I bought the first album when it came out because of the cover. I was shocked at the greatness of the music to be honest. The totality of the music was the draw and not any one individual...

Ditto! Only difference is Jamie’s Cryin’ was popular so I bought the album for that song. I was shocked that the entire album was so good!

Easily 1 of the best debut albums a rock band has released. I'd put it neck and neck with Boston for best debut album by a rock band.

Those two would certainly be in my top 5 debut albums of all time. Living Colour's debut is my favorite though. Boston and VH could be #2 and #3 respectively.

You guys are all correct.

VAN HALEN

BOSTON

VIViD

Might even have to throw in Pearl Jam's "Ten."

"MONTROSE"

"APPETITE"

Black Sabbath - s/t

Stone Temple Pilots - Core

The Doors - s/t

All "arguably" the band's best work. Sabbath's debut isn't their best album to me, but to a lot of people it is.

The Doors! Yes!

I adore "Core" but it's not in my top ten.

Subscribed to this Youtube critic a month ago. His latest Trainwreckord episode. His One Hit Wonderland series is worth checking out as well.

Spot on review. Heard it for the first time 7 years ago and it’s that bad. They save the worst for last. EVH should never sing again.

I love Todd, he's hilarious.

Although his affection for Closer confounds me.

Eddie but I think Alex is a great drummer.

What makes him a great drummer? This question isn't meant to challenge your opinion. It is sincerely asked.

I know you weren’t asking me - but Alex is extremely dynamic. Listen to Hot For Teacher, then Big Bad Bill then Poundcake, then Good Enough. He can go from off the rails, busy as hell to restrained and tasteful. He’s also one of the first capable double kick drummers in pop-hard rock - using 2 kick drums not just for fills, but to drive the rhythm of an entire song (Get Up, Hot For Teacher). He also swings like a m***********er. Sinner’s Swing is harder than just about any Rush composition for drums.

It’s crazy to me that he never played with anyone other than Van Halen.

Not sure his style and sound would have fit with anyone other than Van Halen.

I will listen to all of those songs, and thank you for answering me.

I'm just surprised more people don't mention Alex Van Halen when they talk about good drummers.

Alex says he and his brother practiced, practiced, and then practiced more. Even when they "made it" they still practiced. Van Halen worked very hard for their fame.

Are you a drummer too?

Thanks again for calling my attention to these songs.

I never paid any attention to the drums in Hot For Teacher. I never heard anything quite like that. Pretty incredible.

You think Eddie overshadows Alex?

Eddie's playing certainly steals the show. But I never felt Alex didn't get his due for the great and unique player he was. I always thought Alex was held in pretty high regard for his playing.

I just don't recall anyone on here gush over him. They may have, but I don't remember. Usually, along with Neil, it's Bonzo and Stewart Copeland.

This is going to sound strange.

When I first heard 'Everybody Wants Some!!'; the intro of the song has this 'apes in the jungle' vibe with the drumbeat, guitar sounds, and David Lee Roth making strange Tarzan noises. The intro bit should be featured in National Geographic documentaries.

The other one that's hilarious is rap artist Tone Loc's song 'Wild Thing', which samples some of 'Jamie's Cryin'.

Back when VH was new - the vibe in my neck of the woods was all about EVH and how amazing he was as a guitar player. Which was true at the time. There was no one quite like him (Randy was just getting started, and the new generation guys were all watching EVH too).

But then there were the songs, fun. Heavy but you could sort of groove to them. Dave, his in song antics. The backing vocals.

VH was a total package - fun band with a talented guitar player. Even if 1/2 the songs on the records were corny filler material.
