So I tend to not listen to MP that often so I don’t get tired of it. Plus there are a few songs that are overplayed on radio. The other day I put the cd in my car and tried to make an effort to hear it fresh and catch small nuances. WOW Neal is a beast on this one. The album just flows and there is no fat. I see why some people say it’s the best. So my point is it’s impossible to pick their best. I still like gup and signals better BUT Tom Sawyer is one for the time capsule.

I think even Neil himself said the album was a turning point artistically as well as sales wise. Some people say Permanent Waves, but I think this album was the crossroads between their songwriting style from the '70's to the '80's.

Hardcore Rush fans may often bring to mind images of long hair and silk kimonos, or double necked Gibsons and Rickenbackers, or naked figures and red stars...but in reality nearly all Rush fans have one album in common as one of their favorites, and that album starts with Tom Sawyer and ends with Vital Signs.

It's only my second-and-a-half favorite Rush album...but it's still pretty sweet. ;)

Agreed. The much more casual fan will blurt out "2112" when anyone mentions Rush, but Moving Pictures is a much better album.

Agree with much of the sentiment here. It's their best album - not my favorite but certainly top 5. Side 1 spreads like butter. I'm a big proponent of track sequence and that album nailed it.

I too, rarely listen to this record for much of the same reasons, but will revisit it every few years.

All I can say is that it is unforgiveable to start a sentence with "so"......

So sue me!

Carl Spackler : So I jump ship in Hong Kong and I make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas.

Angie D'Annunzio : A looper?

Carl Spackler : A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

Back on topic .. it must have been magnificent when they listened to the entire album playback after it was recorded. They have a lot of amazing albums, but that one is definitely special. Hard to pick a favorite song .. probably Limelight, although I love every track (especially the long synth intro to Camera Eye - what a great and strange atmosphere that creates).
