Fear

What are you most scared of? Discuss it here.

As a man myself (kinda), I am very scared of big bugs and spiders.

I hate lots of big bugs cuz they look ugly and they look like they will fly on you at any moment. \

Bees are worse, because I might not be paying attention to below my feet, and that son-of-a-gun flies, gets angry, and stings my neck.

Spiders are the worst. My house is infested with fast black ones. Worst part is that they usually come into my bedroom (at nighttime) and they look like they will jump on you at any moment...

That's the stuff I am scared of the most.

What about you? Not making this a poll, considering that anyone could be scared of anything at all

Good topic. Could’ve been a poll where TRFers could click multiple options with the last option being “other”.

Not scared of any animal or insect. But as a little kid I was scared of the dark. Then, as an older elementary school kid and also later in high school I was scared of public speaking. I was glad to outgrow and get used to those big fears.

You'd hate my place. Wolf spiders, hoboes, brown recluse...

Funny, I got stung a couple of times by a yellow jacket a couple of weeks ago. First time since I was a kid. I was driving with my arm out the window and got nailed a couple of times.

I'm not fond of heights. Hate airplanes. I live next to a 10,000 foot tall mountain I've driven up very few times since part of the road is on the side of a cliff.

My two main fears are - heights .... I hate cliffs, mountains etc. and also confined spaces .... i would tend to mild claustrophobia.

How about riding in an airplane? That’s as high as we’re going to get (altitude-wise :P ) and pretty confined.

The bigger the plane the better I feel. One of the first times we were in Las Vegas we took a small plane (about 8 people) trip to the Grand Canyon. I vowed .... never again!!

I also just plain refuse to get on to a helicopter!

I have a couple other things I am not fond of either...

Tornadoes are cool, but I don't want one near my town/house...

I really don't like speaking to other people in a large crowded place...

I'll even add something about spiders: if they are on the ground and I have a flyswatter (or something like that), then I could kill em, but if they are on the ceiling, I run for the hills

I was bitten on the forehead by a dog when I was 4, and was next to a friend when his chest was ripped open by a dog a few years after that. So, yeah... Cynophobia. Except that`s an irrational fear, and I have case studies! Barking or approaching me or whatever, I`m pretty terrified and run behind my wife

I wish I was scared of a rare thing or something I could more easily avoid.

Oh yeah, and I kinda stay in the house most of the time because I`m not keen on interactions in the real world.

Of course you don’t want a tornado near your place. Only a fool would want that.

If you were at a wedding reception with a hundred or so people and others talked to you, you’d be scared?

Does that include giving speeches?

And what is “a large crowded place”? A concert? A football game? A party?

I'm not a fan of heights where if I trip, I die. Planes or tall buildings don't bother me that much, but hiking the 14ers in Colorado was a sore trial (and is why I never finished). I did have a very unpleasant experience driving across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (very windy day, rain), so if I had to do that again there would be some anxiety.

I can kind of see that.

When you gave speeches in school were you scared shitless like I was? Back then I'd be sweaty and forget important points in my topic. Then, I'd go to the front of the class and though it usually wasn't a complete disaster, I was never comfortable and my speech scores were never anything to write home about. I didn't get over that fear until late in high school. I didn't start giving decent speeches until college. Better late than never I suppose.

What about various rollercoasters? The traditional carriage type ones, the ones where your feet are dangling, or the other ones where you're standing or lying face down?

I haven't been on a roller coaster in years, but doing so again would depend on the setting. Is it a shitty county fair set up by some carnies who smell like cabbage? Oh, hell no. Is it at Six Flags, with lots of financial incentive to avoid lawsuits and bad press? Then probably.

What I would not do under any circumstances would be that swing thing that puts you in a chair and then spins around until the riders are nearly horizontal. At my weight, if the chain broke, I'd land three counties over. Nor would I do the "death drop" thing that takes you up, up, up and then falls.

Oh, and zip-lining?

It's easier for me to give a presentation to a hundred people than to approach someone at a party. :P

Bit of a buzzkill this, but my greatest fear is the medication I have to take stops working.

It's the only thing that stops me being a very real danger to myself and others , so dread would be a more appropriate way of referring to it.

Your experience as a young child is bound to have contributed to your fear ..... when I was not much older (about 8) , myself and another kid were messing about in his house and he locked me in a big old wardrobe. It was a funny prank for about 10 minutes and then I started to panic. About a further 15 mins later his mum came in from out in the garden to see what all the noise was about and unlocked the door. I have never been right with enclosed spaces ever since.

These days, I reckon you`d get opportunities to talk through these things before they affect your adult life in a negative way.

Spiders....by far my biggest fear. And I agree with the post above. I could speak in front of 1000 people (and have), but I am very awkward in small social situations, if I don't know the people well.

For those who are uncomfortable in small social situations, what is it exactly about those situations that make them uncomfortable?

I am not very comfortable with talking to strangers IRL

now yes you are kinda a 'stranger' but it's not like we are physically meeting each other
