Thanks guys! I'm on vacation in the middle of the woods somewhere in the mountains of VA with spotty cell service that only works on one side of the cabin, but it worked enough for me to see this thread. This place is the best. I live you guys. :cheers:5 points

Forcing Ged to use nothing but the Jazz and the Rick for the older stuff!? I say let the man play whatever he wants (except the f***ing Wal...I'm glad he didn't bring that out). R40 was a total gear porn tour for all three of them with that giant array of Les Pauls and a few nuggets like that 12 string PRS for How It Is, that circus of cool looking and sounding basses, and 2 freaking drum kits! :drool:3 points

2 new songs and they wanted to play live rather than be stuck in the studio. Moving Pictures 30th anniversary means $$$ Those are probably the big two reasons. I'm not complaining. I saw them three times on the Time Machine Tour and it was a freakin' blast.3 points

Combine the 2nd set of R40 with the 2nd set of the Time Machine tour would have been an ultimate Time Machine experience3 points

:goodone: Great thread Lorraine. It was probably a combination of all of the above responses. A good way to test drive the new songs, celebrate "Moving Pictures", make some money while preparing for the new album. It was a good tour, in my opinion...what great fun it was to see/hear "Moving Pictures" played from start to finish.3 points

The first band that came to mind is The Gaslight Anthem. I bought "The '59 Sound" on a whim just by the cover and title without ever hearing them or of them. Little did I know that I was about to find out that rock and roll, in fact, is not dead. Their music is everything that is good about good old fashioned rock and roll.3 points

A lot of great selections and not to duplicate albums already mentioned, I'd like to insert the following. Traffic - Low Spark of High Heeled Boys The Who - Live at Leeds Crosby Stills & Nash - Crosby Stills & Nash Blind Faith - Blind Faith3 points

For me Pink Floyd started with Ummagumma. In high school we had 'talent' day the last Friday of every month. I remember some dancer came out on the stage dancing to 'A Narrow Way,' light show and all. I was sitting in the audience and said, I need to find out who's playing that song. Been a fan ever since and haven't missed a tour, by the band or members of the band, that passed through NYC/NJ since 1973. Freshman year 1970. http://youtu.be/UKHnkOArJ4Y3 points

I am quite skeptical about this remake. It had better be really, really GOOD.......but my cynicism tells me that it will focus more on the action than on the story. The 1959 film was flawless, IMO. It's gonna be hard to match! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N983kHgvjQQ2 points

You hear the term "Classic Rock" tossed about all the time. But what does it really mean? The question here is, in your opinion, what would you say are 20 albums that best define what "Classic Rock" is. It is harder than you think to narrow it down to 20, unbiased selections. Here are my 20...which, admittedly, would, most likely change from day to day... 1: The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 2: Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited 3: The Who - Who's Next 4: Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon 5: The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds 6: Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced? 7: The Doors - The Doors 8: David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars 9: The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers 10: Led Zeppelin - IV 11: The Kinks - The Kinks are the Village Green Society 12: Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic 13: Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak 14: Queen - A Night at the Opera 15: Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run 16: Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 17: Alice Cooper - Love it to Death 18: Fleetwood Mac - Rumours 19: Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd 20: Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps2 points

MGM needs to realize remaking their own films won't bring them back to financial health. Just look at the pointless remakes of Carrie and Poltergeist.2 points

And here's the latest: On JUDAS PRIEST's plans to write and record the follow-up to 2014's "Redeemer Of Souls" album: Rob: "Well, we wanna keep the momentum going. For certain bands, it's the way that the whole business of being in a band and making music works. I mean, we were out [on tour] for almost two years, I think, playing so many shows in so many countries and traveling so many thousands of miles. And, you see, generally when you do that, then you take some time off to decompress and think about all the wonderful things you have experienced. And then generally you take a little bit of time and then you ramp up to go back out on the road again. But I've gotta tell you, this is the best time for PRIEST right now. We're just having a blast, and we want to keep the metal party going, and what better way to do that than to bring on some new metal songs."2 points

Bands make more money touring nowadays since album sales are no longer a prime revenue stream. Demand. Rush does pretty well selling concert tickets. Rush, at the time, still enjoyed playing live.2 points

Whatever the reason was, I´m glad they did that tour, since I was able to catch them live on two dates - Rio and São Paulo. My wife went to the Rio show with me, and almost got deaf with the Far Cry and Marathon explosions!2 points

