  1. I was thinking about material possessions today, and how I really don’t think of myself as a materially driven or materially-minded person at all (though I do have a small collection of vintage and specialty Martin guitars- but I think about those more from a historical perspective, rather than a material one). Anyway, I thought this would be a fun/interesting question to get input from other people about...do you have any ‘things’ to which you are especially or inexplicably attached? It can be as special or as mundane as you please. For me, it’s my Iris Murdoch books. She wrote 26 novels in a roughly 40-year period from the mid to late 20th century; I own all but one or maybe two of them. Every couple of years, I’ll go on a run of her books and pick maybe three or four of them to revisit. (Right now, I am reading one that I haven’t read in about five years). I think of all the books I own, I could get rid of all of them and just keep hers, and I’d still be just insanely happy with reading in general. I just love her writing.

  2. My photo albums and computer files. They contain my life. Who I am and nearly everything that I have done are in them.

  3. They're the only band for me that challenges Rush for my favorite of all time. They are certainly my favorite metal band of all time. In all of recorded music that I’ve ever heard, though, I’d have to knock them several spots down. There’s just too much music in this world that indispensable to me. But that being said, they certainly thrill me in a way that few other bands ever have.

  4. My books. Definitely. When we moved, I had boxes and boxes and boxes. The lady who helped me took it upon herself to donate my books. I tracked down some of them, others are lost, and I've replaced many of them, and then some. One of the rooms in our place has four bookcases and four wall-to-wall shelves filled with books. This is the second time I've had to do this. My mother was the first one to deep six my book collection. Many of those books were out-of-print books that could not be replaced. One man's treasure is apparently another man's junk.

  6. Hi All: As some of you know, I work as an attorney, so my whole working day is spent thinking about words. I often tell people that words are the only tools that lawyers have in their toolbox. The literal meaning of words, along with the images they connote, are powerful and heavily premeditated elements of any legal document. Persuasive legal writing depends upon a robust - but exactingly accurate - vocabulary. And so it is that the other day, while listening to YYNOT's live cover of No One At The Bridge (it's awesome, check it out on YouTube), I focused on the word "supplication," which is defined as asking or begging for something earnestly. And I realized, while thinking of that word, that I have known its meaning for many decades because of Neil's decision to use it in The Fountain of Lamneth. Neil contributed to my view of life by presenting me with a very different perspective than the one I had those many decades ago. But he also contributed to my life by using words that I didn't know, and that were unlikely to have ever appeared before, or since, in a rock song. What about all of you? Are there any words that Neil taught you?

  7. RIP Contracted in hospital after being admitted for a different issue. So terribly sad. I just found out last week that the same thing happened to a neighbor of mine, about five houses away from me.

  18. Not only that you're not happy and that your life is incomplete, but also that you don't know anything....about anything. I'm 58 years old, I have three college degrees and over 40 years in the working world, and people.....DUMB people.....can not/will not see me as an adult. All because I am single with no children. Relatives, friends & acquaintances, neighbors, co-workers ... I get it from every angle. Over the years, I've refrained from taking a baseball bat to certain nincompoops, so I have that going for me, which is nice. I tell you what, JohnnyBlaze, I'm in a generous mood, and my kids are driving me crazy, so I'll loan them to you for a little while. Now, they're pretty old (16, 18, 21) so they don't need too much maintenance and are already housebroken. You can try to reason with them, try to keep them from killing each other, and try to ignore most of what they're watching on Tik Tok for a couple of weeks and then send them back (not to me though! I'll include my parents' address). This way, if somebody asks you about kids, you can say "No thanks, I've already had kids for a while; it didn't work out." That's sure to be a topic killer, so then you're off the hook! It's a win-win. I've already got the holes drilled in the box, so just say the word, and I'll pay for the third class shipping. Nah. I'd rather use your box but with just a single hole and ship these idiots to the middle of the Amazon. Kids are like housing. If you don't want all the maintenance, don't buy and just rent them. Your answer to the kids question should be: because I don't want to be a dysfunctional parent. When people say kids will change your life, it's true. And there's two sides to that coin. I was late to the game and didn't start collecting wives and kids until I was 32. It ran the entire range of emotions from joy/happiness/pride to loathing. For the longest time I thought I'd never be a parent because it just wasn't something that I felt I needed. So while my kids are young adults and doing well on their own, I often think of how I could easily be retired by now if I didn't indulge in my human collection habit. Mrs. B and I were much later to the marriage game as we were in our 40s. But at no point in my life did I ever think “Gee, i really want kids some day.” I’ve run into several people who pressed me with why I didn’t want kids with the reason,”You’re a good teacher and kids like you. Why not?” I’ve told them thanks but that having kids who like you as a teacher and being a parent aren’t the same thing. Teaching in a school Monday to Friday with the option to quit at any point couldn’t possibly be the same as the lifelong “job” of being a parent. Why the f**k don’t these people grasp that?! And then there have been the family friends who’ve seen me playing with my crazy little nephews and nieces. They go with the “Kids are great, aren’t they? When will you get some of your own?” Now these f***s are a different kind of annoying because they can’t appreciate the experience for what it is: family members (nephews & nieces with their uncle) enjoying each other’s company.

