  2. I would never complain about the set list. Well, I mean if I was going to complain I'd say there were way too many 80's songs and not enough 70's classics, but since I'm not complaining I would never say that. ;)

  3. The drugs thing might actually guarantee the album is better than it would have been, that and the Shraron split, any time away from her instantly makes you more talented again!

  5. Donna Halper just shared this on FB :) Just had a wonderful lunch with friends and members of Geddy's family, including his sister and brother. Here's a photo of Geddy's mom, an amazing lady who is in her 80s and never thought she would see her son inducted...and now, she will. She was beaming with pride just talking about it. What a joy to know such a nice family!

  6. WHAT RUSH MEANS TO ME Tonight, after decades of being snubbed and more than a decade of eligibility, Rush will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A fan since the 8th grade, it shouldn't mean that much me. In truth, it does. There's an air of vindication that is hard to understand and even more difficult to explain. In the high school halls of in the shopping malls, I wasn't just a nerd, a band geek, a partier, or a jock. In fact, at one point or another, I was all of them, sometimes in the same day; going from baseball practice to band practice (long live Eclipse) to a bonfire in a pine grove. While at times I felt in sync with my peers, I, like many others, often felt just outside looking in. While others triumphed the sounds of Van Halen, Dio, and Iron Maiden, I quietly grew more interested in the moods and emotions of some Canadian trio very few had a flavor for. For me, others listened to these bands in an attempt to fit in while I listened to Rush to feel unique and different while slowly learning that was an okay to just be 'me'. As natural for it was in my grand design to want to feel accepted, I wasn't going to give in to security under pressure and just do or be what others wanted. To my young and innocent eyes, Rush opened the world to me. There were places out there that were different (the whole wide world, an endless universe. Yet we keep looking through the eyeglass in reverse). There were people in those places who lived under completely different circumstances (people storm the barricades, walls go tumbling in). I wanted to learn about them, understand them, and increase my awareness of humanity. It was through that journey and exploration that I thought I might become a better a person (the point of the journey is not arrive. Anything can happen). Did I need Rush to become a better person? Probably not. However, there is no doubt in my middle-aged mind that I have become a more compassionate, aware, and sensitive person because of Rush. To the little girl that hides shaking with her hands on her ears to the person who looks down from the evening plane and wonders what you're doing tonight, I, too, believe the level of sensitivity to those in danger or peril or struggle is more acute inside me because of Rush's influence on me. I don't watch the news to learn, I watch it to feel. What has Rush meant to me during the course of 40 something years? Not much, but more than I know. They didn't influence my poor judgements or wise decisions. They didn't affect my successes or failures, my triumphs or shortcomings. However, they did offer me the opportunity to think and feel outside the box. They challenged me to define for myself what were acceptable levels of humanity (I knew he was different in his sexuality). They taught me lessons on emotional survival (All of us do time in the gutter. Dreamers turn to look at the cars - turn around, turn around) that I have used during various down moments including the loss of my brother last June. I'm sure I could have survived this world without them, but I'm glad I had them along for the journey. As we the fans celebrate this induction, we know it means little in the grand scheme of things. Yet, it means something to our spirit, our soul if you will. We can't quite define it - but really - hasn't that always been the case? "You can be the captain and I will draw the chart. Sailing into destiny, closer to the heart"

