Hey guys. This is Dave. I'm the one who put this fantasy rock band/tribute project together and also co-created the Neil Peart Drums sample library with my company Sonic Reality.

If you're curious, here's the deal with this. We're going to be releasing the full version of the song soon along with a cover of YYZ done with ex-Yes multi-instrumentalist/producer Billy Sherwood as well as an original tune we wrote in a different style than Rush but with Neil's drum tracks from YYZ (kind of a trip). We put a little Yes/Genesis influence in there. If you're curious to hear a partial clip of that here you go: http://soundcloud.com/sonicelements/trifecta-pt-1-wip

Anyway, later on we'll release a whole album of Rush covers with various other musicians from bands you might like. John Wesley from Porcupine Tree, Mike Keneally, Nick D'Virgilio, Roger Manning and various other people including myself on keys (and I'm going to perform keyboard drums for the song "Losing It" playing Neil's sampled DW drum kit from our library). All of that to come. Follow the progress of that on our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/sonicelements -OR- we'll have our sonic elements web site up soon and you can check in there... and I'm also on here in case you have any questions about Neil Peart Drums or Sonic Reality or the Sonic Elements progressive rock project. It spans into other territories of classic rock like Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Bowie, Beatles, Supertramp... really unusual mix of elements involved as you can see!

Speaking of here is another clip from the Red Barchetta session. This one is just temporary for the weekend though so check it out and I hope you enjoy it:

I heard about this a while ago and I'm looking forward to it.

I'm working on the video now and might mix the tune this week.

One thing I saw someone ask on another forum is whether Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree is involved in the project. The answer is no to that. We talked about it and after hearing a clip of his band mate John Wesley doing "Tom Sawyer" with us he said to me "Well, I can see how it's appealing and fun..." but, he's busy with his solo material, mixing classic albums like Crimson and other gigs that are higher priority for him which is totally understandable. So he's not a part of it specifically but that doesn't mean we won't work together on something in the future. I did contribute some keyboard/guitar sound design on his latest solo album release "Grace For Drowning".

John Wesley of Porcupine Tree (live band) is involved in Sonic Elements though and we've worked on a bunch of stuff from Tom Sawyer and Limelight to "Time" off Dark Side of the Moon and I am sure more in the future. I've sort of assembled a "dream band" of session players and drummers like Neil that we've been fortunate to produce sample libraries with. Well, that's the whole idea of Sonic Elements as a band. None of these session players who are thrilled to collaborate with these legendary sampled drummers could do Sonic Elements FULL time because they're busy touring and doing their other projects. But taking a little time out to contribute to this one progrock project head up by Sonic Reality gives us the chance to have such cool styles and flavors unique to them put into the mix. It's another "element" of the music that makes a difference... just like hearing Rik sing Rush. It's a compatible component on multiple levels. Even if it is just a one off special thing at least it's a glimpse of what that might sound like.

I think everyone agrees that Rush is Rush and no one can really touch THAT. What a band and the fact that they've stayed together as that trio unit for so many years is something to respect and admire. Each member is so incredible at what they do so the "chemistry" is what makes them them. It's rare but sometimes a member from the band does something outside of Rush like Alex Lifeson playing with Porcupine Tree on a tune or this thing we're doing with Neil where he virtually plays with not only us but YOU too via his sample library (especially the new one coming out with his actual live played grooves). So these sort of satellite 'chemical combinations' are fun too... mixing Neil's sound and his playing with other people and their take on a Rush song or an original or even just a jam in the privacy of one's home and a custom experience just for them. That to me is as "progressive" as the music itself.

I've always been a Rick Emmett/Triumph fan (his voice was very much like Ged's)- He's an awesome guitar player, I guess it's cool to hear him cover the songs, but "It ain't knothin' like the real thing, baby!"

There are other aspects of this, since it is Neil Peart on drums, that are still "the real thing" and yet ARE different than say the original album version. Sonically it has the benefit of this incredible "Snakes and Arrows' DW kit which is the ultimate custom DW kit one could hope to have but also it's recorded with incredible equipment we rented from a famous studio called 'Ocean Way Recording' (which is where I met the Rush guys while they were mixing S&A there... although I had met Alex before because he uses our software). With these incredible mics and equipment engineered by producer Nick Raskulinecz who produces Rush now I think the sounds of the drums are stellar. More open and punchy than the original recording which has a more dead sound... a good vintage classic tight dead sound (that's not a bad quality in drums... just different. Like the snare has less smack to it and less variety of character vs. what he uses today).

So, using Neil's latest drum sounds on a classic Rush song but IN THE STUDIO (as opposed to just 'live' in concert which sounds great with that same kit but... it's not recorded in a controlled studio environment with an amazing array of top quality vintage microphones... that aren't practical to use for a live show). I don't know if I'm getting too technical here but what I am saying is that in the context of these songs it's nice to hear a modern Peart drum sound on classic Rush tunes in the studio... even if the other elements (such as different singers, guitarists or bassists than Geddy and Alex) are different.

In any case, no it's not Rush. Just a piece and even that piece has its differences.

Here's some behind the scenes from the sample session with Neil if you've never seen it:

I'm happy with the original.

I'm happy with the original too... as well as live versions they've done and seeing them play it live. Fortunately one recording of a song (played by the band, covered or played by part of the band) isn't meant to replace the other version and nothing is mutually exclusive. wink.gif All can co-exist.

If someone only wants to listen to the original that is another story. Any cover or live version is meant for those that want to hear an alternate take of the song. Not everyone does... but I do.

Agreed. And welcome to the board. While you're here, are those drum samples ever going to be available for use in other software like Cakewalk's session drummer?

Rik Emmett is my favourite vocalist. Loved him in Triumph but I think his solo work kicks way more ass! He is a very versatile guitarist and has the pipes to boot. Blows EVH right out of the water IMHO. Seen Rik live many times as a solo artist both with full band and acoustic solo. Edited by Mindcore

Fan of Rik myself. I always felt his blues work was far under-rated. His acoustic material is awesome as well. He is quite accomplished.

He deserves his own thread in Music of the Spheres.

Actually they are available now for Session Drummer in Sonar from Cakewalk themselves. http://www.cakewalk.com Although i think we're going to start carrying that on our store as well which has the other Neil Peart Drums titles for Reason, Kontakt and soon other formats. http://www.esoundz.com

I find it hard to really compare guitarists like that Rolling Stone list... but definitely Alex deserves high ranking and Rik I agree is a great guitarist, still has the pipes too.
