: Lenco 88 / LAD Jelco 370D / Decca London Super Gold http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v729/smegger68/DSC00006.jpg Technics SL1210 MkII / SME 3009 Series IIIs / Shure V15 Type III http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v729/smegger68/1210IISMEIIIsV15III.jpg
  21. That AT is popular with a lot of people who weren't into vinyl the first time round and think they are getting a technics SL-1200 on the cheap. Don't buy it. It's cheaply made, has a low torque motor which causes high wow and flutter figures and all the weight in it comes from a block of iron placed in the base, to give it an impression of hefty build quality. If you are serious about vinyl, look for an old Dual, Technics or Pioneer deck in good condition. Check the Vinyl Engine website and ask the learned members on there about decks you find for sale. It's a big subject and beginners need to negotiate quite a steep learning curve before they can avoid the many pitfalls. Good luck, and if you want any more personal advice feel free to PM me. I've currently got 5 turntables in rotation and have owned a deck since 1975 :)
  22. 10 Things one probably SHOULD say: 1/ The Clockwork Angels novel is bloody awful. 2/ Geddy has real issues singing live now. 3/ The last 2 concert videos are not vey good, partly because of point 2 and partly because they are not well produced. 4/ CA is very poorly mixed. Especially the drums. 5/ Rush fans who don't like certain albums or periods need to relax around people who DO like them. 6/ DW drums & Fender basses belong in the bin. Ludwig drums and Rickenbacker basses need to come back. 7/ The boys need to stop touring as much as they have. We want more studio albums to take us into the future, after they have called it quits. 8/ The first album is bloody good. It's actually a shame that the Rutsey period wasn't a bit longer (say another 2 albums). Not that I would have sacrificed FBN or COS you understand! 9/ We need a proper vinyl release of TFE. 10/ The merch needs to have a proper European outlet so that it doesn't cost so much over here.
