  1. QUOTE (Wartypig @ May 28 2011, 09:32 AM) QUOTE (Redshift @ May 28 2011, 06:30 AM) QUOTE (clone @ May 28 2011, 12:17 AM) Over the years having attended dozens of huge gigs with shit sound, I've become more and more convinced that the real problem is cloth-eared sound engineers who, despite having tens of thousands of quids worth of state of the art technology at their fingertips, just can't do their job right. ... In short - it's (imo) incompetence behind the sound desk more than the admitedly lousy natural acoustics of the venue. The equipment is easily capable of producing a much better sound Thank you, that's what I said back on the first page of this thread. I'm not 100% sure about this because of the distance I was away from the desk but I thought I saw the sound engineer at Manchester wearing headphones. What use is that! Must have sounded great at the desk then At thay a Stoke lad then ? weer abite at from owd lad ? No me duck! I'm originally from Hertfordshire but have been up here since 1979. I do support Stoke City tho.

  3. It's not impossible to get excellent sound in arenas, the fact is that Brad Madix isn't up to the job. Almost seems like they don't soundcheck from the quality of sound in the opening numbers and they can't blame any issues on setting the sound for a support group either. Having seen Rush and Roger Waters within 48 hours of each other at the M.E.N. Arena the difference in sound quality was staggering.
  4. QUOTE (owlman @ May 20 2011, 01:11 PM) Reading redshifts take on the gig, I can imagine the sound was more or less the same as sheffield. I think there's an issue with Geddys sound actually. IMO he's got far too much bottom end nowadays, especially now he plays alot of chords. The whole sound just goes into a mish mash of noise! I think you've hit the nail on the head there owlman. A 'mish mash of noise' is a good description of what I felt it sounded like and it may well be the playing of chords that's doing it. I really don't like criticising the guys. After all we went for 12 years without a tour but I'd sacrifice a bit of the visuals for better sound any day. I know that's comparing chalk and cheese but i think you'll know what I mean.
  5. QUOTE (laztozia @ May 20 2011, 07:18 AM) QUOTE (owlman @ May 20 2011, 05:51 AM) Good to hear you enjoyed it. Sheffield was my first rush gig for over 30 years, can't believe why I left it so long, they're so good live! What was Geddys sound like? On monday his bass was very muffled & boomy. Geddy's bass sound was superb. Very clear. There were times throughout the set in which I thought I was listening to a CD. Absolutely brilliant. Out of interest, where were you?
  6. I'm probably in the minority but I found the gig to be a bit like the curate's egg; good in parts. There was a problem with the sound but part of that may also be me. I do expect good sound, even at arenas like the MEN. It is possible and having seen countless groups at that venue over the years it is possible. However, I've seen Rush at that venue on three occasions now (2004, 2007, 2011) and to me the sound has been unacceptable on each occasion. Last night the issue seemed to be with Geddy. The bottom end was very muddy and indistinct. The issue was exacerbated on the post 80's songs in particular. The analogy I gave to my friend was that it was as though someone had got the sound right and then pressed a loudness button!. I sensed that the triggered keyboard parts may also be part of the problem. The second half of the gig was a huge improvement on the first, almost as though a switch had been thrown. The whole of Moving Pictures was sonically excellent. I wasn't impressed by the 1st set. After the first two songs everything went very flat until Freewill. I understand that the group want to spice things up for themselves as well as the audience but for me it was unbalanced. The second set, which of course included Moving Pictures was way better although I don't think much of Caravan and thought Far Cry wasn't a good choice for the concert closer. LVS was excellent but the rearrangement of Working Man didn't hit the sweet spot for me. As ever the lighting was excellent and the guys really threw themselves into the gig but it wasn't a gig I'll recall with affection (MP aside) in years to come. The DVD will look impressive though. All the above is my opinion. I'm not asking for anyone to agree, just be civil in your replies (if any)