  11. Long time lurker, first time poster…thanks in advance for your patience and indulgence. I thought I would share my story with you guys….as you’re probably the only bunch of folks who can really appreciate what I experienced… and the final result. First, a little background…I’ve been a devoted fan since I was in grade school, around 1980 (was introduced to Rush by my high-school age baby sitter), and have seen them on several tours throughout the years since then…maybe 15+ shows. I became a drummer / percussionist when I was young, and Neil has been my primary inspiration. I currently live in Atlanta, and for this tour a friend of mine decided he was going to try for the Live Nation VIP “see what you get” tickets. I’m kind of a classically-trained pessimist, so I was reserving judgment. The night of the show, I waited for him to arrive so we could pick up “the envelope,” and when we opened it, I couldn’t believe what I saw. Row BBB…holy $#@! But where? I felt like a little kid as we found the actual seats….and we’re in the second row in front of Geddy. I can’t believe I’m actually going to experience the show from this close. For all the previous shows I'd been to before, I had always been “way back.” While it was kinda chilly (Verizon Wireless Amphitheater outdoor venue…early Fall cold snap), it was, without a doubt, the best [concert] experience I’ve ever had. It was a fabulous show, they sounded great, and I honestly feel like being so close made it incredibly intimate… feeling like they were doing their thing just for me. While I consciously know they had no idea who I was, I know I made eye contact with Geddy and Alex a few times (and they saw me with huge smiles), which was unbelievable. During the first set, Neil broke / lost a stick and Alex picked it up and tossed it toward where I was, but it fell out of reach. Alex also threw a few picks, and again, while close, they unfortunately fell farther than I could reach. The show flew by much too quickly. Standing for the whole show along with everybody else, I tried to “rock-out” as hard as I could to every song. However, Neil must have spotted a lady in the first row a few seats from me and, right after the show ended, I was right there when I saw her being presented with the evening’s “used lumber.” SO CLOSE…. After coming down from my euphoria, and a few minutes of watching the stage tear-down procedures get underway, I started to head for the exit. I crossed from Geddy’s side toward Alex’s side and saw that Alex’s guitar tech (at least I think it was Scott Appleton), was busy doing his thing. A guy walking next to me got his attention and asked if he had any “spare” picks. To my amazement, Scott actually handed a few to a small group of us. YEE HAW! Right place, right time…CRAZY!!! I was still flying high for a few days after the show, and I went out to rushshowphotos.com to see what had been snapped. What do you know...I find myself in a photo! http://www.rushshowp...96437&k=9p9Z8SP I’m just above and to the right of Geddy’s confidence monitor…my head is peeking out from behind a guy in the first row looking directly at the camera…my arms are in the air with the grey sweatshirt. I knew something had to be done to commemorate that evening. So I got to thinking about this forum and the thread(s) on getting stuff autographed. I ordered a few of the photos, and received them a couple weeks later. Then, based on some of this group’s recommendations, I sent them to the AT&T Center in San Antonio. I followed the suggested directions about addressing, packaging, envelopes, etc…and I even included three SILVER sharpies, as I was hoping they would use them to make the signatures “pop” on the photo paper. And I wrapped them in a handwritten note thanking them for a fantastic show. Again, as a “glass half empty” kind of guy, I kept my expectations in check, but a few days after the San Antonio show, my self-addressed envelope showed up in my mailbox…with individually signed photos! While unbelievably awesome, they used BLACK sharpies (most likely each of them used one pen for all the stuff they were signing that night)…but I’m NOT complaining at all. It looks like both Geddy and Neil “personalized,” but Alex did not. http://tinypic.com/r/29mwsjk/6 http://tinypic.com/r/sql1k9/6 http://tinypic.com/r/2i1laps/6 And apologies for the bits of “reflection” in these camera phone pics…it’s the glass covering the shadowbox. Many weeks later (like this past February), I finally received the Live Nation swag, and I thought about working with a professional framing person to make a truly awesome piece. Here is the result. I hope you guys think it’s as cool as I do. http://tinypic.com/r/2uzf58o/6 http://tinypic.com/r/scfax5/6 Thanks for reading, and thanks to all of you “regulars” who provided advice and direction on how to make the autograph portion of my little project happen. Most of all, thanks to the best damn band in the land!

  13. Yep, sort of how I feel, really. Learning of his creative process makes me think that my letter was a possible footnote in his idea book...and something clicked. But when they DO play the song, (like this past tour) I get a silly grin on my face!

  14. Wow now that's an awesome cover. :) This makes the song so much better. WHo is this person? I think she is from South America- there is a link to her YouTUbe page. almost afraid to admit it but.. he cover is actually.... dare I say it... BETTER than the album version..... It works...interesting how an old song like that can get new life breathed into it within a differnt genre! I think it would be cool to see this get some buzz, then have people freak when they find out it's an obscure Rush tune!

  16. THis post card was actually sent to me after the album was released. But there's more to the story... I have another post card that I keep in the same frame with a pen and ink print of Neil at his drums (Rosewood Tama's, Circa PW/MP) that has some water damage at the top from when it was stored in a damp place years back. The cards are masking the water damage, and I have the card I posted facing with writing/signature out and the other card facing picture out so you can see what the front AND backs look like. (and it's tough to take out and put back, or I'd just take a picture of it) In a prior letter I sent to him, (the post card I received back is dated 1983) I mentioned that I was having trouble finding a band, and wanted to know the secret of getting good, and finding the right band etc. (along with some other questions) He seemed to focus upon my frustration with not being able to find the right band etc. and gave me some encouraging words. When Power Windows came out, my friend and I saw the name of the tune and went "huh?" after we listened to the tune, my friend said something to the effect of "DUDE THIS SONG IS ABOUT YOU!" and mentioned the post card I received and all that... I, of course, wrote it off and said that maybe some of what I said stuck with him when he was writing, or at least the name of our town stuck with him, whatever (and there are crap loads of Middletown's so...but after reading how he puts things into a little book of lyrics, I think it's possible?!?! But I'm not laying claim as to being the inspiration for the song.

  17. http://postmediacanadadotcom.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/rush-stamp.jpg?w=680 As if finally being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tonight wasn't enough, Rush are now also getting their own postage stamp! The legendary progressive rockers are one of four bands - the others are Beau Dommage, the Guess Who and the Tragically Hip - being included in the latest set of Canadian Recording Artist stamps from Canada Post. The stamp will be available beginning July 19 at Canada Post retail outlets or online.

