most of the bands I actually hate would be obscure here (arcade fire, the decemberists, mumford and sons, etc). I don't have a taste for a lot of the hair metal or AOR stuff people around here like, but I also didn't grow up in the 70s and 80s so I've never lived in a world where people gave a shit about journey

Arcade Fire is one of the few indie bands I can tolerate as well as Tame Impala but I agree on the rest and I'd add Bon Iver and National to that list. Frankly, Dawes are the less popular but better early 2010s folk band that Mumford should be. I love their throwback Laurel Canyon folk sound.

Springsteen

Green Day

U2

Ghost

Pearl Jam

I love every one of those bands except Ghost, whom I do like.

A couple used to be good but are flat out dreck right now. I'll give you a hint. They both covered a song together in 2006.

I forgot about that cover.

Hm, not sure I know which one's you're talking about. Imo U2 have been creatively bankrupt since the millennium began. Green Day have been alternating hits and misses (I enjoy Mother Of All but generally it's a miss from their standard mark). Pearl Jam... idk. I liked Lightning Bolt a lot when it came out, but I need to check out more that they've done since Vitalogy to see if the reports that they suck anymore are quite accurate. Springsteen just did Western Stars last year, so whatever else he's done since the 80s doesn't matter with that masterpiece under his belt. Ghost are new of course. Wonder what they'll do next.

This list felt like a personal attack

I'll be honest. I got very burned out (no pun intended) on Green Day after listening to them nonstop and playing in a band that covered them almost exclusively. With Pearl Jam, I got sick of hearing them on several radio stations, and I grew very tired of Eddie's voice. I've never really cared for Springsteen or U2. Ghost just bores me.

It's ok, we have so much in common I feel I've only recently realised (like...The Used as your profile picture...that album is one of my faves)

Their first three albums were great. I saw them live at a festival in the summer of 2019.

Billie Eilish (Not a band but CAN NOT sing)

Cold Play

U2

Foo Fighters

Maroon 5

Wow, I enjoy all of these except new Maroon 5.

Also, Billie Eilish is a great singer imo. She reminds me of Billy Holiday. Have you heard her James Bond theme?

Yes and it's terrible! She has no range, just air. No power. My opinion of course. I respect yours.

Billy Holiday?! That’s like comparing Shia LeBouf’s ability to Paul Newman’s. Oh man I couldn’t disagree more. Ellish is modern day pseudo-angst pop bollocks while Holiday’s voice was a finely tuned jazz instrument.

I can feel the blues when I hear Holiday.

I feel like killing myself when I hear Ellish. :P

[edited to add]: I guess there’s nothing really to disagree with. I just don’t see the comparison one bit to Holiday. “Great singer”? - to each his own of course.

I hear it pretty easy. It's in the way the shape of her notes and the way she slides into them. Eilish is definitely more breathy (and younger so a bit less refined), but she uses her voice in a much more nuanced way than nearly any other modern pop singer.

She is nothing like Billy Holiday, and her bond theme is about as by the numbers as it gets.

Crötley Mü, Def Leppard, Ratt, Black Sabbath, Red Hot Chili Peppers

Egads.

The affinity for the synth era has done real damage to his hearing.
