  1. Counterparts? Do you hate your kids or do you want them to hate Rush? Counterparts is what got me hooked on Rush. To each his own, but that album remains by far the band's worst for me. It delayed my transformation from a casual fan to a hardcore one for about 2 years. I'll never forgive it. It's much better than the two that followed it. Next 2? Do you actually like Counterparts (Rush's worst albums by far) and Snakes & Arrows (Rush's second worst by far)? I guess it makes sense in a "style over substance" kind of way. Oh, I thought that I liked those albums. I must have been wrong. Thanks for setting that straight. just ignore him. He's got a vendetta against Counterparts. His member title should be Farts On Counterparts, because that's what he does anytime someone brings it up. I love that album. Even SOL lost its clunker status with me. It's all good. Love almost all of S&A as well. :haz:  He entered into a thread to attack an argument I've never made. You're advice is spot on. Sorry about that. I just get frustrated when people state opinions as facts. As for the OP: Congrats! It must be a great feeling to be introducing your child to the wide world of art and music!

  3. :eyeroll: Let's not go crazy. Yeah, instrumentally, Alex and Geddy still rule, but, to my ears, this drummer really owns Neil on this song, at least, anymore. I agree. Neil never really played Working Man very well. It's just a simple loose groove that he could never really get the hang of. The drummer from american idol just played a more contemporary version of what was on the album, and he did a very good job of adding his own flavor without detracting from the song. Everytime Neil plays Working Man he throws in all of these groove-killing fills that the song doesn't need.
  4. When I was 11 I wasted so many quarters playing that crap...
  5. Opinons are like assholes everybody has one! Such a typical newbie response! LOL! Are you 16 years old? Are you a Rush virgin? Uptight and out of touch. I don't play by the rules. It's my thread so hijacking is ok. GO A'S! If your going to use a quote make sure you can spell properly..... "Opinions"......next time come up with something original. Rush virgin?,.LOL?,newbie?......who sounds like a 16 yr? Not that it matters.....first show was 38 yrs. ago An anagram for "opinions" is "onions." You stink! LOL! I majored in English. What irony eh? When I first joined this forum many years ago many thought I was an immature little prick. Guess things never change. Even my wife of 17 years still thinks that I'm a teen-ager with a little bit of gold and a pager. Signed, NWA NEW WORLD ASSHOLE! That's me! Forums are so lame. Welcome To The Club. Signed, VANDENBERG I've always admired your insane posting style. I never would've seen that NWA reference coming.
  6. Great job on this list! Sorry for not ranking the albums on my list. Must've missed that part of the instructions. Red Barchetta is not my favorite Rush song (it's up there though), but I can certainly see the argument to be made for it being their best.
  7. I happen to really like the way neil's drums sound live these days. I think that a lot of people hate the DW kits because they are new. If it's not from before 1982, then it must suck.
  8. It's just for the intro. As soon as the guitar starts, you can hear the sample cut out. Just them trying to achieve a desired effect.
  9. "Just between the ice ages, anyway I want to talk, but I haven't got too much to say I don't mean to be so nihilistic Forgive me if I seem to be too realistic" - My Favorite Headahe
  10. I like what he was doing in the 80's. Just as technical as before but with more of a percussive flavor. Tracks like The Weapon, High Water and Scars have particularly outstanding drumming to me.
  11. I've done the full studio album marathon twice. The second time only took two days (Rush-Permanent Waves on day one, the rest on day two) I've also marathoned through Radiohead and Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson. I've gotta do another one of those soon.
  12. That sounds like most every famous drummer I know. They get popular in one genre and pretty much stick to it, unless we're talking about a studio musician, who would have more experience playing in different musical environments, but they're usually not as well known. Well, yeah, most musicians are like that. Which is why "best ever" lists are so dumb. It's popularity and musical folk wisdom. I know a few people who know way less about drummers or Rush than me, but they would argue with me about weather Neil is in fact the greatest drummer ever. It seems that John Bonham, Keith Moon and Neil Peart are consistently at the top of these lists because to a lot of people, those are the only three drummers that they know by name (except for Ringo Starr, but musical folk wisdom leads many to dismiss him as not being very good). Now guys like Dave Grohl, Travis Barker and Tre Cool are starting to show up more frequently because they have achieved enough exposure to be widely recognized. It doesn't matter that guys like Benny Greb, Dave Weckl or Vinnie Colaiuta are technically better in all measurable respects (speed, technique, adaptability), they are session guys who don't have broad mainstream notoriety.
  13. I find the "Neil PURT is da best drummer evar!" stuff to be very tiresome. First of all, there is no such thing. Drumming is art. Art is subjective. Therefore there can be no best drummer. Secondly, :finbar:, Neil doesn't even achieve my personal criteria for drumming greatness. As far as I'm concerned, a world class drummer will work in any situation. Neil doesn't strike me as being a particularly adaptive musician. I mean, just listen to him playing Working Man: he over-plays like crazy and does things that are, to my ears, un-musical and distasteful. His Jazz is pretty weak. I know that jazz is not his primary genre, but he's been attempting to incorporate it into his solos for about 15 years now, with tepid results. Meanwhile you have guys like Buddy Rich or Benny Greb who most certainly could play anything that Neil plays, and basically everything else, with authenticity. All that said, Neil is a very vital component in Rush that gives them their identity. Likewise, Rush gives Neil his identity. EDIT: To clarify, I think that Neil Peart is the best drummer for Rush, I'm just skeptical about his versatility and credentials as a "Greatest Ever" candidate.
  14. I'm disappointed. Walmart is about as evil of a company as you can find.
  15. I must say that's pretty damn sick. And I appreciate the Black Oak Arkansas sample.
  16. http://news.2112.net/ http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/index.php ^Here are some great places to look Welcome to the board!
  17. It's pretty widely accepted by people who play bass that Rickenbackers are very hard to play. I imagine that the ease of use would be a major factor. Plus, the Fender Jazz is a versatile instrument that kind of falls in the middle between others he's used, so it's a reasonable enough substitute for the sounds he needs live.
  18. I'm biased because I actually got to play the 1974 Slingerland Chrome kit. So I guess that one. BUT..... my favorite drum sound out of Neil would probably be R30. It's such a unique drum sound.
  19. http://www.2112.net/powerwindows/tours/Tours.htm This should be helpful for anybody who thinks that Rush just recently decided to play the same setlist every night.
  20. He could still convince you to stay? Please, for your own safety and the safety of your child, cut this man out of your life completely. No second third forth more chances. No hoops of fire. No nothing. Please. You deserve better than this.
  21. I like Snakes and Arrows a lot actually. It's my second favorite Atlantic-era album. It's all about the guitar on this one. Alex demonstrated his mastery of understated atmospherics all over this thing. EDIT: Just listened to Spindrift. This song gets wayy too much hate.
