Rise of Skywalker [SPOILER-stuffed pinata thread]

Finn said a few times that he wanted to tell Rey something. But he never did. Or did I miss that somehow?

That did seem to fall by the wayside. According to this, which cites Abrams, it was that he was force-sensitive. That makes sense.

Why would he have to tell her? She would already know.

Come one...set reason aside and suspend disbelief! ;)

Probably why they didn't follow up on it. They could do more of that, imo. Less direct exposition (i.e. explaining out loud) makes for better stories/films.

General Hux: I'm the spy. [He should have looked right at the audience when saying that] :D

I agree that less direct exposition is better but for this particular thing with Finn, I think they should’ve just not had it in there at all. It did nothing for the story.

The Hux spy thing just should’ve been handled differently.

All in all, these are nitpicky things and I liked this last Star Wars entry. Including these minor blemishes and a few others not yet mentioned, I’d probably give it a B+ and place it in the top 3 or 4.

Might have to give it a second cinema viewing.

Perfect example. Weird that it made the cut, or even past script review. Just unnecessary.

What bugged me about the "I'm the spy" line is that "the spy" part. Was Hux part of the rebel conversation about having a spy in the First Order? It was like he was making reference to a pre-existing conversation -- which he was, of course, but it was a conversation the audience knew, but he could not have, unless I missed something. Maybe the line should have been _more_ explanatory, more like "I've been helping your lot."

At the same time, I recognize that comes perilously close to the "But they didn't do it the way I wanted them to do it" kind of whiny criticism I hate so much. So feel free to ignore me.

I did like it, though, despite all the well-deserved above points, like the yadda-yadda'ing of Palpatine's survival, etc. I'll happily watch it again.

Just as another opinion, I assumed the thing Finn wanted to tell Rey was his feelings/love for her (which was one reason the Rose character was so sidelined in this one), but he recognized Poe probably felt the same way, so he didn't want to upset the friendship. I'm not sure how you pronounce it, but . . . .

I don't think wondering about such obvious plot holes is nitpicking. The spy thing...how is that even kept a secret when he's so close to Kylo...a master mind-reader? Let me guess, the Emperor is blocking it because the spy's betrayal is part of the grand scheme... :eyeroll:

the other dumb thing he did was tell Rey his plan that he needed her to strike him down. He should have just taunted her and she would have light sabered the shit out of him.

The prequels were riddled with them, so you'd think they'd learn.

I'm still not sure I believe him about that. I feel like if Palpatine is powerful enough to come back from the grave, he must be powerful enough to have realized and sensed a few things through the force: 1. Kylo/Ben was very near and coming to help Rey, 2. Rey was never going to strike him down and embrace the dark side, just as Luke wouldn't, 3. (I think he already knew this) Kylo and Rey's bond was just the source of power he needed to come fully back to life, and 4. he could tell Rey a little lie to make her question wether she wanted to kill Palpatine in order to stall long enough for Kylo to arrive. This movie reminded me that believing anything Palpatine says is usually what gets people in trouble in these movies. He is eternally a manipulator, which is how he usually wins. I agree with you about the lightning though, lol. The dude is always overestimating his abilities with the force lightning. That lightning was what distracted him from realizing Vader was going to throw him off a ledge in 6 too!

Also supposedly there's a 3 hour directors cut that has a bunch of scenes some people have been clamoring for and Disney might be releasing it in theaters in a few weeks $$$

Despite my feelings about Disney's moneymaking schemes, I'd gladly go see it.
