I hate to say this

I'm concerned ... I'm there right when it is released, but this trailer just sent my boner into the dirt

.. the good news is that it's been in worse places

.

dirt?!! Shouldn't it be hitting the clouds?

That trailer is better than I expected. On paper I didn't think it'd be much but I can watch this.

Oh shit. Really? Do you think it's a total nostalgic redundant ride cash grab.

Don't you mean "DICK IN THE DIRT?"

Love,

Sammy Hagar

It's hard to say from just the trailer

Movie don;t have to make sense for me to enjoy them, but walking up to Michael and showing him the mask like that struck me as dumb ... I don;t like it when the villain has been transformed into some type of superhero ...

There's something to be said for subtlety in horror ..

It kills it ( ? ) for me when we as viewers are bashed over the head with turning the villains into celebrities

Nothing like a cloud breaker !!

But that trailer wasn;t one of 'em

I'll definitely seek Halloween out - and it just a minute and a half trailer - but I just wasn't feeling the vibe

I'm admittedly gunshy with JC .. There's still dirt on me from Escape From LA and Ghosts Of Mars !!

Watching that trailer this film seems like a film for dirty old men who still get turned on by Jamie Lee Curtis' old ass!

From USA Today:

In the first film — the actress' Hollywood debut — “she was running for her life,” says Curtis, 59. “In this case, she is well-matched, she is prepared, she is focused. She will be the one people are standing behind when that moment comes, because she’s the one ready.”

.. and herein lies a problem:

We're taking a independent, basically DIY late 1970s slasher film and transforming it into something more like a professional wrestling match where both characters have become celebrities .. with a dreadful, modern PC message

I hate this .. I love the original .... as I love the original Friday The 13th, another great film whose legacy has been polluted with unwatchable sequels ... But the essence of what made these films great has been sucked out and replaced with contrived, modern nonsense

Thinking Curtis administers a DDT on the porch then finishes off Mikey with a splash from the roof!

I am a Halloween movie addict. The original is untouchable. We all know that. I am disappointed that Halloween II is being dismissed for this sequel. To me Halloween and Halloween II are one film taking place on the same night.

But.....that is the way Carpenter and Blumhouse wanted to go. I am willing to enjoy this brand new sequel with a completely different path.

I was able to dismiss Return, Revenge and Curse to watch H2O. And I of course totally dismissed the abortion that was Resurrection.

I thought the trailer was good. No doubt I am seeing this opening weekend.

Hoping for the best.

Right. I don’t see the problem with part 2 either. I enjoyed it quite a bit even though it can’t touch the original. It doesn’t have to though.

A great interview with John Carpenter, circa 2014

What he says here seems to fly in the face and contradict just about everything about the new Halloween ..

I think the first part of the answer he gives to this question is right on the mark

DEADLINE: How do you take it when Hollywood keeps milking your career by recycling movies like Halloween, Assault On Precinct 13, and The Thing, and why didn’t you direct any of the Halloween sequels yourself?

CARPENTER: I didn’t think there was any more story, and I didn’t want to do it again. All of my ideas were for the first Halloween – there shouldn’t have been any more! I’m flattered by the fact that people want to remake them, but they remake everything these days, so it doesn’t make me that special. But Michael Myers was an absence of character. And yet all the sequels are trying to explain that. That’s silliness – it just misses the whole point of the first movie, to me. He’s part person, part supernatural force. The sequels rooted around in motivation. I thought that was a mistake. However, I couldn’t stop them from making sequels. So my agents said, ‘Why don’t you become an executive producer and you can share the revenue?’ But I had to write the second movie, and every night I sat there and wrote with a six pack of beer trying to get through this thing. And I didn’t do a very good job, but that was it. I couldn’t do any more.

Bob Clark made a ( great ) movie in 1974 called Black Christmas .. It featured shots from the killer's point of view ( later, in 1975-1976, the Steadicam was put into use to get this effect for tracking shots ) and was about a faceless stalker that offed people during the Christmas holiday ..

In an interview with Clark, he had this to say:

WARNING: BLACK CHRISTMAS SPOILERS AHEAD

Were there ever plans for a sequel to Black Christmas ?

Clark: No, I never intended to do a sequel. I did a film about three years later - started a film with John Carpenter - it was his first film for Warner Bros. .. He asked me if I was ever going to do a sequel to Black Christmas, and I said no. I was through with horror, and I didn't come into the business to do just horror. He said "What would you do if you did do a sequel ?" ... I said it would be the next year, and the guy would have actually been caught, escape from the mental institution, and go back to the house and start all over again .. I would would call it "Halloween" ( laughs )

Sound familiar ??

In fairness to Carpenter, Clark said he doesn't feel that JC stole the idea ( god bless him with that one )

The killer in Black Christmas was never revealed .. He was the ultimate "faceless" killer .....

When movie after movie is made featuring and iconizing ( ? ) a character whose most important and effective trait is absence of character, it's going to kill the vibe ...

I hope JC is OK health-wise .. He's spoke of some serious eye trouble and chain smoking ..... but his track record over the past 30 years is littered with really really bad movies

... and it just dawned on me that it's kind of ironic that the interviewer here brings up sequels, and Carpenter mentions how Hollywood is "remaking everything these days" and John's 1982 The Thing was, in fact, a remake ..

Black Christmas is better than Halloween.

As iconic as Halloween has become - and maybe, that might be part of the reason for its impact being lost on me - I will agree with you Segue

Black Christmas has a great vibe, and I would put it ahead on my list

Both are fantastic genre films ... I think there needs to be a marathon in the next few days

We could do a thread where we watch films in a certain order then get back too each other! I loved old horror movies growing up but you guys mention many classics I have never heard of!

But I have always loved Black Christmas. I never realised it came out BEFORE Halloween. I honestly thought it was a remarkable horror inspired by it!

But yeah...

I have never finished Salems Lot or even seen a single Friday 13th.

I saw Suspiria years ago but it remains forgotten in my mind.
