If you haven't heard of this band, check them out! I interviewed them in connection with the release of their new album:

I was thinking of creating a thread for them as the new album got closer to release. You, me and Segue will probably be the only people in this thread though. More people should definitely give them a chance. There's something special about the band.

Discovered the frontwoman used to be a Jehovah's Witness.

I love her even more. She rebelled against her mum and is slaying it!

Haven't played the new album yet. I shall though!

Certainly can't say they sound like anyone else that's for sure. New musical discoveries like this are always exciting.

I thought Winter sounded like early Lacuna Coil and Opeth.

And that was after trying hard to pin down a sound they reminded me of.

Looking forward to this new one!

I do love when a big old middle finger is given to religion. My brother and I did that to our catholic upbringing twenty years ago when our mom died from cancer. The new album isn't officially out for a few weeks. I think it's the first friday in March.

That describes their sound well. But they definitely got their own thing going on. Not gonna shy away from saying it, having a black woman as a singer in a metal band is certainly something different that helps them.

I left the Jehovah's Witnesses three months the ago.

And yes, her rich, soulful voice adds something new and beautiful to this style of metal, and she is very beautiful and in my opinion sexy as well.

It's a good thing they're opening for Epica in the UK. That's exactly the kind of band they should be opening for. Hopefully they can get something like that in North America on this tour cycle.

Oceans Of Slumber deserve everything coming there way. I haven't felt this strongly for a band like this in years. I hate that they may get labelled as a female fronted metal band, because they are so much more than that. This band deserves to be on a level with Mastodon or Opeth, and their frontwoman is more than a pretty face, she is an exciting, vibrant singer and I will say she might actually be the best in the business right now, especially from the crop of new bands.

They could be giants. They should be. And musically, they are impressive.

They are much better than Epica. They really are. They sound refreshing.

I almost got in trouble for this interview. We usually go through a media relations company, but couldn't agree on a time for an interview, and when we did, I sat in front of the computer with Skype opened and for some reason we couldn't connect. I noticed that their Facebook page was run by their drummer, so I approached him directly and got the answers to my questions. The media relations company was really upset.

Well, the drummer was fine with it and answered the questions, so what do they have to be upset about?

They get paid to connect artists with the press, and I bypassed them. All in the best interest of my public!!! *Cough* sarcasm *Cough*

Ah, always interesting to hear how those things really work. As music fans it's easy to forget sometimes that there's a whole business side to it as well.

There´s that...and there´s also the vanity side of things. I´m not saying it was the case with this band, but certain artists will only give you interviews if you´re EXTREMELY kind to them in the album reviews. The bigger they get, the more sensitive they get.

After one listen I really like the new album. My only issue is with the production. On the last album Cammie's voice was clear and soared above everything and carried the songs. Now she's more buried in the heavy mix. Not what they should be doing with her. Hopefully after a few more listens things will start to sound clearer to me.

Still a very good album 8/10.

First listen is 6/10. But like all albums I love, I know this is just the start! It's definitely going to grow on me!

I rated pretty high because I have the feeling that it's one of those albums that I will like more and more with each listen. Dammit why do some bands have to create so many layers lol.

I will say I love the production. Cammies voice sounds like a texture rather than a focal point, it's the human energy in an otherwise cold fronted attack on the senses.

It reminds me of nineties gothic metal in that sense, where at times vocals would dual with the insteuments. And a voice like Cammies pierces through everything.

I'm playing the album again and it's really blowing my mind. Even more so than the first time...its getting so much better with every spin!

Last time I felt this enthusiastic about a new album was last year's Crack Up by Fleet Foxes, but the album that last made me feel this much emotion on a first day listen was Endless Forms Most Beautiful in 2015.

This might top that, and even match Lacuna Coil's Delirium for emotional impact!

I completely get what they're going for with how the vocals were handled. I was just a disappointment on first listen after how well produced it was on the last album. They are conveying something much darker on this one and the vocals are done in a way to make the songs more impactful. Edited by J2112YYZ

I had the same reaction as you the first spin. But the second play it is clicking more, and it captures an almost live feel, and again I am reminded a little of The Gathering here (Mandylion in particular), but this is far more polished.

They deserve to be noted as a great band, and not just noticed for the pretty face at the front. The music really encourages that too, this is a BAND.
