I've never been a Metallica fan. I bought Master of Puppets in 1986 and was very disappointed. I just couldn't get into it. And in 2016 I listened to the whole album on youtube to see if I'd feel differently about it now and see if I'd been missing out, but it sounded just the same, like a bad punk album. I buried that Music For Nation vinyl copy in the pond in the field not far away in 1986 and in 2016 I had no urge to go out and dig it up again! Let Metallica stay buried.

That is THE greatest "speed/thrash/whatever" heavy metal album of all time.

I love Metallica and the album but it's not the greatest of the genre. Rust In Peace from Megadeth is. There's really only two songs on Puppets that are truly thrash and those are Battery and Damage Inc.

I’d still call quite a bit of MoP thrash, but not to the extent that their peers’ concurrent releases were. Peace Sells, Reign In Blood, and Among The Living are closer to the blueprint, but I don’t think MoP doesn’t fit within the plan.

Agreed on Rust In Peace though. TAKE NO PRISONAAARS!

Punk? There is nothing punk about that album.

There's something crap about it though, from top to bottom, IT f***ing SUCKS!

Well, sucking and punk rock go hand in hand together so I can see why you think it sounded like that.

Maybe you haven't heard the right kind of punk. How about some Propagandhi.

That song had a more metal style riff than a punk one. Still, it's an ordinary, unspectacular song like most of the genre. The only punk band I ever liked is The Offspring. They're punk but at least they have a standout sound.

The Offspring are as punk as Toto is.

As far as I know they have always been labeled as punk rock.

To my understanding, they’re widely considered punk in the same way Green Day is.

But Green Day are punk. They sound like every punk band ever.

I agree they are punk, but not that they sound as much like the Ramones and Dead Kennedys.

Oh, it certainly fits the bill. But I always felt Metallica had more traditional metal elements to their songs with some thrash thrown in. They play thrash just not all the time.

I’d agree for everything after Kill ‘Em All. That debut is pretty thrashy all around to me, even if it’s a very undeveloped thrash.

Punky heavy metal:

And the Steve Harris statement that he hates punk is really lame and kinda hypocritical.

I'm proud to have original 1st pressings of all the vinyl from the first record (bought 1 week after release day) all the way through to the Black Album. Most of the 1st pressing 12"'s as well.

Love Metallica.

I kinda agree, but I always found Hangar 18 to be much more classic heavy metal than thrash.

MOP was definitely the beginning of 'proggier' Metallica. Edit: I lied - you can kind of hear it on RTL too. Cliff was a Rush Fan afterall. ;)

You can hear it on KEA! What’s proggier than a five minute classically influenced but still bluesy bass guitar solo? :haz:

When it comes to thrash I much prefer bands like Overkill, Testament, Megadeth, Slayer, Death Angel, Exodus, Kreator, Destruction and Sodom.

Talk about sounding similar!! :)

Those bands don't have wah wah addicts on guitar, or drummers who can't quite keep time, or fake macho vocals.

I never heard this punk vibe people talk about with that album. It's just a metal album to me.

I meant they all sound similar to each other. And a step down from Metallica

A BIG step up from the tired, sell-out posers with a guitarist who can't even play the band's own riffs and needs the drummer to help him relearn it.

Yes KISS are better than Metallica, pretty much every band are. I might even prefer U2 over them and I hate U2.

Sell-out!! Hahahahahaha..you mean popular, which doesn't equate to sell-out. I have no interest in the present-day Metallica. Their 80's output wipes the floor with every band you mentioned. Especially Sodom.. Their schlock makes me want to sodomize my ears with an icepick. Edited by Mithrandir
