You've made me reboot this thread Johnny! How arrogant of you! :P

CA blows debut out of the water. The guys may not have their youth and novelty on their side, but they do have and reinvigorated Neil (as lyricist and as drummer), the best most creative music they'd written in years (and I mean years and years), and an entertaining concept to boot (plus someone said there was a lack of solos, you have this confused with VT, many killer solos are to be found buried in the bad production). Yeah, the production is kinda blah, but everything else is top shelf Rush. Like 4 songs on the debut match or the majority of this material, and only like two of those surpass much of anything here.

What do you think is the closest album, in terms of year of release, that beats Angels? I assume it’s not Snakes or Vapor Trails.

P.S. I mind-controlled you to bump this thread!...or, at least, that’s what Steve Smith would’ve said. I’m deranged with telepathic powers if you didn’t already know.

Signed,

Doctor Brainwash

The last album that comes close going backwards was Power Windows, and the last one that definitely beats CA going backwards is Signals.

Classic. And you cannot brainwash me to think otherwise! :P

For me, Angels is probably the album with the biggest difference between its best and worst stuff. The two best being The Anarchist and Headlong Flight, both highly enjoyable songs. The two worst, Wish Them Well and Halo Effect, are boring at best. When Angels is good it’s excellent, but when it’s bad it’s terrible imho. That album is all over the place like that for me.

I brainwashed you into giving your honest opinion. Additionally, I brainwashed you into thinking I cannot brainwash you. :P

This tomfoolery brainwashing has got to stop! I refuse to believe Earl is my dad!

As I was like 13 when I first heard it, I really enjoyed Halo Effect. Definitely pulled my young, gullible heartstrings. Wish Them Well and BU2B2 are the only real clunkers on there for me. Even back then I could tell there was a significant drop in quality on those two tracks. I agree Anarchist and Headlong are among it's obvious frontrunners, but I also put the title track, The Garden, and Caravan up there, with a solid B to A range of tracks consisting of BU2B, Carnies, SSOG, and of course The Wreckers (have I missed any? it is a little long too...).

I forgot about BU2B2 actually. But it would complete my trifecta of badness from CA. The other two being, as I said, Wish Them Well & Halo Effect.

The trifecta of goodness would be the aforementioned The Anarchist & Headlong Flight plus Clockwork Angels.

Everything else would be decent, passable, or forgettable. But even within some of those songs I feel pieces are really cool and other snippets are static.

Oh, when I was 13 the new album was Power Windows. And I liked it immediately. I still like it a lot. And yeah, I’d say it’s definitely better than Angels.

Earl has mentioned many times before that his son is his pug, Earl IV. I’m just going to leave that there alongside your earlier dad comment. :hail:

Not a fan of either album. But CA is more acceptable to me, I just can't stand their debut, it's not real Rush. On CA it was toss-up between the title track and The Garden, I went with a title track.

More than one year ago I've said this. But during the last year I listened CA a couple of times and carefully paid attention to material on the album and now it's in my top 10 Rush albums. I am a fan of that album, but not a BIG fan. Headlong Flight is probably among my 20 fave Rush tunes.

Rush's S/T debut doesn't interest me at all and I don't rate that album. I've listened it only once and I haven't had a wish to listen it once again, the sound of that album is not what I expect from a band called Rush. Objectively it's not a bad album, Alex has showed us some good guitar chops for sure but to me "Rush" is totally irrelevant and forgettable, it's just not worth my attention at all.

Not sure how it’s “irrelevant” as it was necessary to go from there to Fly By Night. It’d be like skipping infancy once out of your mother’s womb and going straight to being a toddler. Gotta learn to crawl before you walk...or, fly by night :P
