  1. Well, Mika, you just saved me a shit load of one finger typing. About the in-ear monitors - back in the "old days" the band would have small wedge-shaped speakers (some bands still do) on the floor right in front of their mic stands, aimed at them so they can hear what's going on. They are called simply, "monitors." Drummers would often have one on each side of the drum riser, sitting at a 45 degree angle toward them. They don't hear much at all from what's coming out of the "front end" speakers... Those are the ones that are hanging from the ceiling and facing the crowd. It's not nearly as loud on stage as it is in the audience. It's still LOUD though... Each guy has a preference as to how much of what instrument or vocal he hears in his in-ear monitors. There is a "monitor mix" sound engineer to the side of the stage who does nothing all night accept maintain the right levels for all three guys. He will have hand signals for each guy, so if Geddy wants more guitar, he just has to look at the monitor mix guy and give him the signal for "more guitar". For example, Neil probably only wants to hear his bass drum and snare drum up fairly high in "his" mix because those are his main time keeping drums that he MUST be able to hear. He may want the guitar a bit louder (or maybe not) and he might want Geddy's vocals loud and clear... maybe the keyboards at medium volume. Every guy is different. The "front of the house" soundman can also talk to the guys through the in-ear monitors. The audience can't hear any of this, obviously. I've seen Neil miss a few stick tosses over the years. He usually just laughs. So, does Alex... at the Moving Pictures Tour, Toronto, 1981, Neil missed a stick toss and Alex started teasing him. You could clearly see Neil mouth the word, "f**k-off" to Alex. It was funny as hell. Then, Geddy picked up the stick and tossed into the crowd. A near riot almost broke out...

  2. Hi! A few things I can contribute, in random order: The things the boys wear in their ears are ear pieces that give them music feed, to put it rather untechnically. With them, the boys can hear what they and each other are doing, to better keep in rhythm/tune. A lot of bands seem to do this now. The first time I glimsped them, I thought they were hearing aids! :D The gadget in the back pocket is a wireless guitar signal transmitter, instead of using wires to attach the guitars to amplifiers. If you watch something like Exit Stage Left, you'll see guitar cables running around everywhere (which must have been a tripping hazard!), and now there aren't. I'm sure Neil has had to put a lot of practice into his drumstick tossing and twirling, and he's not perfect - he has missed his tosses a few times! But he's a bit of a 'practice-makes-perfect' kind of guy anyway. I haven't personally noticed what you've said about guitarists being prone to watching themselves, but I guess it can make sense - lead guitarists are usually more about showing off to their own ego than other instrument players are, I think, if that makes sense. And I think the playing, being in a more human-voice pitch than, say, the bass, makes guitar playing a bit more intimate for the player. And the fact of how they create music is rather impressive, isn't it? I've wondered, too, what goes through Neil's mind when he hears his lyrics put to music for the first time - does he ever have a tune in mind beforehand? Has he ever thought to himself, "Hey, that's not how it should sound!"? I guess the boys really need to be able to give each other space and freedom in their roles. I don't know exactly how their music gets written, but presumably the written lyrics will influence something, a guitar riff perhaps, and be built on that. Or music can be started beforehand and lyrics get matched to what works best. And the music and tempo is quite complex. I think I've heard of Geddy being asked if Rush sets out specifically to write songs in weird time signatures purposely (which, of course, they don't; that's just how the music ends up being!). I think they are just creative enough to be able to shift things around and are very strongly rhythm-based to have the chops to pull it off. I think they are all truly remarkable musicians and have oodles of creativity, and this paired with their obvious musical talent (or skill, as a more appropriate term) makes for an awesome band!

  5. I'm sure there are a few here who like medieval music and related styles of music that was written during that in history. List 'em and if possible, post a Youtube link. I love this one: "Alleluia nativitas" by Perotin.

  12. ONE MEMBER ? Sorry. It was meant as a joke. Didn't mean to offend anyone. :) I think I know what you meant! ;) But, yes, they are all talented, and each boy brings something that would be sorely lacking if he was missing. Well, obviously it would be lacking because the boys make a tripod that needs three legs to stand on and all that analogy, but you know what I mean. Each guy is irreplaceable.

  13. I've wondered some of these questions myself. I'm guessing the ear pieces are to hear what the other guys are playing and the back pocket gadget is a transmitter for the ear pieces?

