The Album Cover...What Are Some Of Your Favs?

Greetings Net Boys and Net Girls,

This is a topic that I think about from time to time.

This thread was inspired by Blueschica's post in Entre's "Playlists..." thread.

She said,

"I'm just still wedded to the experience of listening to an album and holding the physical cover while you listen, reading the details and enjoying the art work at the same time."

I literally have been collecting music for 50 years now and could not agree with Blueschica more.

In the days before the internet, you got all of your information about the band and the music from the album covers and sleeves, as well as from music magazines such as Circus, Cream, Hit Parader, Rolling Stone, etc.

What does the band look like now, who played what, who produced, who did they thank, where was it recorded, the lyrics and graphics...

...the album cover set the tone for all of that and grabbed your attention even before the shrink wrap came off.

So, put your thinking caps on and tell me, what are some of your favourite album covers and why?

KISS "Destroyer" is one such album for me.

It was 1976 and I was 13 years old and was at Fay's Drugs in Shop City in the part of Syracuse where I grew up.

The songs, "Beth" and "Detroit Rock City" were already being played on the radio.

I saw that record that night and something inside of me just clicked...I had to have it.

I remember bringing it home and listening to it over and over and over again...

...studying the album cover and sleeve like they were holy scriptures.

Aww, geez, thank you, Cat! I hope everyone gets to have that experience with albums that they love . . . . and it's so true what you said about the album and the sleeve being the source of so much information. I always got the feeling the guys in Rush must have enjoyed album viewing themselves, growing up, the way they put jokes in the liner notes, and brought to you by the letter. . .

Probably spent more time looking at this than any other- (until my sister took a marker and wrote "Paul Is Dead, I miss him". all over it!). Figuring out who everyone was turned out to be an education! My dad was into looking at the cover with us.

OK, I never said I was normal. :P For some reason my roommate and I always thought this was hilarious . . .I still like the album a lot!

A lesser band wouldn't have the guts to put such a garish cover on such a great and hit-packed record. REO knew exactly what they were doing, and it's iconic because of that.

This was one friends' older siblings always had- I spent more time looking at the cover than listening until I was a little older- took a few years to "get" Janis Joplin but I love to listen to her now.

Iconic? It's hardly a world famous timeless classic, this cover is hardly the most beloved or most famous

Thin_Lizzy_-_Jailbreak.jpg

Thin Lizzy's "Jailbreak" is another such album for me.

Another album I purchased with my paper route money was I was a lad of just 13 way back in 1976.

"The Boys Are Back in Town" was getting a lot of radio airplay and I "needed" more!

Never has an album cover so beautifully matched the musical content within.

Still one of my all time favs today!