  20. Damn Yankees? You know it I just listened to both their albums yesterday for the first time in a few years. So many gems! Agreed. Don't Tread's good songs are really good, and it's bad songs are significantly worse so there's really no middle for me there.

  24. Just think of the millions of people who love to play euchre and other card games that use [deleted] cards. People have to say that horrible word. If I still played, I would insist on using a different word, even making up a word, just so that horrible word would never be uttered.....

  25. J!! YOU NAILED IT!!! I FEEL THE SAME WAY!!! CAPS ON!!!! HAHAHAHAHA!! It lacked a spark. Nothing wrong with the synth era but I wanted more guitars on that record!!!! it was odd that the UK version had "Spiders" as a different track!!! Totally agree with both of you! The Ultimate Sin is just a wall-to-wall great, flashy ‘80s metal album. I still have the LP that I bought when it was new. Also, I don’t think I’ve listened to it since about 1992! So I need to fix that. I may go on a solo Ozzy run. HAHAHAHA!!! I LOVE IT!!! This is why I LOVE THIS FORUM SO MUCH!!!!! EVEN IF I ANNOY PEOPLE ON HERE! Someone has to!!! LOL! I LOVE GOING ON RUNS!! I'm on a serious U.K. run tonight! Signed, "Danger Money" OZZY RULES!! And I did, I started my Ozzy run this morning! Blizzard is done and I’m on Diary right now. Spoiler alert J. While they all have something to enjoy, it’s downhill from where you are now. I get what you’re saying...I think the precipitous downhill really occurred after No Rest, like from No More Tears forward. But I’ll enjoy reliving them as I go through. The Ultimate Sin I’m really looking forward to.

  29. Poor Newsted; I don't know why he put up with that shit (oh, wait -- $$$, yes I do). So Trujillo has now been in the band longer than Cliff and Jason were, but when people write the history of Metallica 100 years from now, will even one Trujillo-era song make the greatest hits? That's guy's had a thankless job.

