My interview with Jeff Scott Soto

Recommended Posts

I had a chat on the phone with Jeff Scott Soto about a bunch of different topics, but mostly focused on the upcoming tour with Sons of Apollo. I hope you like it: http://www.sonicperspectives.com/interviews/interview-with-jeff-scott-soto/

As always, feedback is welcome about the way the interview was conducted. And hey, Mike Portnoy retweeted the link to the interview!!!

Congrats, that's so cool!

I think I may have written here before, I had an almost meet up with Jeff Scott Soto at a party. We lived in Colorado for awhile in the 80s and he did too. A coworker was having a going away party for "her friend Jeff" . He was leaving to join some unknown (to us  ) named Yngwie Malmsteen on tour. It was a really busy week so I skipped it. I heard it was a good party- I think Jeff has never slowed down since then!

Off to listen to your interview!

I didn´t know that, blueschica!!!

Jeff was so cool! That interview was one of the easiest ones, because I know his body of work.

Yes, I just finished listening to the interview- he seemed really comfortable with you. I liked your question about the Queen and Van Halen material; that was interesting! Great interview!

Rod, as always, great job

You have a very natural way of making the people you are interviewing feel at ease and comfortable - that has a lot to do with your sincere personality, but also, you obviously know your stuff as far as the music goes ..

When a musician realizes that the interviewer is not just reading off the same, predicable questions - and that they are actually a fan of not just their music, but music in general - I think they feel much more at home and comfortable ... And you do to perfection

Jeff sounds like a great guy to talk to - he fully admits he isn't a Dream Theater fan, which was refreshing to hear because he was just being honest ..

Jeff, for me, cemented his place in music history because of

I am a VIKING

Love those two Yngwie albums

A+

You took time off from listening to Priest to post this... I take it as the best compliment I could receive from you, mate!!!

Next mission: an interview with the singer from Little Caesar. Remember them? A straight ahead rock and roll band which succumbed to grunge. I think Segue would like them.

I'm actually listening to Necrophobic now, a black metal onslaught! Interestingly though the heavy guitars on this are not as heavy as the heavy guitars on FIREPOWER!

Amazing how Jeff sang I Am a Viking so well, even without having nothing to do with the Nordic culture. Is there anything more ill-fitting than a Latino proudly singing about battleships and swords????

Those first two Yngwie albums were 2 of the first CDs I bought - everything to that point had been LP, 8 track or cassette ... I still have those original CDs, but being a guitarist, I had to buy the LPs back then too in order to be able to slow them down to try to figure out what the heck Yngwie was doing ..

The big console stereo in the house had a turntable with all four speeds : 16 2/3 being the slowest .. I would put Far Beyond On Sun on at 16 2/3 and it would still sound too fast

I got the Necrophobic, and could have interviewed them a while ago...but it sounds like the same song played 10 times in a row.

Not in my head Rod, in my head things are better, the melody detector is stronger in me. You need to go to the mental melody gym! Work out!

As usual a top notch first class interview. I love Soto on "Rising Force." My favorite work from his. I've tried to fall in love with Soto's solo work but no. Can't do it. I even saw Soto in Journey which was good but nothing special.

This new supergroup record though is tops. Soto is a really nice dude. Great interview. I actually burped at the exact time when Soto mentioned "burping." Funny.

Well done Rod!