COS wasn't as produced or recorded as well as FBN was.For one thing Geddy's vocals in FBN were doubletracked in a lot of songs which lent them a nice thickness. Not so much in COS which sounds plain in comparison or sort of half-baked.2 points
-
Actually Neil was tricked into believing it was a real cannon at first....Imagine his horror when he realized he was suckered into doing it for the rest of the tour....:D2 points
-
This is a good analysis. CoS features a very strong Side 1. Side 2 is Rush really trying to emulate Floyd or Genesis, without yet having the songwriting chops to back up the idea. Listened to in the context of a bridge between FBN and pretty much everything that would come later (or at least through Moving Pictures), its an absolutely indispensible record. Taken on it's own merits though, it doesn't much rise above the level of the stoner rock that other bands (Scorpions, BOC, Uriah Heep) were putting out at the same time. Pretty easy to see how Rush got lumped in with the likes of Kiss and Ted Nugent in 1975.....2 points

The Miracle Worker (1962) Anne Bancroft as teacher Anne Sullivan, and a 15-year old Patty Duke as the young Helen Keller. Both actresses won Academy Awards for their respective roles.. The film is lauded as one of the best works of the 20th century. Patty Duke's performance was absolutely brilliant. http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/60/79/4b/60794be4824153dbf4cd34d5acc1f13b.jpg2 points

Alot of common albums listed so far. I guess thats to be expected and in a way kind of brings home the purpose of trying to define the classic rock sound. Either way its been fun reading the lists and a good thread2 points

Absolutely! I tried to stick to all studio albums, but the Allmans at Fillmore East, I couldn't resist. Good calls on the others as well...I love that Traffic album (my favourite of theirs is John Barleycorn Must Die, even though it doesn't represent a defining classic rock moment quite as well). I agree but the are notes, jams, screams, solos, etc on live albums that you can't find on the studio versions of the songs. http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w276/custom55/IMG_0391.jpg2 points

Geddy must certainly be satisfied with his haircut if he's kept it the same for the past 23 years...2 points

I think this forum in particular overrates COS. Even back in rhe Alt.music.rush days I dont think it was rated very highly. I don't think time has been kind to that album at all. Bastille Day is amazing, Necromancer has some amazing guitar playing and Fountain is a couple of good ideas with really nothing to unify them thematically. 2112 is stronger in every way.2 points

I don't think anyone believes they regret making CoS. They've said repeatedly that they believed in it totally when they released it. The vast majority on TRF believe that also, but you always see that haters chime in and claim (in their minds only) that the band thinks the album was a mistake. Being the worlds biggest COS fan, I personally get offended (I know I need to get tougher skin) from all of the COS attacks and some of those make the bogus claims that the boys regret the album (without one credible point of evidence to the contrary other than that they were disappointed in the commercial success). CoS is such a critical album in their development. It features two of their best early short songs, Bastille and LP, and two excellent long songs. I recall opening nite in Tulsa, TRF was bursting at its seams, when they played LP. I never fully understood Rush fans, those that think of Rush as their favorite band, that do not like Caress. .2 points
-
Why do you say that? Because it's the only riff on the album that has a metal feel to it. Metal has a certain sound and playing style and that's not really anywhere to be found on BIB or For Those About To Rock. Just because a band plays loud doesn't make them metal. You wouldn't call The Who metal just because they were once the loudest live band of all time. ACDC just plays rock that's a little louder than most but it doesn't mean they're metal. I never understood the AC/DC is metal opinion. Blues based hard rock. No more, no less.2 points

You're the only one... Take note that Lorraine cleverly waited until immediately before her nightly departure to start this thread. She'll return in the morning to survey the damage. It seems that way, but I honestly didn't see it until moments before I started the thread. The "X" on each day counting down to this date tells another story... Calendars cannot argue. They haven't a mouth.2 points

After the Easter luch with the family, we went out for coffee and had some fun with Stella. This place used to be a fort way back in the 17th century, and is now a museum with a cafe and a great view of the Copacabana beach: http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k210/RodrigoAltaf/d0d8310e-60d7-49ad-8838-6ce988ea1984_zpshbfpue0g.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k210/RodrigoAltaf/dfacc9db-ddc3-4fce-8e73-da17fdec47da_zps9mpqnkb9.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k210/RodrigoAltaf/df4f2c1f-a8fb-494e-b2e1-7780b075f90e_zpsaxlbrdpe.jpg2 points

cute doggies! I love your jacket, by the way. Thanks! The "drinking vest" has seen better days, but I can't give it up. More dog pics: I took them for a walk around Buggs Island. Harley doesn't care for the water, but Ghost swam in after me and sat on my shoulder. I felt like a weird pirate. :madra:2 points
