Get out of here with that vote Goose. How does anything on RTB, T4E, or SnA hold a candle to Xanadu?

They don't. The question isn't worst song, it's worst album. Xanadu is epic (up to the point it repeats, than it fades for me), and Closer to the Heart is a radio/concert classic. But as a complete album, AFTK has always been a but of a disjointed mess, a pastiche of ambitious prog ideas that range from not quite working to being completely laughable. No other album leaves me scratching my head more than AFTK.

Dreamline and Test For Echo are better than Xanadu IMO

Snakes has the early lead.

Yeah, gotta go with Snakes. T4E, HYF and Presto received some consideration, but each of those albums have a few good songs that still hold up. Only the two instrumentals on Snakes get consistent repeat listens from me.

Someone voted for A Farewell to Kings!

Goose doesn't like Xanadu, so it's possible he dislikes the entire album.

Isn't that so, Goose? ;)

Instead of Cygnus 2 (Keep Prelude), put Xanadu and CTTH on side A of Hemispheres and you've got the best album in their catalog.

Goose your description of AFTK matches what the album cover conveys right?

Just popping in to make sure I don't need to use my Ambassador card.

Looks like I don't. Yay :)

And you're a faithful one too. :)

I'm going to find that thread and resurrect it. The good old days on TRF.

yeah! We need to find out which ambassadors are still around

I’m still here lol. I’m the loyal ambassador of A Farewell To Kings till my dying day.

In which case, Goose, you’re of course entitled to your opinion, but I can’t help but remark that I disagree with it 100% :)

Hmmm... I`m tempted to vote with Goose, and for AFTK. I think it`s the messiest, not the worst or weakest - but I do think it`s the worst of the Fly By Night thru Signals era.

If you were sticking a pin in six random tracks from the entire Rush discography, it`d be hard to make a more confused running order than the title track, followed by Xanadu (which is my least favourite epic), CTTH, Cinderella Man, Magridal and Cygnus X-1 Bk 1. I can`t listen to it as it is, but I can listen to most of the songs in their own right. But I don`t love any of them.

It`s not worthless though, as they ironed things out very nicely over the next three records and probably they wouldn`t have developed as they did without AFTK.

honestly, the goofy/disjointed pseudo-prog of AFTK is part of its charm, and every song on it is better than anything after the 80s. hemispheres perfects the formula though

I think cygnus x-1 is the closest they came to actual dissonance, which is, in a sea of styx and journey shit, very progressive. and tool obviously ripped it off

I don`t want dissonance and goofy and disjointed though, I can do that with my own guitar :(

For me, Roll the Bones.

I think half is excellent, the other half is forgettable.

This. This all the way. This is why I picked RtB.

As far as AFtK, I listened to that every day of my senior year of high school. It may not be their best, but I think it's when Rush started to sound like Rush.

I swear people only dislike S&A because of the vocals... better vocals than the other 2000s albums :rage:

Lol no I have no problem with the vocals. For me the songwriting on SnA is just really forgettable at times and even sub-par. Only Far Cry really strikes me as a great songwriting accomplishment for the band. Maybe The Way The Wind Blows on a good day.