  14. okay, this is just my opinion, so take it for its worth....(according to snaked, not much) if you are willing to spend over $2000 to meet rush in a meet and greet.....don't bother and use the money to fund going to as many shows as you can.... here's why... a rush show is special in itself, enough said...their careers are winding down and you don't know how many more tours there will be...if at all....so see them now while you can.... the meet and greet lasts 30 seconds, i know its special, i did it....i got the chance to shake their hands, say hi, have a picture taken, see my avatar....i showed alex and geddy my custom done jersey and alex said he saw it the night before at the previous show....it was cool that he acknowledged it...so i am probably biased since i did it...it was a dream come true at the time....i met them.... but on the down side, it was 30 seconds, i have the memory and picture, but i also know that they meet hundreds and hundreds of fans every tour and its great that they do that...i mean that so sincerely, its great....but will they ever remember me, no....and that's okay....i am not trying to be friends with them, they happen to be my musical heros and i love them in concert so i go to as many concerts as i can, and am going to more now, thinking the end of the run is gonna be sooner than later.... all i am trying to say is wouldn't you rather run into alex at the orbit room or some other place and just shoot the shit for a few minutes, i have never had the pleasure but from what i hear, he will engage you with normal conversation if you are normal...especially when they are not on tour and you just happen to be in the same room....i know its a little easier said than done, you don't want to stalk them....(i.e. read neil's books) but another idea that is free....find out what hotel they are staying at, find out their schedules, figure it out, its info that's obtainable if you apply yourself....then see them in the lobby of the hotel, have them sign something, take a quick picture, whatever, if you and a friend are the only fans there, you might actually get more time than at a meet and greet if you do it right.... again, there is a fine line between eager fan and complete stalker....you can't scare them off with your over enthusiasm.... on a side note, my wife feels about the country band Sawyer Brown the way I feel about rush....they were popular in the 90s but now play smaller venues like county fairs, small casinos, they are a touring band and have some die hard fans, but they all tour in one bus, there is one sound guy, no guitar techs, its just a country band, there is no full scale touring.....they just play shows.... well, my wife is in the fan club, we get meet and greets for every show we ever see them, they are just regular guys, some married, some not, we became friendly with the guitar player, even went to his church for a sunday morning service where he plays in the church band....but again, totally different situation and country music is completely different than rock....many country shows i have gone to with my wife, if its not jason aldean at a major arena, or carrie underwood, the artist will stay after the show and if you are willing to wait on line, you can wait and have a picture taken, get an autograph, say hello.... its very similar with nascar drivers, you have to wait on long lines, but if you are willing to do it, you can meet your favorite driver....not all sports or music are like that.... and finally, if you really want to spend $2500 for 30 seconds and its legit, well, its your money, but i wouldn't want to pay for it...i personally would feel that if i had to shell out money for it, it would feel artificial....as said, go find them in a lobby somewhere....its possible, i am sure people on this board have stories of meeting them in various places...

  18. :) :) :) :) :) What a perfectly perfect collection of hair shots! (Is it weird that I like hair shots?) This man has such gorgeous hair, and I'm glad that he's still shaking it around (and keeping it long!). Man, I have a bit of hair jealousy, and I have butt-length hair! (I've got to stop describing my hair length as such, though, because I find that people tend to hear the words 'butt' and 'hair' and draw the wrong conclusion....)

  23. What the hell guys. Chill out. All he was trying to do was have some fun. Sorry, I guess it's in the "Fan Handbook" to not have fun and take everything seriously. The director was most likely asking if they know anyone who was Canadian and Jason Segal probably told them he had connections to Rush. So, they got Geddy and he was in it. The episode was hilarious, his cameo was hilarious, and you guys thinking it's the end of the world is hilarious, to me. Go take a nap. My goodness.

  29. excellent choice...Ave Maria can stay in the vaults Actually, I think Geddy should play a bass solo (Ala Chirs Squire's Amzaing Grace ) of Ave Maria! With the String section backing him up. That would be pretty classic. Just one verse then go into say, The Garden!

  33. Heck yes! And only recently have I delved into albums that I hadn't really explored before, in some cases at all. A lot of the 80s stuff just hadn't been on my radar, as most of my Rush had been brought to me courtesy of my brother and his Rush tastes. Was I ever missing out on so much good stuff! I've been suggesting songs to him, rubbing in his face some of the awesomeness that he's been missing out on. But quite frankly, one album I might end up skipping on my ipod is Moving Pictures - not because it's not that great, by any means, but because I've simply heard the first four songs so much already. And I totally agree (and suddenly I'm getting a flashback from my grade-school teacher admonishing me for starting a sentence with such words as 'because' or 'and' or 'but' - a no-no) with the awesomeness of Geddy. His voice is the first thing that attracted me to Rush, and he has some great singing in every single album Rush has done. Of course, there are great moments in each of the instruments (counting Geddy's vocals as an instrument). This is cliche, but there really is something for everyone in Rush, and the fact that opinions are divided among favourites within the band's repertoire says something, I think. (Though why so many people choose to look down on Vapor Trails is beyond me....). I, too, can be considered one of the lucky ones with regards to liking everything Rush. And after a year now of having Rush's entire catalogue stuck on my ipod, I can honestly say it's been the best collection of music I've ever chosen, and still say, "Ooh! This is a good one!" to just about every Rush song that randomly pops up. In comparison, The Beatles lasted for just a month and a half before I had to replace them!

  34. Raised Catholic, and a nephew of a nun, I grew up with this stuff. We even had vinyls in the collection. I'm so attached to this kind of music, it's hard for me to attend non-Latin service. That and I'd rather play golf.

  37. No, the end would be nigh when Geddy appears on the Big Bang Theory. And of course, the end would actually be here when Rush adds a singer to sing older material in concert.
