  5. I'm not a massive fan of surf guitar but this guy was the best at it. He made it sound good. And he was a fellow lefty. RIP DD.

  12. Hey all, I'm super stoked to be able to officially say that I'm now the drummer for the Cherry Poppin' Daddies! I know they are a band NOTHING like Rush, but I was so excited I had to post somewhere lol. I was in a pretty serious prog band up until about 2011, and then I fell out of drumming. I actually just started playing a few months ago, just in time to prepare for the drum audition for the band, and miraculously, they picked me! The funny thing is that I think I owe it to Neil and Rush for keeping my chops up while not actually playing drums. Rush has basically been the only band I've listened since I quit playing :Neil: :Neil: :Neil: So yeah, super happy to be playing drums again, and even happier to have a spot with a decently known band!

  18. Those were f***ing amazing gigs! :haz: Rumour has it I’m still resting up Sexy!! As always, Pat! Aye and triple aye! :pokercards: Triple aye instead of triple X? You must be on your best behaviour! This will change things: Oh boy, such a blast from the past! I don’t think I want to know where the heck you get this stuff! My private collection?? Try this out Beanie: That’s probably one of the more disturbing possible responses :P Thank you for the lullaby...I’m still listening but as you probably guessed, key components are missing for me!

  19. I forgot that Bean is a rasta. :( I hope nothing happened to those dreadlocks! http://www.sondealrecords.com/produts/23379_large.jpg Hope all's well with you, Bean! Take good care of yourself and come back soon! I didn't know about that. Yeah, she was asking me how I picked my stupid user-name, so I asked about hers and she said originally she wanted to be: "Bean - TRF's Official Rasta" but thought it was too long and acronym-ed it. I told her my name came from a session with a Ouija board. I know the occult can scare stoned Rastafarians so I hope I didn't cause her absence. :( I was just kidding Bean! I don't own a Ouija board anymore! I traded it for a copy of "Dianetics" just like you suggested! Come back! http://rs1368.pbsrc.com/albums/ag175/sunnydaleclassof99/mrfurleyconfused_zps57325bd3.gif?w=280&h=210&fit=crop Is she black?? I dlon't thlink slo. Clome black, Bleanie! Trleedluck mlisses ylou tlerribly! Oh vt, always able to crack me up with your creativity You know, I really wanted dreadlocks when I was a preteen; naturally my mother said no. I thought she would lose her shit when a Jamaican schoolmate with glorious dreads took a liking to me in high school, but she was surprisingly chill about it. She didn’t even know that he didn’t want me to get dreads, either!

  21. :smoke: Magnificent! Thank you so much, vt! Lately, I’ve been working my way through Leonard Cohen’s last collection, The Flame. It has some glorious pieces...and it’s perfect for my current state because I can easily pause to contemplate whenever the room starts to spin What’s been the most intriguing work that you’ve read recently? Leonard Cohen -- nice! I haven't read him in years. I really liked his first novel ("The Favourite Game"?). "Beautiful Losers" was a lot, um, looser? Sorry to hear that your current state is one of spinning. Maybe you should look into Sufism! (Sufi joke!) Although I don't think he was a sufi, I recently enjoyed a re-read of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. There's a lot of bleakness in there! I never realized the depth of it before! Also picking through my old Rabelais, looking for the saucy stuff! (The Walls of Paris section, for example, with its refrain of "wipe it well") :o Spin on, my friend: Yes, “looser” is quite the apt description! I ought to revisit that one someday. I still haven’t unpacked all of my books—there are so bloody many! I have never read the Rubaiyat, but I’m adding it to my list! Depths of bleakness sound right up my alley As for “wip[ing] it well,” perhaps I dare not even comment! Sufism is intriguing, indeed. Thanks also for the beautiful music! It had the cat spinning, too—which says a lot, as something must be truly special in order to pry her away from her beloved fireplace!

  24. Indeed. I have to think the results would of been exceptional. It's one of my biggest "What if?" questions ever. My main problem with GUP is the production. I can't imagine Lillywhite would not have gave it a heaviness it deserves.

  26. I don’t know where he is on the spectrum of scotch drinkers or drug users currently. A reliable source told me essentially that he and his first wife were avid bong-hitters and otherwise not very much of anything else as of the early 90s (but that’s 25 years ago). This was from another musician who was personally friendly with them/was a guest at their home a few times. But everyone knows he likes the Macallan, because he writes about it. We just don’t know if it’s a lot of it or just one or two cocktails a day, which is not nothing, but far from drinking up a storm. I never heard tell of a coke habit, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Anyway, last time I saw a snapshot of him on social media, he looked as healthy or healthier than you’d expect for a guy closing in on age 70–staying active, not blowing up in weight or wasting away. Just being a guy with other guys he knows. If he’s abusing himself like a fiend, he’s not showing it very quickly—coke and that really hard-partying will age people prematurely and saddle people with all kinds of gout, heart failure, strokes, bleeding, ulcers, caved in nasal septums, liver disease, pancreatic failures, etc.

  27. Saw Rush 1980-2015ish whenever the R40 tour was. Fell in love with them w 2112/Kings/Hemispheres. But I've played GuP more than any. It's their darkest except debatedly for Vapor Trails BOTH w damn good reasons for Peart's lyrics to be darkened (loss/death of loved ones), My best friend who went w most of those shows died a few years ago, suddenly. Afterimage is lyrical perfection. Musically Distant Early Warning, Red Lenses, Red Sector A, Between The Wheels and even the lyrically simple sci fi The Body Electric are all powerful (not enough bass, really? Try it on my stereo). And I was born in '63 the cold war SCARED ME badly in my teens and even before. Rush got the fear and created Between The Wheels "you know how that rabbit feels, going under your speeding wheels..you can fall from rocket's red glare down ro brother can you spare another war, another wasteland, another lost generation?" (what the disillusioned youth post WWI were called). As a member of the cold-war lost generation, this is my fav Rush album of them all.

  33. A lot of good groups listed above! Thin Lizzy for sure. And my parents played a lot of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, an Irish folk group that was around forever. I used to think they were terribly corny, but they have a certain charm. I like the Dropkick Murphys as well! http://youtube.com/watch?v=A1NZcH2haIM
