I thought the thread title said "greatest" not half assed effort.

Any album with that title track on it has a claim, and besides, I'm trying to hit 120 albums.

The title track just sounds like a DJ mashup of bits and pieces of much better songs by other bands. There is nothing special about it at all beyond their fantastic playing.

But with DT, playing amazingly well is nothing out of the ordinary. I would take one song off Scenes over the entirety of Octavariums title track.

And I know others who would disagree with you on that. It's a very well composed piece, and the climax at the end is easily one of the highlights of their discography. At least in my opinion. But hey, who cares what makes it on the nomination list? If you don't agree with it, don't vote for it.

Have you heard all of Dream Theater's catalog? Octavarium is a very good song but nothing about it is a highlight of their career. Root Of All Evil, These Walls and Panic Attack are also quite good but the rest of the album is as forgettable and ordinary as anything they've ever recorded. Not even close to the same league as Images, Awake, Scenes and Six Degrees. Dramatic Turn and the self titled are miles better too.

I have listened to Images, Awake, 6DoIT, and ADTOE many many times. I love them. I love the title to Octavarium as well. I'd call it a career highlight any day of the week.

We just got it finally, and I've heard it now a couple times, but I haven't given it a thorough listen yet. I've had a gotten a lot of new music in the past couple weeks and I've been having some trouble finding a good time of day to just sit down and listen to it all.

70. Frost* - Milliontown

Jem Godfrey's neo-prog masterpiece is one of my five desert island albums. It builds up from the teriffic piano driven instrumental opener, "Hyperventilate"; before ending with the dual prog epics of "Black Light Machine" and the title track "Milliontown". Everything on this album is just about perfect.

75. Queen -- A Night at the Opera

It's as prog as some of the albums on this list, I guess. Regardless, a top twenty of any/all for me. A favorite when I was young; still an album I go to.

True story, I met Dr. Brian May this last Jan 3rd. He has been on the New Horizons science team since the flyby of Pluto and was visiting my place of work (JHUAPL) to support the Ultima Thule flyby. I told him my favorite Queen song is '39; he seemed to appreciate that. Most here probably know that was written and sung by May. What many might not realize is that it is about space travel and time dilation (easily missed if you're not paying attention). The ship leaves in '39 and returns 100 hundred years later, though only a year has passed for the "volunteers". Just think the combination of rock and science-y nerdiness is very cool. Great writing...

In the year of '39 came a ship in from the blue

The volunteers came home that day

And they bring good news of a world so newly born

Though their hearts so heavily weigh

For the earth is old and grey, little darling, we'll away

But my love this cannot be

For so many years have gone though I'm older but a year

Your mother's eyes, from your eyes, cry to me.

Trying to draw my attention back I see.

I wasn’t brave enough to post this one, on account I might get lambasted for just posting Queen despite the significant prog element to it. You have my vote.

Yeah,

The Beatles, not prog.

Supertramp, not prog.

Queen, not prog.

All great, none prog.

I think perhaps Roxy Music might have a better claim

A Day In The Life

Fool's Overture

The Prophet's Song

Prog related at the very least.

A step in that direction certainly. But still way too much pop involved which is what they did after all. Prog related? Sure, you bet. As close as they could get. Compare to Cygnus X 1 and get back to me.

Have you heard their debut? They started pretty proggy.

They started very different and unique to be sure and remained that way. They are one of my all time favorite sing along bands. One of a kind despite being assembled by a corporate manager.

YYZ is prog. What did ST do comparable?

Idk man. Prog is prog. The Prophet’s Song and Fool’s Overture are certainly weird and long and complex enough for the label, and A Day In The Life popularized smashing multiple sections of songs together in a pop-rock song, something every prog band has taken as inspiration for their own multi sectioned pieces.

But here's a Supertramp track that compares to Floyd's post-Syd Barrett stuff, dark Side and beyond.
