Arcades back in the 80's were awesome. I feel bad that the kids of the mid 90's and onward will never have that experience. I was at the movies with my son the other day and walked into the theater's arcade. It was just pathetic. Most games were between $1 and $2 to play and the game usually only lasted 45 seconds or so. Not to mention they were all racing/driving or first-person shooter games. And the rest of the games were all those crane games.

There's a place north of me in Delray Beach called the Silverball Museum with pinball machines and arcade games you can play by the hour, half day, or all day.

Arcade games (24) include Defender, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Millipede, Missle Command, Frogger, Karate Champ, Pole Position 2, Robotron, Sinistar, Space Invaders, Space Invaders 2, and of course, Pac Man & Ms Pac Man.

Pinball machines (88) include Army Navy, Black Hole, Central Park, Captain Fantastic, Charlie's Angels, Gorgar, Indiana Jones, Kiss, Nugent, Playboy, Stargate, Tommy, World Cup, and others.

It also serves food and drink, including burgers, pizza , sandwiches, and beer wine and hard liqour.

Sounds worth checking out!

If there was ever a better game to spend endless amounts of quarters on just to beat a high score, it's Galaga. You know I'm right.

Thing is with Galaga could never get past a certain point, frustrating, always played it when possible though.

I was never very good at video games but Galaga was my favorite but Tempest was a very close second.

There are so many arcades still doing great biz in the US from what I've seen, so sweet...no chance around these parts, sad.

And a revival in the form of what's called a barcade, a combination of sports bar and arcade, along the lines of places like Dave & Busters. Although some of them are basically bars with a bunch of PlayStation or Xbox machines, which I never liked. I'm more the classic pinball arcade game type.

I used to go to the D&B in Hollywood, but stopped about five years ago when the pricks started a cover charge for admission to the bar area on nights they were broadcasting boxing and UFC Ppv's.

Oh for sure, pinball machines are so hypnotic, electronic works of art! :smoke:

Update: Checked out Silverball yesterday as part of a birthday excursion. The building is surrounded by a 9 hour free parking lot used by folks working in downtown Delray Beach, so I walked the short block to a pay lot to park. Once in, the front desk takes your fee and attaches a wristband. I opted for the daytime half day, which covers from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The games are spread out over two floors, the upper floors set up into two lounges, one called The Boat Bar as the bar is actually the stern of an old Chris Craft, railings teak deck and all.

Once your on the game floor, you're on your own. The games are push button automatic reset, so you're to ready player one in no time. Of course I had to walk around for a couple of minutes deciding which to try first, which ended up as Fireball, a Williams classic from the 80's. A little pinball, a little Centpede, a little more pinball, a little Robotron 2084. Then a quick beer break and back to pinball.

Only beef was there was no Tempest! What's a disaffected youth from the subdivisions gonna do? One of the folks running the desk says they've had a lot of requests for it, but they're tough to find, and very high maintenance.

Spent 4 hours in a state of bliss before finally heading home. Well worth the travel time and cost!

Can someone be greedy and keep hitting reset on the game of their choice?

I wouldn't doubt it, like the motorcycle game hog in the Progressive Insurance commercial. But if someone complained, I would think management would ask the person nicely to move to a different game. Jeez, I remember that from my days when I would leave work and spend 2-3 hours pumping quarters into machines.

Loved that game for the same reason of playing with 3 pals. Only problem was that it took too many tokens too fast no matter how good you were or how much food you found.

Some of my favorites growing up were Scrambler, and its sequel Super Cobra. Moon Patrol, Xevious, Venture, Elevator Action, Star Wars, and the Donkey Kong knockoffs where the barrels wouldn't roll down your ladder if you were right at the top bbn of it.

Congo Bongo

Crazy Climber

Berserk

Frenzy

Time Pilot

Good gosh I could go on all day. I had a paper route and would "raid the bag" for money from customers who paid early. I can still remember songs that were playing in the background.

It seemed like I was spending a lot of money at the time, but it was probably about 5 or 6 bucks a week.

I loved Crystal Castles in college, that was the one with the little beaf who had to rescue the Princess and there were pots of honey and Bee swarms and trees that would chase after him.

Fond memories of the Atari Star Wars sit down arcade game. The cabinet and cockpit looked amazing back then and still do. I wonder what they sell for now.

I don’t know if that’s a normal price or not but it seems steep to me.

720 is still fantastic, and the soundtrack rocks :haz: . Regularly play it.

Used to like that game a lot. A similar game, and probably from the same makers, that I liked even more was Paperboy. Or some name like that.

Yeah Paperboy made by Atari too. 720 had amazing graphics for 1986. I had a real paper round, and it wasn't half as fun

I've been waiting for years to get my wife a Ms. Pacman arcade machine but they were way too expensive for one game. She only likes to play it with the joystick so no luck on xbox. But this year 1up released the cocktail table version with eight games. Full size like the one I used to play at the restaurant/bar down the street in the eighties. She has no idea it's even out so I hope I can really surprise her. I like that we can still have fun acting like teenagers again and relive some fond memories together. Also love that my son gets to see adults can have a playful fun side and not have to be serious 24/7. Life's about having fun and this past year hasn't been with everything going on in the world....
