Can I switch support to a different team in middle age?

Can you change the sports team you support?

14 members have voted

  1. 1. I`m weary of my football team and have been casting admiring glances at a different team. Can I switch to someone else?

    • No, you are stuck with them forever, you made your choice and you`re stuck in a loveless marriage
    • Maybe, but it`s like having an affair so you should feel bad
    • Yes, it`s like admitting you are having an affair and that`s better than the dishonesty, make a clean break

IJ made a thread regarding switching team loyalty in middle age. I don't know if he intended to make it a poll only thread but he did. I couldn't vote because none of the options fit well enough.

My thoughts on this are that it's only ok in limited circumstances. They are:

1) An expansion team is placed in your region or a team moved into or out of your region

2).A close friend or family member join a team

3) Team ownership/ management is involved in a scandal you find unconscionable.

I may be missing something so I reserve the right to add to the list.

However, it must be remembered that it's only sports so the stakes are as minimal as it gets.

I would add that if you leave, you can't go back. That guy who was a Yankees fan in the '70s, not so much in the '80s, and then came back to them in the late '90s? Screw that guy.

So if you go, it's over.

Life is too short to finish a book or movie you're not enjoying, and to support a side who bring you no joy, even if they're losing.

I haven`t made a poll before, so frankly I was just satisfied that I didn`t end up taking and posting a photo of my backside or somehow disabling the site. In an ideal world, I would have permitted posts.

The reason for my poll was that I`ve supported Spurs (a London based soccer team, to the uninitiated) since early childhood, but for a lot of reasons, it`s not an enjoyable experience. Off-field ugliness and on-field - errr... - ugliness makes it disheartening. There is another team that have been wonderful for about three years (Leeds) and are everything I wish my team was. It`s not about success, it is about beauty and passion, the things my team are missing.

I used the affair analogy because that`s how it`s seen. Actually, it`s even more serious than that - they say you can change your friends, wife, your religion... but not your sports team. So I wondered how bad it was to others, especially in a land of franchises.

Anybody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I would say that generally Americans are more polyamorous when it comes to sport affection.

I root for both the Royals and Cardinals in baseball because I grew up exactly halfway between them with parents who didn't care at all, so it seemed to fit (it's the Royals in head-to-head, and has been since '85).

I support the Cowboys despite having no real connection to Dallas, but they were "America's Team" when I got into football, so I could watch them on TV every week, and nobody seems to think that's weird.

Ditto Liverpool, btw.

I've supported Sporting KC since they were "The Wiz" but when St. Louis City FC begins play, I'll make room for them, too.

If Leeds will make you happier investing all those hours watching and thinking about, then Bamford's your man!

I'm the same way with baseball. I like the Blue Jays because they're the closest geographic team to me, but I also like the Tigers because they were my grandfather's and dad's favorite team.

I will still drag Spurs, though, and bring you in merely to be gratuitous.

What I want is my man Bielsa, but at Spurs  He`s made a championship team the PL`s most attractive side, whilst Jose managed the opposite at Spurs

I was an Orioles fan all my life until the Nationals came to DC. But not only did I switch to becoming a Nats fan, but I grew to loathe the Orioles.

By the time the Nats got to DC, the O's had been terrible for for several years, so I had not been watching much baseball anyway. But a few years after the Nats arrived, I found out that Peter Angelos, the Orioles' owner, had purposefully trashed the team in order to drive down attendance to bolster his argument the the DC/Baltimore area couldn't support two teams.

So he trashed his own team to keep DC from getting a team. And then suddenly in 2012, when the Nats started getting good, he decided it was time to spend money again on his own team.

Maybe once Angelos isn't the owner anymore, I can have the O's as my American League rooting interest.

Curious if it would make a cheat, a scoundrel, and a charlatan out of me.

Only if the team has a feminine name...like Wisla. ;) Look, Hawks couldn't win a Cup for 49 years. Wisla was almost destroyed by organized crime. Cracovia has been losing for 57 years. I still lived long enough to see dynasties involving all three teams. Last time I checked, you're ten years younger than me, you've got plenty of time. And Leeds has three points less than Tottenham.

Of course you can't you fair weather fripperies....

I think moving to Scotland excuses me from accusations of anything "fair-weathered" :16ton:

Ah, well you see that`s how I can justify it. It`s the opposite of glory-hunting!

Just don't click on the box for poll only topic (or click to remove the checkmark for the poll only setting; I don't remember what the default is).

Very nice, very nice indeed - warming up for his summer gig? There`s something lovely about Bielsa 9-0 Allardyce + Dyche, in the recent duels.

At EURO, he'll probably hit that a mile high. :eyeroll:

As with any relationship, if it is dysfunctional it is best to end it. Abandoning the Seattle Seahawks years ago was one of the best decisions I ever made.

I root for the Oakland A's and the L.A. Dodgers. The Swingin' A's of the early 70's were my first love as a young baseball fan, then I lived eight years in SoCal and grew to love the Dodgers (Garvey, Cey, Yeager, Lopes, Monday...).

Think of it as a divorce and a new start.

I haven`t had that pleasure - yet ;) - in real life, so I`m not sure how to handle all the emotion. Maybe the game vs. Wolves can rekindle the magic

I've had two ...and the chance of a new start is way better than anything involving Wolverhampton Wanderers!!
