  1. Season 3's Who Watches the Watchers was the episode that convinced me TNG was moving out of the shadow of TOS.

    "The Picard"

    Great stuff.

I agree. That is one of my favorites. TNG was getting really strong at that point and the writing was great.

I notice that misstated the Inner Light season. Per Memory Alpha:

"Captain's log, Stardate 45944.1. Following a magnetic wave survey of the Parvenium sector, we have detected an object which we cannot immediately identify."

    Stardate 45944 - that's late in season 5.

I could have sworn it was season 6. Then again, I can't believe it was 25 years ago. :o :codger:

  2. Oh no, Season One is fantastic! They remade The Naked Time! They killed a major character (Tasha Yar)! The sets, scenery, costumes and sounds all held very closely to the original, but are updated to reflect a few decade difference. Season One was closest to Roddenberry's vision, I think.

Sure you have to deal with Wesley (Weasley) - but he's not so bad really.

And, I liked Dr. Pulaski (after she got off her high horse about Data). I prefer a ship doctor who challenges the captain. Dr. Beverly and Picard had this weird history and he felt all this guilt for sending Wesley's dad Jack, (Picard's best friend) to his death while he had a crush on his wife. I think Crusher was good, but Pulaski was a better doctor.

Inner Light is season six. The episodes had started to become a little hit and miss by this point in the run, imo. Berman/Bragga influence.

  3. Scotch fanatic checking in.

CygnusGal, you've tasted some quality single-malts there! You might find some of the articles at scotchnoob.com to be of value. Or scotchhobbyist.com.

Eventually, you're going to have to explore the wonderful world of Islay (EYE-luh) scotches. These are the ones that are often described as smoky and peaty, and are sometimes compared to bandaids, iodine, campfires, and formaldehyde :D

Islays to look for: Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig.

Thanks, Chronos. So, something in a monkey blood would be great, then. :D It couldn't be any stranger than Moxie Cola (which tastes like carbonated Listerine - did you guys put *any* sugar in this stuff???) and people seem to like that for some reason.

So they get smoother with age, right? I've looked at some of the 15s or 17s. Would I notice a big difference from say, a Macallan 12 to a Macallan 15? I think they have a Macallan 17 (but maybe it's a 15) at the store and the price differential is substantial.

It is a far more complex and interesting spirit than I ever realized. :eh:

I didn't know it was so beautiful... I didn't know...

  4. I'm beginning my adventure into this new world (well, new to me). :)

So far, I've tried, The Macallan 12, The Glenmorangie 10, The Belvanie 12. I'm finding I'm partial to Aberlour 12 ... very tasty.

A lady that's into scotch? Now that's sexy!!!

At keyboard - can type now...

Yeah, it mixes really well with Sprite. ;)

That's a joke. Neat. Only neat. A water back is acceptable, preferably spring water, but the mouth is not a mixing bowl. I work with a fellow has been very helpful with my edumacation.

I had a friend who asked for a splash of water in her Aberlour. I said no. She asked for a water back and then put a capful in the Aberlour! :o

    She gets Chivas next visit.

  6. I loved Darmok (and Jillad at Tanagra, on the ocean, his arms open wide, etc.). It's just a variation of Enemy Mine, which is all riffing on Gilgamesh.

...there is no new thing under the sun. - Shakespeare (as riffed from Ecclesiastes)

Inner Light is the reason I fell in love with TNG. It is a gold standard episode for me and one of the finest pieces of writing I have seen on television.

    :)

  7. Jacob's Ladder because it's being played live. Hemispheres because they are playing anything of it at all. Anthem because the R30 Overture doesn't count. Lakeside Park because it's from Caress of Steel. What You're Doing because I've only heard recordings. Natural Science because at my home town show they played that into Jacob's Ladder into Hemispheres. Click on my profile and you will see these are my 3 favorite songs.

Yeah, I know what you mean about JL. Personally, it hasn't been one of my favourites, but it was really cool to see them play it live. I appreciate the song now more than I ever have because I saw them play it.

And, then TCE and Xanadu and Prelude and, of course, Cygnus X-1 (my favourite) and Lakeside Park and a full version of Anthem and What You're Doing and then the Garden Road riff ... and then I had to gather pieces of my exploded head and find the exit.

  8. That might be the greatest Rush photo I have seen. :ebert: Wow! Look at the smiles!

That is a classic. Thanks for posting this one, Snaked.

In the past, I've asked the question here and elsewhere: "Suppose one night Neil came to the front of the stage and spoke to the audience....?" That scenario almost happened!!

The lips aren't moving, but he is speaking to the audience. He's very warm and engaging. He's thanking us and showing us his feelings. Tonight, we are not strangers; tonight, we are long awaited friends.

  9. A Day In The Life

Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts VI - IX

    Beach Baby

I've never seen Rush play these songs live. And, since there will likely be no next tour, these are the songs that I choose.

