Finding My Way is an A+, so full of cock rock testosterone enthusiasm that it never fails to make me want to any number of a thousand fun things ... It is inspiring and full of life - the band, esp Geddy and his voice were not to be stopped

The Garden just blah .. cornball and dour - I don't like throwing in the towel, ever

Though I wouldn’t associate The Garden with “throwing in the towel”, I do think much of it is corny these days. I liked it quite a bit more when it was new but it’s not an utter failure in my eyes.

Grade: C

Finding My Way easily gets my vote here. It’s not perfect but it’s a fun song that I’ve always liked.

Grade: A-

I suspect that picking Finding My Way will make the participant seem (and perhaps feel) young, ballsy and full of vigor; picking The Garden, on the other hand, will make the participant seem old, sentimental, and possibly flatulent.

Finding My Way is your basic boogie rock thing, with surprisingly good chops but a sort of derivative G - D - A thing and some conventional blues licks, as well as some primal "oh yeah" stuff. The Garden is a quieter thing, although it has more dynamics, and a main riff that's pretty unique and has more of Lifeson's imprint on it. Good song. But the two are so very different.

Some of us middle aged folks might be just fine with claiming the earnest lessons of treasuring your memories and all that; others (not talkin' 'bout you, Lucas) might be more about giving the volts to the young pissy-vinegary whippersnapper part of themselves that still lurks behind the crows feet and the spare tire and the sore knees.

Yeah? I thought of it simply as liking one more than the other. One’s fun to me while the other is average and slightly cheesy.

In the hands of a more limber lyricist, The Garden could have been great .. The subject is, obviously, universal but Neil's take on the inevitable comes across as heavy handed and clumsy ..

I think his approach and the meaning is very sincere - he probably agonized over every single word - but in doing so, just sort of lit a spotlight on his own personality .. The end result for me is not sobering, but just sort of eye rolling

The gut wrenching aspects life has tossed my way are not captured in Neil's grade school lyrics

I voted for Finding My Way, although I graded it a little lower than The Garden. Finding My Way- B+ The Garden- A- I rated The Garden a little higher because it's a little more sophisticated lyrically (to my ear) and I think it's beautifully arranged. Finding My Way is more of a basic rock song. However, I can (and do!) listen to Finding My Way, any time, whereas with The Garden I have to be in a more thoughtful mood- sometimes I don't feel like hearing it. So Finding My Way- it's a go to song anytime!

Higher grade but you prefer the other. Interesting!

The Garden pretty easily. Finding My Way is a great tune, but it succeeds at a much simpler goal than The Garden does, even if it accomplishes that goal just as well.

Here’s last year’s Rush debut vs Clockwork Angels thread which included the modern classic “Johnny, what instrument do you play?” by Steve Smith:

Cornball and Dour are my favourite mid-American comedians from 1953! I loved their Corn Flakes jokes and shameful ethnic stereotypes.

Johnny plays guitar,

Geddy plays bass,

Steve Smith jumps in

All over the place,

Everybody have you read this crazy thread?

Talkin’ ‘bout movies

Ladyboys and manly men

f***s up, apologizes

“I won’t act like that again”

Poor Steve’s off his head, pop goes this thread!

And every time I wonder

Where he was coming from

I get a pain in my brain ‘Cause no answers come.

And every time I wonder

Where the thread went wrong,

Well the finger of blame is pointing at that sad dong.

(Ding-dong!)

Johnny played the bagpipes

Trailer played the bong

The forum’s way more fun

When we all get along

Hey everybody have you heard? Don’t be a turd!

No matter how shitty it was/is, it at least has a chorus and a bridge so was an old-school pop song.

Both Zager & Evans and Mungo Jerry’s odious offerings were devoid of anything but a repetitive attempt at a melody - although to be fair to Mr. Mungo, I guess that song could be sort of a blues.