  31. There isn't too much other than what you have said. He was diagnosed about three and a half years before he passed in early January, but it was a closely held secret among family and close friends. He had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, which is supposed to be especially aggressive and hard to treat. I know Alex said in an interview that he had had a nice visit with Neil a few months earlier and I'm thinking Alex said that Geddy had visited with Neil as well. There was someone on here (Earl maybe?) that had some relationship with Neil's family and heard in 2019 that Neil was dealing with some kind of illness but really, I think very few people knew until it happened. About the only thing to discuss was that one lower tier musician (don't remember his name, I hadn't heard of him before or since) claimed that he got to visit Neil a few weeks earlier and that he was in bed, unable to talk. Many of us, including me, think it was a false story made up for publicity. Knowing Neil's desire for privacy, I found it hard to believe his family would allow a visit under those circumstances. Hello Becky and Lorraine! Hope you are both doing well. You know I love you both very much. Been taking some time off the forum and focusing on my business and personal life. Yes, the irony of Rushhead right? I met a girl online back on April Fool's Day and almost 30 days later we have totally bonded and connected. She's amazing so I am trying to learn to be a grown up and focus more on Carly. Yes she was named by her dad after Carly Simon. I am sure that if I spent more time with me ex wife rather than being a blathering rock and roll wannabe expert on here since 2006 things would have been different. So since I care about both of you so much I just wanted to let you know that I am trying to be more mature. Not sure if that will ever happen, but I am trying to learn from my mistakes and to quote a Pearl Jam title, to be a "Betterman." So enough about me. Let's talk. Briefly. Lorraine, I know you have had a lot of stuff going on in your personal life. You know that I will always be here for you. You have many on here who support and love you. I know you know this. So Becky is correct. Anything I type tonight is old news. It's nothing new or exciting. But I don't blame you for not going back and scrolling through months of misery and sadness. I will say this though. Ever since Neil passed away and Kobe crashed in that helicopter humanity has turned to HELL. Ironically we just had Earth Day and the planet is doing just fine. Clear skies, dolphins swimming in the Venice Canals. Nature has reclaimed the Earth. Anyway, to get down to the topic at hand. Becky is right, although I am not related to the Peart Family in anyway. It was by random luck and though the business I do with my father in the distribution of footwear. A gentleman who lives in Thousand Oaks contacted us to do business with him. He was going to give us 100000 pairs of slippers to ship. So he flew up back in early November to Hayward Ca to meet us and to do a warehouse walkthrough. Well, as you both know me very well, my office is very much like my house. Lot's of Neil Peart and Rush stuff on my office walls! Well I showed this gentleman my office and he was totally blown away. I have the Neil Peart Paragon tapestry hanging on my wall. He loved it. So after I told him my Rush Passion and drumming addiction he told me something that I absolutely did not and could not believe. My father was also in the room. Of course my dad has seen RUSH 4 times with me. My mom once. Precious memories. Anyway this guy told me, I think it was on November 2nd 2019. I try to be accurate and as real as I can be on here. Oh the irony as the Rushhead Haters would type.... So he told my dad and I during the business meeting that he had/has the same nanny as Neil and Carrie had to watch over Olivia. I said..."NO WAY!" He said..."YES WAY!" He was a really nice guy!!! This was November 2nd so he told me that three weeks ago Geddy and Alex flew into LA to visit Neil at his Santa Monica home. He told me that Neil has been suffering from a brain tumor and that Geddy and Alex wanted to be with him and see how he was doing!! So as he told my father and I the news, I simply blocked it from my mind. I thought it was a rumor, but my God, his source was so amazing. The nanny!!!!! Well I looked at my dad that day and just shook my head in disbelief. I tried to erase it from my mind. I couldn't believe it!!!! But then really???? Two plus months later on January 10th 2020 it was TRUE!!!!!!!! It's kind of ironic that on here I have a big mouth. A bloated vocabulary and love to SHOUT WITH CAPS ON!!! NO FILTER RUSHHEAD!!!! A LOUD MOUTHED ASSHOLE!!! LOL!! But really? Something this serious even when I thought it was a rumor??? I wouldn't have leaked that story for one billion dollars back in November. Privacy and trust are more important than any dollar figure. DUHHHHHHHHHH!! LOL!!!!! I LOVE YOU NEIL PEART!!! FOREVER! I LOVE ALL OF MY FRIENDS ON HERE TOO!!! YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!! Thanks, Earl. It's important to women that they be treated as if they really matter. If they are #1 in your life, make sure you let them know. Why don't you and Wendy sit down and have a heart-to-heart? That you kept such a confidence about Neil to yourself, knowing full well how much Rush is loved on here, speaks volumes about your character. You are trustworthy. A rare thing these days. Lorraine! WOW! I am honored and flattered by your kind words. That being said, you truly know the real me. It's funny you bring up Wendy tonight. So thanks to Covid my gardner cannot enter my backyard. So I went out there for hours and hours and trimmed and cut and cleaned out everything myself. I then added a swing chair. A fire pit, benches, pillows and a lighting system above. Zoe, my oldest daughter is sooooo happy! She is having over her boyfriend and her best friend over. It's safe. I only let those two in my home. There is no sickness and we do protocol with social distancing in the front and backyard. All good. But Lorraine, as you know I am not on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter? No clue about that. I turned off my eHarmony account too. I am focused purely on Carly. She's dynamite. We talk, text and video chat daily. 30 days!! Our first phone call was on April Fool's Day. Love it. Hope she doesn't fool me on our first date! LOL! Anyway, Wendy sent me a text tonight. She told me that she saw a pic on Zoe's Facebook and loved the backyard. Lorraine, I know this is on a public forum but there is NO WAY I WOULD EVER GO BACK TO WENDY!!! I know you know I still love her, but that ship has sailed...... I will confess that over the last five years, the grass has never been greener since Wendy. But Lorraine, I'm falling for a girl named Carly. One day at a time I know! But as we reap we sow. I really like this girl. My Name is Earl.... LOL! LOVE YOU! Without TRUST you have nothing with any human!!!! You wonder why it is so rare these days??? I learned it all from my awesome parents!!!!! My mom and dad RULE!!!!!! I will always take care of them, as they have always taken care of me. RUSH ON! Earl, you are truly one of a kind. Thanks Lorraine! See? You really know me. I love you!

  38. Not really pissed, more like annoyed and disappointed. A decades-long family friend's condescension in that (1) I need children and (2) I need kids to know what "having one's plate full" really means. f**k you. Should've tossed him the f bomb but out of respect for the long term family relation I didn't. I said something much tamer, something like "Until you have mental telepathy, you don't know what goes on in other peoples' lives." Very disappointed in him. What does piss me off is the handful of people over the years who've told me that I need kids to be happy and that my life isn't complete without them. f**k you too. I also hate when people ask me why I don't like kids just because I don't have them. I thought those days were long gone but this recent interaction brought it all back. I'm just glad my parents, immediate family, and friends have never felt that way and have never pressured me like some twats.

  44. I own the R40 video but I haven't watched it that much as it makes me sad somehow. I don't remember Alex being ANGRY angry on it, but maybe I am not remembering correctly. The times when we watched on Periscope he seemed to be in a good mood most of the time but not joking around a ton. Maybe you are reading frustration as anger? I'm sure he was frustrated by the way his arthritis has affected his playing. Also, wasn't one of the nights filmed for the DVD a Toronto night where they had a less than stellar night? He was probably frustrated by that as well. Just my own opinion, though.