  20. The postcards are so cool! Neil writes about them in one of his books, but i have never seen one IRL. Did not realize they were so personalized, he put some real effort into them. Prior to those ones posted, Neil used to actually write out the entire card...if I had a scanner I'd post pictures of mine... and Chris: WE ARE! ;-) You could take a picture with your cell phone or something- that would be really cool to see, even if hte image is not super great. Looks like you came close to not getting the one card- it has a change of address label on it- Ok, good idea! ....here ya go: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/jaminbenb/Postcard_zpse739a289.jpg Wow- that is sooo cool!! Wish there were 2 "like" buttons! Got those "boogidies boogidies" down yet? lol! And he even mentions a specific song- Middletown Dreams- Do you remember what you said in your letter to him? Just a bunch of questions, it was 1985 and there wasn't much detail about things, so I wasn't sure what kinds of China's he was using, and seeing the pictures, wasn't overly sure of whether he was using the wrong end of the stick, etc...Didn't know how to ask about the "4 limb" stuff, and my friends and I called them boogidie boogidies! (and yes I took his advice and got them down) The reason he mentioned Middletown Dreams was I lived in Middletown, PA at the time, so I'm guessing he picked up on that.

  21. I know, but it's a private club they got. Unless you buy an overpriced ticket, fans are shut out. It's one of the reasons RRHOF, to me, sucks. The antithesis of, say, the Pro Football HOF.

  27. ytserush...I know for certain that they aren't..."legit". Apparently the Russian market for vinyl died a very quick and painful death in the early 90s and the only ways to get anything legit was to import (marginally risky) or travel outside the country to pick things up. But I look at these little pieces of plastic as a snapshot in time...an attempt by someone somewhere to make some ill-gotten money through a sub-standard highly-illicit scheme. Call me crazy, but I thought they would be pretty cool to have in the collection. Without having my collection in front of me to flip through, I seem to recall Closer To The Heart being produced with a picture sleeve earlier than Tom Sawyer. I believe it was a Mercury pressing out of the US...but I could be completely off-base on this. I have earlier singles going back to Fly By Night (unfortunately, Not Fade Away has eluded my collection...and my wallet!) and they all typically have the generic, or sometimes the corporate Mercury or Philips outer sleeves. Then you also have to consider whether the singles were promotional. Great discussion...I'd like to know a bit more if anyone wants to chime in...let's keep the history lesson going! One more thing...Congratulations to the "Boys" today. No matter how long the road was, Rush can finally enter the "official" gates of rock and roll immortality today. Time to celebrate!

Good point but I took the article as just an interesting read. And I'm happy to report I completely disagree with you on vapor trails :)

  40. That line I bolded was particularly disturbing and doesn't bode well for the other prog rock giants that NEED to get in immediately. Thankfully, Rush often mention at least half the bands that need to be in right now like Yes, King Crimson, The Moody Blues, Deep Purple, etc. Also in need of immediate admittance is Jethro Tull, Kiss and Cat Stevens. Those 7 artists/bands it's pretty inexcusable not to have, but that said, ELP, Brian Eno, Donovan, Tangerine Dream, Captain Beefheart, Steve Miller, Judas Priest & Iron Maiden should be in too.

  43. Yes, the whole Commonwealth is very upset by this heinous act. All of my thoughts and prayers are with the families of those effected. Even the local news folks are having a hard time keeping their emotions in check. It is heartbreaking on so many levels. The Marathon is a huge source of pride for Boston. It is a chance for our city to shine as the gem it is and host The Marathon - a testament to achievement and endurance. Shell shocked, angry, sad, defiant, confounded by the motivation - these are all emotions that I am feeling. Feelings shared by most of the world. My understanding of the emotions experienced by those in NYC, Washington, OKC, London, Madrid, and too many others places around the world grew exponentially on Monday. The kindness and thoughts for Boston, and unity with Boston, is very heartwarming. I saw a photo last night of two Iragi boys (and I can't even *imagine* what they have experienced in their young lives) holding a sign saying "We mourn with Boston". :( :rose: http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sad007.gif

  45. Totally agree that the Hall is a joke. Also agree that it is strange that Maiden is not in. That being said, why is Judas Priest not in the hall? Why is Deep Purple not in the hall? Why is Journey not in the hall? Why is Yes not in the hall? Why is Tull not in? Why is Reo Speedwagon not in the hall? Why is Styx not in the hall? Why is Kansas not in? Why is Boston not in? For that matter, why are any number of Rap "Performers" in there? If some of those Rap "artists" and Madonna can get in why not the above groups? Why not even Triumph or Def Leopard (which are more deserving - IMO - than the rap "artists") The OP has a good question but it could (obviously) be expanded as I have just done. Its a miracle Rush got in. I never thought it would happen.

  50. "Hate it"? You're on acid. It's not like it's You Bet Your Life or something else hate-worthy It's an amazing song live but it's been overplayed on the radio to the point that it makes me sick. It gets played at least 4 times a day here. Turn off the radio or change the station. Or would you rather be in my situation where absolutely no Rush is EVER played? Damn dude, where do you live? Deep South? Even the Deep South, where I lived for years, plays Rush. I'm in the Far East.
