  1. It's that time... I'm gonna write notes in a kind brick wall of text since it's VT ;) General extraneous distortion = eliminated vocals = clear, but not too loud like I expected. I can hear some parts of lines I never heard before subtle/cleaner guitar parts = unveiled, and powerfully rendered rhythm guitar = calmed down but not muted except in certain places, it's still a ballsy, angrily powerful riff machine extra guitar solos = good, I've no problem with this aspect bass = sharper, crisper, more available to your ear drums = they sound like drums now and not tupperware, I can hear fills that I didn't notice on the 2002 edition Geddy gang vocals = they've finally been translated harmonically speaking One Little Victory = this one sounds nice and clear but not that different to the original overall, I was kind of like eh?? for a sec Power guitar riff in the middle of Ceiling Unlimited = almost gone, that's a downer, it's more balanced overall though, nice guitar solo Ghost Rider = sounds f***ing excellent, this was always one of the meh tracks on the album for me, it's definitely good now Peaceable Kingdom = Not sure about this track but then I never was, it's got an unusual main riff, the power riff in the middle of this one though is intact, hurrah! The Geddy gang vocals make more harmonic sense here I think. The Stars Look Down = seems heavier, so much for fear of the lack of VT balls. I like this song better too, the cleaner guitars really benefit from this remix, these songs from Ghost Rider through to How it is were my least faves on here but I like them way better now How It Is = this seems heavier too! Cleaned up doesn't automatically mean no balls-muted! The main riff here is definitely more powerful. The bass part really works better to my ears now as well. Vapor Trail = seems like there's more time on this track. Less brick wall = the illusion of more time. Again the bass is revealed telling it's story, that got lost in aural translation last time. The vocals in the verse again make more sense, they're more evident, guitar solo = good, and there seems a lot of "new" guitar parts on this one Secret Touch = here's one where the bass already worked brilliantly, it sounds just like it did. The guitars don't overpower the vocals now, but still have that rasping roar especially when the vocals aren't present but are not lost when they are. There's some cool clean ringy guitar on here that I never heard before, is there weird effect here too around 2.20? Almost like a synth or guitar synth? Earthshine = the oooooohs in the chorus aren't as prominent, hmmmm I like the ooooooos. This song sounded good on the original edition, here it's just clearer, though ironically the "old" ringy clean guitars don't quite reach me the same, but the new "new" clean ringy guitars do, is that a new guitar solo too? Sounds good. The riff right after the guitar solo sounds good and chunky and gravelly. Sweet Miracle = This sounds ballsier in the riff department at the beginning and after each verse, but those guitars don't fight the vocals like before. The "middle eight" with Geddy scatting like an opera singer gone to the jazz side is much clearer and melodic. Nocturne = it's gonna sound boring but this tune is clearer and sharper especially in the vocals and bass, this one always seemed to have the most extraneous noise on it, but I always liked it anyway. The guitars are still dirty but the land rover isn't going right through the puddles and splashing distortion all over the windows this time. We can "see" where we're going. Freeze = Listening to this reminds me again that removal of noise can actually make a song more powerful not less, that's the case here. Drums and bass work much better here than the original. Again the Geddy gang vocals make more sense. in fact the all the vocals make more sense on this now. The other edition could be called VT Lost in Translation Out of the Cradle = on this we get the cleaner guitars and the new wavey guitars working in a much clearer way with the bass, I hear cool guitar amp feedback around 1.40, that I never heard before, fits in nicely. Was it there before? The new wavey guitars at the 3 minute mark are funky chicken neck dance worthy! Overall verdict = I always liked this album, now I like it better. It's not a no-balls muted too-loud vocals disappointment like I feared it could be. To be succinct for a second, it's f***ing good! It still has it's power, it still has it's balls, the guitars are still fierce, they don't get drowned or lost, they're in your face, they're just not strangling you. Dream Theater = I'm not doing one of these for that album  I'm listening to it now though! :yay: :guitar: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: edit: I missed out the word "meh" on the Ghost Rider bit.

