I love it, man! But smoke a little of a ...ahem...left handed cigarette and crank "Stranglehold" on a good system. It doesn't BLOW your mind as much as mesmerizes it! But then again, "Family Guy" does that to me, so what do I know?

La Villa is a classic of what a solo should be,for any instrument for that matter.Starts off slowly and builds to a crescendo, much like Stairway and Bohemien Rhapsody and falls away just at the end.Even something as straight ahead and much less complex as You Shook Me All Night Long follows the same pattern. But Alex's choice of notes here is the key over a mostly two chord vamp something which John Petrucci borrowed heavily on the DT track Breaking All Illusions(a great solo).I remember buying Van Halens debut and Hemispheres at the same time back in the day and although EVH blew my socks off(there was nothing else like it then kids) i was more blown away by La Villa and Floyds Comfortably Numb.

Technically it is not as complex as say a Satch or Vai or Van Halen ect ect . But as I said time and time again that was not Al's bag , He was never going to be a fretboard tour de force. But he makes up for it in feeling and musical composition. In fact I would dare to say that players like Petrucci ect can learn a lot by remembering that. My eyes have never glazed over 10 seconds into a Lifeson solo. But even with the best of those wanker guitarist I get impatient and waiting for the finger gymnastics to end. VH is the same to me, he never bores me . Even though he can be accused of playing like that also. I play guitar myself and it is not jealousy on my part. I just can't get into those type players. If it can't keep my interest I am not going to want to listen to it more then once. Or try to emulate it. Anther good example of this is Elliot Easton's solos . I know a lot of people would tell me if I knew how to play like that it would interest me more. But I argue if I need to do that to like it , It is probably not that good to begin with. And La Villa is a perfect example of his fantastic style. I love it and would rank it up there with the greats because he is one , Edited by patjnev

I'm curious to know how you guys and gals stack Lerxst's solo in LVS up against the best guitar solos of other guitarists you like. I like a lot of other guitarists (EVH, Petrucci, Satriani, Rhodes, Lynch, Bettencourt, Aldrich, Beach, Bonamassa, Di Meola, Lukather, Buckethead, Govan... just to name a handful).

In my opinion, Alex's LVS solo is the best, most creative, unique, soulful and dynamic solo out there.

The solo for LVS is awesome, within the Rush canon. I would place Limelight as his best, or The Necromancer, Working Man, Cut to the Chase, Analog Kid... or ......{insert favorite solo} ? (to name a few, today)...

From your list though, Buckethead can play circles around all of them combined, even though he gets no attention whatsoever... ;)

Buckethead can play circles around Van Halen? Rhoads?

No he can't. He doesn't play circles around Slash for that matter.

you're right...I forgot to add Mustaine to the circle with Slash... :P

(On Buckethead)

Mustaine: He's brilliant; I love him. But then you see some guy like BucketheadBuckethead is probably twice as good a guitar player as me and Slash combined,

Mega-Dave is not the source I would choose to establish who qualifies as an excellent guitarist. Or sanity for that matter. :guitar: :P

Don't forget Michael Schenker's masterpiece solo on "Rock Bottom." Yes Alex's solo is up there. Give me his solo on "Between The Wheels" too.
