I like the album cover a lot. Classy, even elegant, but with a really intriguing juxtaposition and an in exact idea Of Symmetry. It looks like the robot is reciting Hamlet!

Sample sounds good, nothing mindblowing, but solid DT riffage. Also like the title, which could be simplified as either Speed or Velocity.

I hate song teasers. We know the track is finished just give us the whole damn thing lol.

They must really be struggling with concert attendance to bust out another anniversary themed show after already doing one last year.

Maybe or just smart choice? I think they have been slowly trending downward since mp was booted/resigned. Or at least when this former fanboi checked out.

Folks love sfam so it makes sense. You have to wonder how much momentum they lost with the astonishing.

Like others said, that cover is awesome. I guess thats still hugh syme?

Honestly the cover is what it is. I like it but it feels a bit like a cheap YA sci-fi book cover.

HOWEVER!

I was digging that groove in the teaser and can honestly say that 36 second clip was better than the entirety of The Astonishing. I f***ing hate that album.

I enjoyed the three albums before that one a lot. I am ready to open myself up to another Dream Theater album.

I do have such a weird relationship with this band though...the oddest I have ever had with any band!

your relationship with DT frustrates me more than it does you, lol. like WAY more.

on paper they should be a straight Segue band, lol

What I really feel annoyed about is that every now and then I spin an album and I just LOVE IT! Like Sonata Arctica level love. And it's the BEST ALBUM I HAVE HEARD ALL DAY!

Then I play it again with wild anticipation and...the same record...I hate it.

I try another album...I hate that sound. Then I get an urge to listen to a band that album reminded me of and more often than not I become obsessed with them instead.

I can't seem to really click with the band and their identity. I can't really tell you why. You know my music doesn't have to be ground-breaking to be enjoyable. But the level of skill DT has is undeniable but there is something so ridiculously ugly about them, and I can't tell you why.

But then I get that random desire to spin some DT and for a short while it is PRECIOUS.

Go figure.

I will say though that I tend to never have any issue with Falling Into Infinity, Train Of Thought or Black Clouds And Silver Linings.

I know people here really dig ADTOE and the self-titled but I just don't hear a lot of staying power in any of the post-portnoy stuff

There's not much staying power with about half the stuff on their last couple of releases with Portnoy either. I think a change did need to be made in the band and Portnoy leaving was really the only one to be made. The band needed a shake up and they couldn't have had a bigger one happen.

album will suck but I'll try and see them in april if they're doing SFAM

It' weird that they're doing SFAM now, since in 2013/2014 they also celebrated 15 years of the same album, and played a huge chunk of it, on the "self-titled" tour. But whatever...I never got the chance to see Scenes in full when it came out, so count me in. They'll be in Toronto on April 4th, and I'll be there. Someone in the inner circle of the band said in their forum that the setlist will not be a rehash of what they did on the SFAM tour, so I'm curious.

DT is one of those bands that I love, but also agree with a lot of the criticism towards them. The only time my interest level was so low that I missed the tour was when The Astonishing came out. I saw the Images, Words and Beyond last year, and while the setlist was great and the guys seemed energized on stage, I couldn't help but feel that they did this due to how unpopular The Astonishing was - it seemed they needed to cut their losses and do a tour that was more appealing then. Either way, it was a good chance to catch certain rare tracks live, some of which will NEVER be played ever again. These guys are like my superheroes - MP, Kevin Moore and Derek Sherinian included, and I support them to the extent that I can.
