The Handmaid's Tale on Hulu. Absolutely fantastic piece of work.

Castle Rock on Hulu. Entertaining, but not nearly as good as I wanted it to be.

Handmaid's Tale is excellent. Dark and depressing as hell but still excellent.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I felt about Castle Rock too.

Handmaid's Tale and Mad Men are the two greatest shows of our age.

^ I prefer the extended LoTR films to their theater versions; how do the Hobbit extended versions compare?

I agree with you regarding the LOTR extended versions...

...the same could be said about The Hobbit trilogy of films as well.

The Lad and I started Fellowship last night and...I love the universe they created, but big-eyed Frodo really gets on my nerves. We made it through him getting stabbed.

I agree with The Handmaid's Tale being in that conversation. I can't say I would put Mad Men there though. It's a very good show but I've always seen it as a few notches below shows like Handmaid's Tale, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad and the first four seasons of Dexter just to name a few.

Perhaps what hurt my enjoyment of Mad Men was the ridiculous amount of praise it got when it was on. I just didn't feel like it ever quite lived up to it. Now that the show has been off the air for a few years and I don't have to constantly hear how it's the greatest thing ever, I can rewatch it free of all that and maybe I will see it differently.

At Rivendell now...long expose...

Liv Tyler certainly keeps one's attention through all the back story stuff.

I think that's fair. I personally love Mad Men, to me it's the best scripted drama I've ever seen. As for the shows you mentioned, Dexter was always very good, I thought Breaking Bad was woefully overrated and I hear so much good about The Sopranos, and it's from the guys behind Mad Men, that I should give it a go!

I'm almost through season 2 of Handmaid's. The number of times I find myself wincing or putting on what my wife calls my "sucking on a lemon," face per episode has to be at least 5.

Yeah, The Sopranos is a must watch. With Breaking Bad, you need to be patient. It's a slow burn story but when it picks up, it's as good as anything. The show doesn't overstay its welcome either. There's a major issue with American tv shows where once a show gets popular, they keep it on long past it's expiration date. Breaking Bad was only five seasons and told the story it needed to tell and nothing more. I think that adds a lot to the enjoyment. It didn't go too long and get too far away from the main plot.

Have you seen Justified starring Timothy Olyphant as an outlaw US marshal? I just finished up watching that. Like Breaking Bad, it didn't go too long (6 seasons) and told the story it set out to tell from the start.

What about Sons Of Anarchy or The Shield?

Honestly, I don't think three seasons of mediocrity is enough to convince me to suddenly rush to finish Breaking Bad. I wi give Sopranos a try though!

I've never seen Justified, but I do rate Olyphant highly!

You should certainly check out Justified. Olyphant is the complete opposite of the his character on Santa Clarita Diet. Still pissed that show was canceled without a proper ending.

Loved Santa Clarita. Drew Barrymore’s best role in years. Shame on Netflix for cancelling that and the MST3K reboot while they keep making Happy Madison crap.

Watching classic Looney Tunes on HBO Max and the cartoon is Alpine Antics.

Justified is absolutely great from the go.

The first season is a bit "problem of the week," but it really finds its stride in season two and soars. So many great characters, so many great lines; the whole cast was great.

My recent watch was the first time I saw it since it ended. I think I enjoyed it more with my second viewing. I forgot how good it was. Walton Goggins performance is brilliant. Great actor. I can't decide whether I like him more in this or The Shield.

We are into the mines of Moria...a very fun part of the movie.

That whole sequence in Moria, from the watcher in the lake to the fight on the bridge, is the best part of that movie; really propulsive stuff.

Making out way through Return of the King, right now. It's long, but much more enjoyable than the Two Towers, which drags. Not that Towers doesn't have has some great moments, but in general it feels the most unnecessarily long of the three.

I will be interested, then, to hear you feeling at the end of Return because I would argue that one is the most draggy. I always thought the pacing was better in Fellowship, less good in Two Towers, and slowest in Return. Maybe I should watch again.

We're not at the end, yet. I do remember it dragging out, much in the way that through the entire series no major character can die - or even approach death or imminent danger - without a ten-minute soliloquy. lol Edited by goose

Easily the best part of the Ralph Bakshi movie. Maybe the only really good part, though I thought he did the Black Riders well, despite them being brown and limping around making mewing noises like tired Emo teens. Bakshi's scene at Weathertop was better than Jackson's, which made the Black Riders seem rather easy to chase away; apparently all it takes is a little fire and some Mama's Family videos (Nickelback is also effective according to Elven lore; it's in one of those appendices that only Jackson has access to; lot's of crazy stuff in those secret appendices... saucy dwarves, warrior princess elves, hash-smoking bird-poop-covered wizards...craziness).

I thought that The Two Towers was the one movie of the three that might be been better in its theatrical version. Bit, I'm all for more Middle Earth so I'll take the extra scenes.
