Bowling? Is It A "True Sport"...??

I used to do triathlons including an Ironman. I have a hard time equating bowling with the training and exertion required to compete in events like that. Maybe different levels of "sport".

There is no need to equate the two. There are all kinds of sports and sporting events. Very few require the same levels of training and physical exertion. Triathlons are definitely on the far end of the spectrum.

Auto racing is a sport too. There's a certain amount (probably a lot) of physical and mental endurance required.

People can easily test their hypothesis that auto racing is not a sport. They can get behind the wheel ..... You're competing against over 30 other cars, and at any moment, you could die. One split-second wrong move from your arms, and you (and maybe others) are dead.

It's not just a sport. It's a serious sport.

When I stopped 25 years ago, I was in the 280 range most games. It took me a long time to get there.

Bowling is a sport.

People don't seem to get the precision involved in sports like bowling, golf, darts, archery, curling, marksmanship.

So if danger is an important criterion . . .

.....for something being deemed a true sport? No, it’s not an important criterion. In the case of auto racing, it’s just an extra level of pressure put on the contestants.

280 most games? Uh, I think not.

lol. I thought the same. Pretty sure at least we know better. I have bowled in leagues with pros and they can average 250 plus which is staggering to contemplate. I have seen 800 plus series bowled a number of times but they still don't happen every day. I would venture to guess there are much more 300 games bowled than 800 series. 280 a game? I think not...

Just the right spin and speed to resolve a split. Starting at just the right drop point at your end of the alley. Each split has it's own characteristics.

Just the right spin and speed to get a strike in the first place.

Then take into account your own physical tendancies. I used to pull to the left when I'd get tired....which required adjustments in technique late in the game.

All that kind of stuff.

So it isnt just "rolling" a ball?

Just like pitching isn't just "throwing" a ball.

hahah I love it when Boston can't throw the ball. Or hit the ball. Or catch the ball.

***Alert*** :beathorse:

So I see on the news this morning that skateboarding and rock climbing are added to the Olympics as "sports."

Ugh.

At least one of the rock climbing events is just a race to the top of the wall; that seems clear enough.

Maybe you're out of the loop, but skateboarding has been around a long time and is very popular. Watch some of those X-Game broadcasts and see how many fans are there. It will be no different than figure skating as far as judging goes. People supposedly knowledgeable about the sport will try and be as objective as possible about the tricks performed.

Oh, I get that it's popular, and I do understand that it's been around for a long time (I've seen Lords of Dogtown). I just don't think -- as the Olympic Cmte must -- that those things are reason enough to enshrine something at the pinnacle of sports in the form of passing out Olympic medals.

And if the counterargument is that the Olympics are not the pinnacle of sports, then I would suggest that's also true, and it's because of the dilution of things like this.

Now, if you point out that the IOC is a corrupt body of grasping leeches whose graft and avarice is so staggering as to approach some sort of sport of its own, and adding sports that will increase TV ratings and sponsorships is simply what they do, well, there's no good argument for that!

So roll on, skateboarders!

In a related story, the Nevada State Legislature is debating a current bill that would make complaining about kids becoming anti-social computer addicts a Class-C felony....

The E-Sports Club came to a recent school board meeting and presented their accomplishments from this year. One of them got an extra $500 dollars for college! I don't know if there's any money for Minecraft, so I may have to get my son to work harder on the more violent games.
