I just watched a great video last night analyzing all the best things about one of my favorite songs, "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel, and it reminded me how much I love Gabriel, his work inside and outside of Genesis is equally awesome. So... here's a thread for him!

We may as well start with a question, what's your favorite Peter Gabriel solo album. Rank them if you can, and vote for your favorite above!

Funny thing me is i think Gabriel solo is WAY better than his time in Genesis. at least his first 4 records.

I love Security most. The first time i played it it freaked me out. it was like. should i call for help? lol

After security he looses me a bit. was never as big on So like most.

As far as Genesis. Foxtrot all day. Supper's Ready remains my fav prog epic.

We chose 'in your eyes' for the bride and groom dance at my first wedding reception. Followed by 'it's the end of the world' by rem.

It was all downhill after that. but i don't blame gabriel.

Timely thread for me, since I just played So the other day (and Car this afternoon) and had decided then that I'm ripe for a Gabriel phase.

I couldn't get into Car, Scratch, or Melt back in my teens, but I was all gaga about Security from day one when Older Brother brought it home in '82 and set that needle to the vinyl. The opening track, "The Rhythm of the Heat," remains my fave solo Gabriel tune to this day. Such a powerful track!

Nowadays, I'd rank 'em as such:

Security

Melt

Car

Scratch

I don't know what to do with So, however. It's so much poppier and less experimental than the First Four -- not that that's necessarily a bad thing -- and it's marred by a couple of tracks I don't care for, like "Sledgehammer." But Lovely Wife and I played it nonstop while traipsing around the Czech Republic, so spinning it evokes some strong, positive nostalgia for me. I have to be in a certain mood for it.

As for Genesis, put me down for A Trick of the Tail. Oh ... wait. Selling England for me, please. But tomorrow it might be Foxtrot.

Peter had a hot streak with his first six albums. Honestly I know of no other artist that has been able to reach that type of creative peak and hit a consistent level of song writing, lyrics, and production. It's hard for me to rank his solo stuff, as I enjoy almost all of it, but if I were to rank them at the moment...

Melt

Security

So

Scratch

Car

As far as Genesis, Trespass through The Lamb is gold. Picking a favorite out of that lot is hard, but my ranking:

Selling England

Foxtrot

The Lamb

Nursery Cryme

Trespass

That's my Main gripe with So. not a bad album. a commercial success but way to tame and less exciting after those first 4. and because of that. following records never recaptured the sspark of those four.

He tried hard with Up.....but that has splotches of brilliance. you had to muddle through a lot of nothing to get em, IMO.

Gabriel and Bowie are artists I should love to death but have never been able to get into.

That said, I've owned So and Up. Both contained some good songs, but as I said I've long since moved on to other bands and don't revisit. I can see where the 'hype' is though, it's good music and I can detach from my personal bias well enough to hear that. I used to feel the same about Steely Dan (long time ago). Tastes change, and so might mine.

I wish Gabriel and Bowie had worked together. That would've been spectacular.

Depending on when you caught Bowie, it could have been. A collaboration by the "Let's Dance" David Bowie and "Melt" Peter Gabriel would blow heads sky high.

Have to mention his amazing score for Last Temptation Of Christ. That's my new movie to watch on Easter these past couple of years since Showtime had it on streaming. Saw it on some Starz Encore channel for the first time many years ago and it holds up as Scorsese's best and most underrated next to King Of Comedy. Siskel even called it the best of 1988 and he's so on point about what made it great.

Fitting since Bowie had a good cameo as Pontius Pilate in that aforementioned film.

Peter was a monster for those first 4 records. it's like he left Genesis with something to prove. he may not have been a smash commercial success pre-So. but the music on those 4.......holy shit is it awesome.

Here's an observation.

Both Peter Gabriel and Shania Twain released albums in 2002, in which both were titled Up.

The difference is Twain's album has an exclamation point at the end.

On a side note.

Man you just know everything! Here's a question. Is there any relationship between Peter Gabriel and Carlos Santana?

Peter Gabriel did cover 'Heroes' from his Scratch My Back covers album.

There's a fake cover that makes it sound like David Bowie is singing 'Games Without Frontiers' on YouTube, but it isn't legitimate as noted here.
