There's quality in all of these songs,

But Geddy's affectations on Red Lenses grates, making it the worst song.

Between the Wheels had an incredibly irritating beginning, but it redeems itself nicely.

Red Lenses is a grower, after a while it becomes really fun for all of its goofy 80s noises, and certainly it's a workout for Neil on drums. Does that make it better than anything else here....eh, no. But it's not bad!

I've always been baffled by the amount of hate Red Lenses gets around here  It's my 3rd favourite on the album. I love it

I've always liked "red lenses". It has its own quirky personality. Really like the gear shift between the verses with bass guitar and the choruses with synth bass. The only negative thing I can say is that, as with the rest of the P/G material, the bass sound lessens the effectiveness of Geddy's playing. I like the sound of the Steinberger on other albums (Tears for Fears, Journey, Robert Palmer, etc.) but somehow it just didn't come across well on P/G and sounds kind of flat and lifeless.

That was always my least favorite, and probably still is because of the opening intro's annoying, grating keys. They continue throughout the verses and really bring the song down for me. Great lyrics, chorus and solo, though.

See, I don't mind Red Lenses but it's my least favourite. I find it a bit at odds with pace of the rest of the album which is one of my faves.

I didn't vote for this other track as worst but I must say (probably flying against the wind) that I find Distant Hurly Burly a bit bland. Yeah it's a reasonable opener, in a similar vein, to me, like Dreamline and The Big Money in that they seem like Rush coasting along. So I find it a bit 'samey' and that type of track done before. And let's face it, they've done some cracking openers that tower above these (Spirit of Rad, Bastille even 2112s opener). Imho.

So I was 1/2 tempted to put the Early Warning in just because it has far too much "non-hate" from everyone. And also because some of my favourite tracks have been voted for which has upset me no end! (well, ok, it hasn't really...)

Red Lenses - A duff song on a pretty mediocre album.

...and once again, 2 opposite views (re: album) nestle side by side....

Not sure it's duff but it's my least fave or reet.

Duff might be a bit harsh .... but GUP is in the bottom 5 of my personal ranking of all Rush albums, and Red Lenses is my least favourite

song on that album .... so .... I wouldn't be rushing to listen to it too often!!

Interesting to see some people really don't care for Between The Wheels on account of the intro, that's my favorite part of the song. It's so heavy!

Mediocre? Can't agree with you there. I didn't take the poll because I love GUP, it was one of the albums that hooked me. I came along late in their career so I didn't know as much about the older albums. I played GUP over and over and I don't think there is one song I don't like. As for Red Lenses, the line "The national midnight star, it's true!!' it cracks me up everytime. Putting the tabloids in their place :laughing guy:

I may be dense, but I don't get the National Midnight Star thing.

That's the wonderful thing about Rush, over such a long career they have produced albums that have appealed to everybody. Whilst some find certain albums mediocre, others absolutely adore them ...... but we are still united under the banner of the family of Rush fans. I think that's what make the band so great and indeed this forum also!

Some of the older heads may need to correct me, but I think there was a Rush fanzine in the early '80s called the National Midnight Star -- but the gag of using the title there is the similarity with tabloid names, like the Sun or the Star, with their blaring alarmist headlines. It's a knock on tabloid breathlessness and an inside joke, all rolled into one!

Still my least favorite song on one of my favorite albums.

It's an SCTV thing - a comedy sketch about a tabloid. I think Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson went to school with one or two of the cast members.
