What we have left is each other

I have been thinking about this over the weekend, after the whirlwind day of going to Geddy's book signing on Friday. I wanted to thank everyone here and other Rush fans for making Rush fandom a great place to be! I ended up explaining this to my husband (who made 3 new friends on Friday, lol) when he said yesterday, "Everyone was so nice when I was in line for the book signing; it made things so easy for me. The guys around me held my place and didn't mind when I kept leaving to check on you. (long story; I didn't feel well for a bit.)

I was telling my husband that yes, seeing and meeting other Rush fans was almost as big of a thing as seeing Geddy. (of course, we already know this . . .) It was a huge part of the day to meet the people around us and (of course!) they were all friendly and very devoted. There was an ER nurse near us that worked the overnight shift, slept 3 hours and started the drive from southern Maryland to come to Philadelphia. An older guy in a man skirt (I can't even describe it other than something they would wear as a joke on McHale's Navy  but he owned it) and his wife were a riot to talk to and had driven 5 hours from Virginia. A very young guy right behind us had driven from upstate New York, not knowing anything about Philly and doing the long drive alone.

Everyone here from TRF has been so supportive, also, through my seven months of posting, "I hope Geddy comes to Philly!" over and over. Thank you! Special shout out to Rod from Toronto, who spread positivity when we were stuck in gridlock on the way and I didn't think we would get to the bookstore at all. Anyway, while talking to my husband about Rush fandom and reflecting on all of the "we came because we don't know if we will get a chance to see Geddy in person again" comments, it really hit home with me that maybe all we have left of Rush is the music (which is huge, not denying that), but also the memories, and each other. I'm so glad you guys have made the Rush universe a great place to be.

I've met a few RUSH fans from two concerts of the band I attended on the 'Time Machine Tour' and 'R40 Live Tour'.

The majority of these fellow fan encounters has been brief 'one time encounters' which weren't local, and nothing more.

People also have busy lives and don't always have time for everyone.

I also lament about couples in relationships who share a bond regarding the band, which for a single person like myself is a little discouraging.

Just my two cents. It's been a bittersweet journey in a way.

When I am asked, as I inevitably am, why I would take the time and $$ to go see 5 or 6 shows each tour, when I knew pretty much what songs they'd play, and in what order, and I knew the band and crew worked very hard to make it sound exactly like the record (removing the spontaneity, and hence the uniqueness, from the show), I'd invariably conclude it was interaction with the people I met on this board (and rushtour.com, R.I.P.) that kept me going. And, as much as I loved the shows, and would get lost in the music (and thrash about, becoming a threat to the safety of myself and those in my vicinity), I find myself missing the face-to-face interaction with other Rush fans more than I miss the shows themselves. Of the forty-some shows that I got to see, and through all of the pre-party hoopla and craziness, I can think of only two people I ran into who behaved like jerks. The hundreds and hundreds of others I came in contact with seemed to treat everyone they met with respect, dignity, and kindness. And I suspect they took that sunny outlook of the world with them when they weren't interacting with other Rush fans, too.

Now, go away, before I start blubbering...

The journey is as fun as the 15 seconds. But Rush fans in general are like that.

Thanks for the shout out, blueschica! I was worried you'd miss the book signing, and was genuinely happy to learn that you made it. I only attended Rush shows in Brazil, but after going to the Grapes Under Pressure thing and seeing Alex play a charity gig a few weeks ago, it dawned on me how cool and friendly all rush fans are!!! Of course I had a taste of it hanging out here "virtually", but meeting all those long time fans face to face - some of which, with connections to the band - made all the difference. I wish I'd met them all a long time ago so that we could see the band together, but oh well...

I have never met a Rush fan that I didn't like. I met many people 16 years ago in Toronto, during Rushcon, who I still talk to today. I got to meet Geddy in Philadelphia too, he was so nice. I am thrilled that the band that I admire most has inspired me to create, we brought the dragon that I created with my husband that is modeled after the r30 dragon t-shirt, he said , "Oh my gosh, is that thing alive?" It was cool that he saw that our creation is just as much alive as my husband and I see our dragon. We also gave Geddy a cd from our band, another thing that I would have never accomplished without Rush. I saw Rush when was I 14, and told my Mom that I wanted to play the guitar, within a week I had a guitar and lessons. I have a lot to thank them for, the underlying theme of creation, is what they leave behind for me. I am forever grateful. The friendships are even better.

I don’t visit this section of the forum often anymore, but how wonderful to see this thread...when my older brother introduced me to the band, in 1979, it was always the music that we had to share, growing up- he started seeing them live on the tours supporting Signals and Grace Under Pressure, but I was still a bit young, at that time. And since I started going to Rush shows, in 1990, there were always the fans with whom to share the experience, the friends we make along the way. And now that the band is no longer active, it’s just awesome that we have a community like this, and like-minded people who just ‘get it’.

And that brother of mine, who introduced me to Rush in the first place...today happens to be the thirty-third anniversary of his death.

:rose:

Thank you all.

Obrigado, Rodrigo...it has been a long time, and I look back fondly now at everything he did for me- the most lasting thing is that he made me a Rush fan when I was six years old. And after many years, that has led to friendship with all of you- and that’s why I said thank you all.

I want to keep more in the spirit of blueschica’s original post- it is all a very positive thing!

That's very sad. It never hurts less either no matter how many years roll by. :rose:
