FarUnlitUnknown
*****SPOILERS, OF COURSE******** Hey all, I attended the Scranton show with my Dad and younger brother. Amazing performance....I don't know if it was a coveted perfect show (at least by Rush's super-high standards anyway) , but it had to be f'n close. I caught them there for R30, and I think they were even better this time. Really tight, high-energy show. We we under the tent, towards the back, just right of center (Geddy's side). I have a hunch the crowd was a little bigger than R30, but it was probably about the same. The sound seemed to be much louder this time (could really FEEL the bass and the kick in a more visceral way, though we were on the lawn last time, but distance-wise it still wasn't that much of a difference between the two shows). One slight bummer for us was, for the first few songs especially, it was really hard to hear Alex's guitar at all. I mean, in Digital Man I could barely even hear any guitar at all until the solo (which was awesome!) and I would say the same goes for Mission. Those very clear ringing chords Alex plays to punctuate the verses and chorus in that song were basically missing to our ears. But, again, for the middle section solo it was just awesome. I understand song dynamics as well as the acoustics of a live setting (and again we were a little more on Geddy's side so I guess you could expect that) but it did really seem absent in those songs. But overall it did seem to get better, especially after the intermission. Geddy's vocals were great. I swear his vocal performance was actually one of the more definitively improved aspects from last time. Awesome! My Dad and younger bro (20) thought the sound was actually a notch or two louder than it had to be. I think their ears really got tired trying to make out the parts--that it felt a little mushy. I think they felt it could have been just as rocking and visceral without quite so much volume. It didn't bother me so much, though for what little this will be worth both are very involved with music in various way all around. Bro (also a guitarist) is studying production/engineering and so far is really walking the walk in everything he's done both in and outside of school, and he isn't that annoying type to just open his mouth unless he really thinks he has some unique, qualifying perspective on something (if he opens it at all). But again, we all agreed it seemed to get better as the show went on (maybe our ears just adjusted, I don't know...) In fact, we thought YYZ at the end was the best-sounding performance in this regard. I liked this set-list! As far as Snakes and Arrows, I'm firmly in the "great middle-of-the-road Rush album" camp, but even with there being so much from the album featured I really enjoyed the new stuff. I thought Armor and Sword was played extremely well (great drumming), they were so on their game with everything. The new stuff really had a great energy and emotion to it, and I sort of liked how they bunched up the start of the second half with newer material. Nice block. Oooo, Spindrift was so in-your-face live I loved it. Of course, the older stuff seemed to get the biggest crowd reaction. Even when Geddy said, "Now we're going back into the past" before Mission, that was probably one of the biggest initial pops of the early part of the show. Also had the impression that Subdivisions and Tom Sawyer received some of the biggest pops. And of course Neil got lots of love on his solo (and how cool was that...just loved the way he evolved and sort of conflated former performances...and some of the new electronic sounds as well...amazing). I thought Circumstances never sounded better as well. But anyway, I don't see how anyone could be disappointed with this set-list. For me personally, I would say it was at least one Power Windows song and a 'Jacob's Ladder' short of being perfect list (and maybe "Freeze" would have been a cool Perfect Touch replacement for me, and they could have even placed it after 'Witch Hunt'). Anyway, I guess I don't have too much to say that would be unique to the Montage Mountain show, so I'll stop here. It's just amazing how they can still continually maintain this level of performace, and in some subtle ways actually seem better than the last time you saw them. Let me get the Mooontaaage stuff reaedy to share. SPECTACULAR SHOW with one of the most KICK ASS setlists imaginable. A true Rush Fan's setlist. It's rare performances like this that should have pulled out for the R30 setlist, but no matter. The show was one of the best concert experiences I've ever had, and I'm so f'ing happy I was able to keep from knowing what songs they were going to play. For starters, Scranton is a beautiful place. I loved being in the mountains and the venue was a perfect setting. What made it even better was the perfect weather we had for the show. The people I got to meet were amazing, the friends we got to hang out with made it so memorable beyond any expectation, our hosts were TOPS and we were all so fortunate to be welcomed in by such a wonderful family. I can't wait to see these pics. OMG a laugh a minute from the time we arrived until the time we left. The drinks were sensational and got me so ripped. What a night! circumstantial tree
I agree Pags. The setlist was perfect. Tears nearly fell when Mission came on. I knew the setlist ahead of time, but I don't think it spoiled anything for me. One of my favorite things at the concert was the movie at the beginning of set 2 where Alex is wearing a swami hat and his head keeps spinning. "I think I'm going to puke!" LaVillaRush
"though we were on the lawn last time" This might be a stupid question, but can you actually see the stage in the lawn. I didn't know the tickets were on sale, so when I bought mine, I had to get lawn seats because the rest of the ampatheater was sold out! If I can't see the stage, I'm gonna get upset! templejanitor
I agree with FarUnlitUnknow above, his review is right-on. The beginning of the concert sounded a little muddled, but improved as the first set went on. The second set was much better. The 5 new songs to start the second set went great, I think Neil really likes playing them. He was punishing the drums, you could see it in the expressions on his face. Geddy looked like he was ready to party from the start, and the crowd went right along with him. Great appreciation from the audience, and the nice, cool evening air had to be a great lift for them. Entre Nous and Freewill just blew me away, old favorites that just rocked. Guys who sat behind us had seen them in Atlanta and Virginia, they said this was by far a better performance by the band, all 3 just seemed into it. I said after the R30 show in Scranton that I could now die a happy man. But last night was just all-around awesome. A better show you will never see. My 16 year-old son agrees, and he's got a lot more living to do than I do.