  5. I have never followed the crowd, always done my own thing & will never ever follow fashion (sorry Mum), I'm 44 now so I don't think I'm going to change, I'm quite looking forward to being a mad old lady. My 13 year old son says that he's glad that I'm `not normal` haha & his friends think I'm cool! (How about that, I've never been called cool, a weirdo yes). He's also doing his own thing . . . I'm so proud.

  7. Anything like this ever happen to you? I wore my Rush shirt to football practice the other day. The kids asked me about my shirt, and as I was getting ready to reply, another coach sets in with "You never heard of Rush? The greatest rock drummer ever, 2112 being the most epic album of all time", etc, etc. I actually was a little irritated. Rush is MY band dammit!

  10. I disagree with you vehemently. I think that the primary reason Rush exists is to make music, and the secondary reason is to make money. And the sole reason that we are Rush fans is because we like to listen to their music, and find it worth giving our money in exchange for. I mean..."The sole reason we are here is because we like to give them our money"? That's actually a completely crazy statement, and I can't believe you believe it. I assure you that if what I got off on was giving people my money, I wouldn't need to give it to a bunch of rich Canadian hosers! I'd already be in ecstasy every month when I paid my bills, and surely, ponying up the closing costs I'm going to have to pay next week to close on the refinancing of my house would send me into paroxysms of delight. Which I'm pretty sure it won't! I'm sure I will never convince you of my viewpoint, but you will never convince me of yours either think of it as a symbiotic relationship. mutually beneficial. but its called the music business for a reason. really its what happens between all bands and their fans. its kind of hard to be a fan and not spend money to a certain extent right? Of course, but what you've said here is a really long way from saying that the sole reason Rush exists is to make money, and the sole reason we are here is because we like giving them our money. My point was not to claim that Rush doesn't make money, nor to claim that fans don't spend money on Rush, but rather to say that I don't think that making or spending money is the sole or even the primary motivation on either side. Words, they actually mean things yeah they do and often the fewer the better. simplistic as my statement was i still think its true. roll the bones............. :smoke: In that case, I'm not sure that you understand the meaning of the phrase "sole reason."

  12. Nope. Not a cash in. Rush is the opposite of KISS. If anyone thinks this is a cash in, then they're seriously cynical.. and not just about Rush I'd bet. Cynical of life. Not only that, I doubt it was very "easy" at all! another guy to elaborate on how rush and kiss are opposites. fantastic! can't wait to read both of your thoughts............. KISS is easily the most blatant rock n roll example of selling your soul for cash and gold. Just follow their merch trail. That's all I needed.. one thought on that. My suspicion on the timing of the Remix is The Studio Albums 1989-2007 box set. If you read any Geddy interviews, you'd know he felt responsible for the sonic mess and has wanted it fixed for the last 11 years. They made the obvious decision that it needed more than a remaster to fix it if it was going to be a part of the box set and new remasters. The time was now again to fix it once and for all. Otherwise, it may have sat unfixed for another 11 years, or however long until a remaster overhaul occurred. The time was now. They didn't want the old crusty VT being together with all the shiny new remixes. From an artistic standpoint, it makes sense that now was the time. From a cynical standpoint, any attempt at a fix at any point in the future, unless it was given away free, would be considered cashing in. And in this age of internet thievery, why would they give the Remix away? Rush's integrity remains intact as far as I'm concerned, regardless of what any cynic says.