The production of A Day In The Life will be astounding.

Alex should *shred* the guitar part and watching Geddy handle the pedal bass tones during the keyboard section should be interesting during Shine On.

And ... who doesn't want to hear Geddy sing Beach Baby? :eh:

  11. Well ...

LA is getting Losing It tonight guaranteed. I know for certain that they will play this song, for I have seen the photo. When I was at the Boston show, I saw a picture (that I wasn't supposed to see for the photo was not to exist) from someone very loosely affiliated with the tour. I saw string players at rehearsal and venue names and every venue name on that photo has aligned with reality. Toronto, Newark, NYC, Vancouver, LA ... Newark??? yep, they got it.

I don't know who will be performing it tonight

  12. He's just being a troll. Alex himself said most likely there is another album or two.

Alex has said that, but I keep feeling like it's just a way of denying the "Last Tour" moniker that R40 has become. To even record new material is going to mean Alex and Neil have to stay in reasonably good shape; regularly practice, and not have their infirmities get in the way.

I know Geddy has this expensive new studio, and I have every expectation that we will be hearing solo stuff from him, but I have real doubts that Alex or Neil will play any significant part in it.

I'd view any new Rush material or performances as icing on the cake, but I honestly think when they leave the stage on Saturday, that's the last of Rush as a performing or even recording band we're likely to see.

    :goodone:

The way I see it, anything we've gotten from Rush after August 1997 has been a gift and icing on the cake.

I think Rush is over. But, it's been a fantastic ride, so I'm okay with that. :)

  13. Why did they write it in Gb (G-flat)?!? Thanks, guys.

In practical terms, that means two things:

    1) if you have a chart, it is written in Gb which means there are six flats (six!). If you're playing on a piano, you have one white key available (the F).

    2) as F is your only natural note (six flats!), no open strings for you!

Vital Signs used to drive me crazy for a similar reason (it is written in Eb - 3 flats), which makes the verses labor intensive to play (oh well, deal with it, is what an old bass mentor used to tell me) but also makes the break/bass-solo-ish type thing very cool to play. And, it sounds weird in other keys.

A dream come true for Jonathon! Congratulations to him! Wow!

  14. The final show airs in the U.S. on BBC America on 7/13 @ 21:00 (9pm) Eastern Time.

Pachyderm, missing audience, Hampster and Capt. Slow looking a little lost without the pompous gasbag. It has to be all three for the chemistry to work. The U.S. version is lackluster and while the Australian version is entertaining, nothing matches U.K. Top Gear. I hear Chris Evans has been named and Jodie Kidd is in consideration for one of the presenter slots, but the show is over. The boys were completely puerile, but very, very entertaining.

A lot of good years from Top Gear and I will really miss this show. I don't think I will ever see anything top what they did to that Toyota Hi-Lux. Remarkable.

    :ebert: :notworthy:

  15. I watched that damn Eagles documentary on Netflix. I went in feeling kind of indifferent about the Eagles and came away *hating* the Eagles (and I don't use that word lightly). I still like Joe Walsh (his body of work stands on its own), but, boy do I hate the Eagles now. I still like Randy Meisner and like Bernie Leadon and Timothy B. Schmidt seems rather innocuous.

I've also learned that Ginger Baker is a bit of an ass and one should beware of him.

I did not hate The Eagles after this.

I hated Don Henley and Glenn Frey.

    Greddy, F'N Hippies.

Yes, they are the worst aspects of the the Eagles. Felder never got the respect he deserved in that band and Henley - Frey sure do think a lot of themselves. Henley is so good he couldn't handle music theory and dropped out of North Texas (of course, he's sold many million more albums than I have, so I really can't talk) and Frey is just a pompous ass.

    JMO, of course.

I notice we have an intersecting show! January 19, 1988 - Reunion Arena - Dallas, Texas (Tommy Shaw)

  17. I really liked the set list to be honest. I like the fact that they basically ignored the era I am most ambivalent about, PoW to T4E, performing only Animate and Roll the Bones. And I liked that they pulled out quite a few surprise tracks, like Hemispheres and Cygnus X-1, even if some of them aren't necessarily my favorite song from the album they represented.

I'm sure if I listen to a soundboard or to the inevitable live album there will be some clunkers from Geddy, but in the moment, being there, I thought he sounded amazing. Which is all that really counts.

I agree. This is perhaps the finest show I've seen Rush play. I nearly cried when they played Lakeside Park after my face melted off from Cygnus X-1 (who knew there was a drum solo at the centre of a black hole :eh: )

My only wish was that they'd played La Villa. I know I'm in the minority, but I've never been a big Jacob's Ladder fan (but it did rock, plodding though it is). Oh to see what they've been playing in Toronto, Newark, what's coming up in NYC, Vancouver, LA. So, okay two wishes, La Villa and Losing It.

:hi: Rick :hi: Hope you're well. :)
