TVs: OLED vs LED

I'm looking at a new, larger TV during this holiday season and almost every review I've read says that OLED televisions outperform LED ones but they also are considerably more expensive. Does anyone here have experience with an OLED? Do you think they are worth the extra $$?

We sprung for the UHD big screen a yr ago and love it but haven't tried OLED (yet, lol.) Keep an eye on Amazon, though, I think we got a really good price on the TV on cyber Monday right after Thanksgiving last year.

It depends on if you don't mind buying a new TV more often.

OLED TV's offer a better picture and use less energy, but they have a shorter lifespan. The screens are also easily damaged by water. If you hold high standards for your home entertainment, and the high $$$ isn't a problem, then OLED is a good choice.

Excellent question. My TV is falling off the entertainment center tomorrow, so I’ll need to replace it. I love my sisters-in-law’s Samsung QLED.

According to LG, the newer OLED screens are expected to last 100,000 hours. Then again, that's coming from the company that makes them, but even if they last half that time, they'd last more than 13 years if they were on 10 hours a day. Another issue that could be a problem is burn-in but I don't expect that would affect too many people.

I got hold of a Panasonic 65 inch OLED screen recently and it is tremendous....if you get an HDR enabled film the quality is outstanding....my advice would be to pair it with a soundbar, as the enhanced audio quality really finishes it .off.

Yes they are pricey, but IMO worth it

My fave TV at the moment is my kitchen TV. Still works fine.

What your tv needs is the Power Windows album cover in the back of the bottles

Great idea.

Preferably unsealed so as not to be tempted to sample the contents within.

Well, I jumped in with both feet. We had a 42", 720p Toshiba and now we have a 65", 4K, LG of the OLED variety. I'd checked all the websites that listed prices and had planned to go to Costco because they double the warranty and their price was $50ish less than other places, however (and there's always a however)

There is a localish store (16 only on the west coast) that doesn't list prices on their site so you have to go to the store to check prices and what they carry. Their commercials say if you don't shop at Video Only, "you'll be sooory".

I decided to check them out and the listed price is within a few $ of every other place but they offer $$ off for a "trade in". The thing is, you don't actually have to trade in a TV to get the deal because they just use any old TV that people bring in to recycle and knock money off. In my case, it was $400 off and Oregon has no sales tax so it worked out pretty well.

And let me tell ya, going from 42" to 65" is quite a change.

I moved up from a 46" to a 65" . Had to move the furniture back a bit ....

I remodeled my basement last year, and before I started, I took some nails and string and made a 46" TV outline on the main wall, to get an idea of how it would look. It looked small. I outlined a 55" TV, and it looked good, but out of curiosity, I made a 65" outline. It looked really good.

65" Sony 4K looks great! I use it primarily for movies and sports, so it's perfect. :haz:

I have a top of the line Panasonic Plasma from 6 years ago, and I find that the low end LEDs look considerably worse.

OLEDs, on the other hand, offer a distinct, but not huge, improvement.

I had a QLED for a while...it was much better than the LEDs, not as good as the OLED (but closer to OLED than LED), and about the same as my Plasma (some things obviously better, some obviously worse).

I broke down and ordered a

Samsung 65” QLED 4K UHD 6 Series. I hope it impresses me.

Did you get a good price?

I think so. I waited and watched till it dropped from $1,599 to $1,236.

Just like the article I read. Prices dropped for Christmas then went back up. Dropped again for Super Bowl shoppers then back up just before the game. Then down again after the SB because soon the new 2019 models will be coming out.

Still holding out for OLED myself. 4k LED doesn't seem like quite enough to justify dumping a perfectly functional 1080p television.

I watch a lot of HiDef videos of sexy young people driving Miatas topless. So I felt necessary to upgrade.

Nothing like driving around with the top down, feeling the wind in your hair.

The picture is so different. I feel I need to immerse my self into understanding the various picture settings and when to adjust them. Last night I watched an episode of Battlestar Galactica '78. The series was remastered for BluRay. The space scenes with models and FX look great. The scenes with people on set looked almost live, like video tape, soap opera like. Set pieces are seen in detail unknown to me before, "oh my that is made out of wood"?

I found I had to adjust each input individually. The first time I watched a DVD it was crazy bright and ultra colorful. I like the "cinema" type settings for low eye strain and longer pixel life.