  14. I'd rank mine like this: 1. The Enemy Inside (Absolutely killer track) 2. Surrender to Reason (RUSH sound with the best chorus of the album) 3. Through the Looking Glass (I&W era stuff!) 4. Enigma Machine (My God.. Obviously written about Mangini's skills) 5. Illumination Theory (A bit uneven, but the good stuff is REALLY good) 6. Along for the Ride (Great track for a ballad) 7. Behind the Veil (Jordan's keys and the JP solo make this song) 8. The Bigger Picture (I actually prefer the 1st half of this song to the big ending) 9. False Awakening Suite (Shades of 6DOIT all over the place) Now that I've listened to this album a good 12 times at least, I'd change my vote from a 7 to a 9. Yes, it's really that good. In fact, my main problem with it now is that it's too damn short! The good: Just unreal songs. If given the chance to hear The Enemy Inside over half of SC, BL&SL, or Octavarium I'd take it in a heartbeat. The bass guitar is way up in the mix for the first time in what seems like forever or maybe the FII days. And it also seems like JM's not doubling up JP's lines as much as before which makes it more interesting to me. And he's rocking the Geddy Lee late 70's-early 80's sound too!! The lyrics are EXCELLENT once again! No more wine gettin' better with age! Sorry JP, you can write some great lyrics but those were crap :D Upon my 'settling in' time listening to this puppy, I'll retract my previous statement about all the guitar / synth wankery because it's not really fair. And it's not really accurate when you compare anything on this album to some of the extended million-note moments of SC or even the much-ballyhooed but just way, way too busy beginning of Lost not Forgotten. Petrucci & Jordan's solos and unison leads are sporadically and expertly placed. James hits some of the highest notes he's done in many years. Now as much as I love JLB I really hope this translates well live where he's pretty hit or miss. I still give him credit for never failing in the studio recordings as he's always great. Mike Mangini. Holy shit, just holy shit. You know it's weird but- if this makes sense- he plays so well you almost don't really notice him that much. Maybe what I mean is that his playing is both imaginative yet non-intrusive. Unlike some of MP's drum lines where he'd just throw in this ultra-mega fill that drowned out everybody else and sort of sounded like crap, MM's fills are tasteful and always seem to be perfectly placed. Don't get me wrong for 1 second about MP's skills though- he's absolutely amazing on drums and is a huge reason why DT is where it is today. It's just some of his choices don't sit well with me occasionally, especially on the latter albums he played on. I don't think there could have been any better of a replacement for the man than Mangini and I really can't wait to see what he does for the next DT album.

  16. And he even cracks a joke amidst it all. I do wish he had won the case instead of a settlement, but on the other hand he perhaps would have faced time behind bars? I can't fathom that a guy like Alex should ever behave in a way that would make necessary to break his nose and tase him five times - it doesn't add up It was a minor charge, and he did not have to make any admission of guilt. It's highly likely that he took the plea because that was physically, mentally and emotionally easier to deal with than going through the stress of a trial. Especially when you consider what Rush went through with Neil not too many years before that, I'm sure that he just wanted to be done with it and not have it f**k up his life any worse. And who the hell wants to see a courtroom full of "free Alex" dweebs?

Even if I'm ever trashed and DO go there, I would never actually see a difference lol. A waste, really. I am suddenly VERY aware that I am talking about waxing pubic hair, anal bleaching & getting drunk and testing the waters. hooooo, that was a weird feeling. This should go down in thread history! Let's see, in three pages, we've covered: bikini wax, Brazilian wax, Hollywood wax, anal bleaching and rim jobs. Incredible. I'm so glad that someone picked up on the rim job aspect. I was beginning to wonder. I noticed it right away, actually, but to say something like "Keeping it classy as always, Sheldon!" would have been boring and slightly hypocritical ;)

  45. No f***ing way. I am so tired of the Komen et al juggernaut bombarding us with that "insipid pink" (as a late much beloved friend who died from breast cancer called it). Read up on Komen - Nancy Brinker and the top level execs of Komen have made a pretty nice living off Brinker's dead sister. They've managed to corner the market on cancer donations. It goes on all year long and gets worse in October. We're aware. Boy are we ever - we'd have to be blind and deaf to NOT be aware. I will give to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, who provided my brother in law with some much needed cash for his meds. He has multiple myeloma, Where is his special color and ribbon and yogurt lid? At least breast cancer can be cured - BIL has done relatively well with his disease for seven years, but it will kill him - he has already surpassed the mean survival time. There is no cure. Same with pancreatic cancer and I know WAY too many people with that. I do not mean to sound unsympathetic - I am not by any means. I prefer to be more hands-on with people I know personally that have been touched by bc (or any other). At least when I take them food, ferry them to and from treatments and sit with them at home to give the primary caregivers a break I KNOW where the effort is going. And I wouldn't trade those precious moments with my much-missed friend for anything in the world. Breast cancer isn't even the #1 cancer killer of women - lung cancer is. Oh but wait - they must've been smokers so they don't deserve help.
