I've never heard of this fellow, but I'd be interested in checking "Hunger" out. Thanks for the recommendation

Any specific translation to look for/avoid?

The excerpts kinda reminded me of Japanese literature (old-school as well as 20th century), of which I am a fan.

Thanks! I think the best translation is the one by Sverre Lyngstad.

I read Hunger a few years ago and liked it very much. I'd recommend it to fans of Dostoevsky (whom Hamsun was influenced by) and Kafka (whom Hamsun influenced).

Hey Mike are you back? Where you been for the last 10 months??

Hey, Pat. Just been doing other stuff, but I'm probably back now. How are things?

Things are good mate. And things at TRF are the same, although at the same time that you left so did Your_Lion and Beanie. Beanie has been back but she seems to have gone again too. And Lucas has disappeared now too.

How do you like the Lions chances this year?

Yeah, I noticed that some of the old familiar faces aren't around anymore.

The Lions seem to be trying to imitate the Patriots now after they tried (and failed) to be like the Saints a few years ago. Speaking of the Saints, do you think they'll be the strongest team in the NFC this year?

We might have but we need to get a WR and a TE, I think that was one of the reasons we slowed down on offense in the last few games. That and the injuries on the O-line. So far in free agency we've got a couple of D-linemen, re-signed Teddy Bridgewater and got a RB replacement for Mark Ingram who's gone to Baltimore.

How do you like Matt Patricia?

I saw that the Saints might be interested in signing ex-Lion Ziggy Ansah. He was injured so often in Detroit but definitely talented.

I think Patricia is taking the defense in the right direction, but the offense has been clunky for years now, and the offensive line never seems to play as well as it should.

Yeah we've apparently had a visit from Ziggy. The front office seems to think we need another D-lineman, I think because we lost Okafor to the Chiefs. We have Cam Jordan and last years rookie Marcus Davenport so it would mostly be part of a rotation I think.

Were you disappointed with the Lions 6-10 finish last year? I saw the opening game against the Jets where the Lions really got dismantled and I was surprised considering the Jets only had a rookie QB in his first game.

Ziggy might fit well as a rotation piece since he can be excellent at times but is unfortunately hurt a lot and inconsistent.

It was a disappointing year, and the Jets game was just awful, but the bright spots were that Kerryon Johnson seemed like a good RB and the defense improved a lot after they got Snacks Harrison.

Yeah I wouldn't want to rely solely on him and he's 29 so you never know how much these guys have left.

What kinds of players are you hoping the Lions draft this year? And how is free agency so far?

Detroit's big signing so far has been Trey Flowers, whose young daughter apparently asked him to stay with the Patriots instead of going to the Lions. Smart girl, haha.

For the draft, OL might be the biggest area of need, then maybe CB, WR, TE, LB. Is there a particular player you're hoping the Saints will pick in the second round?

Not really our draft is pretty much a wash apart from the 2nd round pick. It depends what happens with free agency really. Our center Max Unger has just retired so we need a center and as I said we need TE, WR and maybe a pass rusher. Maybe we draft a long snapper instead though.

Meanwhile at Cowboys AT&T stadium there's a fight coming up Errol Spence vs Mikey Garcia, IBF welterweight title, both guys unbeaten, Garcia is 39-0 with 30 knockouts and Spence is 24-0 with 21 KO's.

It sounds like that ended up being a one-sided match. I haven't been following boxing much lately though, so I'm terribly out of the loop.

Yeah it was, it was disappointing after all the build up. Garcia was too small and in fact he had no advantages in this fight whatsoever. Spence was bigger, stronger, taller, longer, faster, more active and a bigger puncher. Mikey's timing and footwork are good but Spence has great timing and footwork as well. And I couldn't see what the game plan was, or what adjustments Garcia was trying to make. Watching it the game plan appeared to be stand right in front of a bigger more athletic guy and take a one-sided beatdown over and over. The only thing you could say for Mikey was he was really tough and brave and he can stand in there and take punishment from a bigger guy.

The whole card was like this actually, they should have called it Night of the Beatdowns.

Spence seems like the real deal. He's beaten some very respectable fighters.

Yeah he looks the best at 147. Terence Crawford looks like the only one at the weight who can beat him. I think Spence will fight Pacquiao or Shawn Porter next.

Talking of Crawford he's fighting April 20 against Khan. So we'll get to see Khan get knocked out cold again.

He keeps getting knocked out but he keeps these big fights. His manager must be a genius! After he gets knocked out by Crawford he'll somehow get a fight with Spence and get knocked out yet again.

It seems like he bides his time between the difficult fights (and stays somewhat relevant) by beating opponents who aren't all that good. What was his last noteworthy victory--the decision over Algieri four years ago?

Even when he's fighting the bums in between he gets rocked. This was his last fight and presumably how he "earned" the title shot at Crawford.

In terms of his best victory, to be fair to Khan, he has beaten some good fighters, Marcos Maidana, Zab Judah, Devon Alexander but these fights were at 140 and were around 2011-14. He's done nothing lately except the Algieri win.

Ha, Night of the Beatdowns.

Yeah, that really doesn't seem like it's going to go well for Khan.

Wow, he really did get hammered a bunch of times in that fight. The momentum changes so quickly in his matches. He looks like he's doing well for long stretches just because he's so fast, but as soon as the bum lands a good punch or two, he falls right down or starts running away with the bum charging after him.

Yeah I think everyone has lost count of the number of times Khan has been dropped by now. It does make his fights exciting because you never know what's going to happen, especially against the bums because he can hurt them too. Against Canelo, Danny Garcia etc and most likely in the Crawford fight Khan can't and won't be able to do any damage against them so it's just a matter of time until he gets stopped.
