Both albums SUCK!!!!! But Snakes SUCKS less...

I disagree with you twice!

I disagree with you disagreement! ;)

To me, Snakes sucks but half of Clockwork is good which means it doesn’t suck. Some of it does though. I guess that means I agree with 25% of your thoughts - the part that thinks Snakes sucks.

CA >>>>> Snakes

I agree.

Changed my vote from CA to SA

Funny, but I was thinking of switching the other way. Both albums have their good and bad moments.

Snakes has more bad than good imho.

CA is like a rollercoaster...a few great highs but then suddenly there are some pretty crappy lows.

As time has passed, I agree with you. In a truncated Clockwork, you have a really strong collection of songs on an OK-sounding album. The best Snakes offers is a great-sounding collection of just-OK material.

Some of the mixing on CA is just atrociously bad.

What the hell is going on during The Wreckers and Wish Them Well --- they sound like total messes. No dynamics AT ALL. When the strings come in, in The Wreckers, they play absolute havoc with the bricked mix.

Just from a track perspective, I’d have it like this:

1. Caravan

2. BU2B

3. Clockwork Angels

4. The Anarchist

5. Carnies

6. Headlong Flight

7. The Garden

Tracks 3, 4, and 6 I consider to be great while the others are good. The tracks I cut are in the forgettable or dislike zone.

AGREE!!!! CA also has too many different ideas crammed into each song. If they would've simplified some of the songs and toned down the mix it would've possibly been half sh!t instead of total sh!t...

The intro part to Headlong Flight where Geddy & Neil throw in those fills as a nod back to Bastille Day... It sounds fine and all but on general principal I never cared for artists referencing older "classic" songs in their newer material. It just made it seem like they're admitting they have no fresh ideas so may as well recycle old parts.

It's probably to do with the "if I could live it all again" thing, but yeah, it doesn't work for me, especially if you go back and listen to Bastille Day and realize:

a) how thoroughly kick-ass it is, and

b) how good the recording sounds - the instruments have space to breathe in!

The remix of Vapor Trails tried adding that kind of "soundstage" sound, with mixed results (no pun intended :P). It would be interesting to hear a different, less cluttered mix of Clockwork Angels.

Speaking of self-references, was the 21:12 reference on the cover of CA a good or bad idea? What exactly did it have to do with the story? _hi_water_ poll to follow! :D
