I know people here really dig ADTOE and the self-titled but I just don't hear a lot of staying power in any of the post-portnoy stuff

Speak for yourself.

the last portnoy Domenated albums (and that's what they were dominated) pretty much blew, IMO.

The self titled to me was brilliance. in my top 5.

Now the last one sucked. but i'm willing for one more go.

album will suck but I'll try and see them in april if they're doing SFAM

It' weird that they're doing SFAM now, since in 2013/2014 they also celebrated 15 years of the same album, and played a huge chunk of it, on the "self-titled" tour. But whatever...I never got the chance to see Scenes in full when it came out, so count me in. They'll be in Toronto on April 4th, and I'll be there. Someone in the inner circle of the band said in their forum that the setlist will not be a rehash of what they did on the SFAM tour, so I'm curious.

DT is one of those bands that I love, but also agree with a lot of the criticism towards them. The only time my interest level was so low that I missed the tour was when The Astonishing came out. I saw the Images, Words and Beyond last year, and while the setlist was great and the guys seemed energized on stage, I couldn't help but feel that they did this due to how unpopular The Astonishing was - it seemed they needed to cut their losses and do a tour that was more appealing then. Either way, it was a good chance to catch certain rare tracks live, some of which will NEVER be played ever again. These guys are like my superheroes - MP, Kevin Moore and Derek Sherinian included, and I support them to the extent that I can.

And MP'S doing some great things with Neal Morse IMO.

so he's in a good spot, IMO.

Album cover looks pretentious and edgy.

Therefore the album will be bad.

Don't forget that the same Hugh Syme did the cover of Clockwork Angels, which was horrible, but the booklet was amazing. The same can be said about DT's self titled album: laaaaaazy cover, great booklet.

I don't know what it is, but lately, Hugh Syme is very hit and miss.

I don't think all of CA's artwork was fantastic. Some was a little lazy.

I don't mind the album cover. I was expecting some major turd with what some of you were saying. It's probably one of their least pretentious covers. Either way, I'm not tremendously excited about new DT music, but I'll check it out anyway. It honestly can't be worse than their last album.

Its a very direct image and it looks very clean, which creates a certain feel that I am curious to hear the album for. I can really enjoy DT. I will never be a big fan (at least I can't see it happening), but the last album aside, they have been moderately consistent with my tastes.

It's a Dream Theatre album, therefore it will be shite......

Oh very likely...But maybe this album will restore them to a steadier level!

You got into them before they released The Astonishing. You really couldn't have picked a worse time to discover them. I've been a huge fan since Images and Words and The Astonishing killed about 90 percent of my enthusiasm for the band. That's how bad that whole endeavor was for me.

DT were possibly eyeing my top 5 artists of all time before TA came out. Somehow I never properly istenss to the whole thing, and I enjoyed what I did hear of it quite a bit (at least half, which is a lot), but all the negativity towards it here managed to turn me off of DT in general a bit. Enough to let Genesis and Bowie round out my top 5 instead. Over the past year or so I’ve gotten back into them a bit with Awake and Octavarium, so here’s hoping Distance Over Time will get me to check out the rest of their discography!

Oh gosh I think this is what happened to me, very early in my DT experience. Maybe if I do decide to do a marathon in future, we could make it a small group conversation and revisit them together! Me, you, EP and Mick!

If I can find the time I’d be down. So much I haven’t heard from them (looking at you Scenes).

I think Priest, Sabbath and Queen are more enticing to be honest. (I may mix the marathons up and do each band chronologically but with well thought out breaks in between. Like Rush, do the marathons in batches and swap between bands to keep it fresh).

Plenty of Priest and Sabbath I haven’t heard either. Vol. 4, Technical Ecstasy, Never Say Die, Point Of Entry, Defenders Of The Faith, Turbo, Painkiller...

They had ONE dud after two highly acclaimed releases (for me, three).

I am open to a new release. As I said already, the snippet is better than anything I remember off the astonishing (maybe it is time to try that one again...).

I'm not a massive DT fan but I will always be open to new releases.

I'm fully ready for my enthusiasm to be renewed. If they can have something like Dramatic Turn or the self titled I'll be very happy. I don't think the band lost it they just made a huge misstep on the last album and tour to support it.
