I didn't respond to Segues post because I had nothing to add. He told his own perspective and what he said was very well articulated and accurate. Edited by fraroc

Kiss when Gene is singing ... but Paul ... well he's on my mt. Rushmore

I don’t mind Gene but I agree that Paul’s the better singer.

How about singing God of Thunder though? At first thought I went with, “Nah, it’s Gene’s baby.” But then there’s this:

((Keep in mind that it’s just a demo. I wouldn’t want this as a final version BUT I CAN imagine Paul doing justice to this song in a completed song))

In the book "Shout It Out Loud: The Story of Kiss's Destroyer and the Making of an American Icon", Bob Ezrin talks about when Paul brought God Of Thunder into the sessions, he ( Bob Ezrin ) insisted that it become Gene's signature song - and that Paul was extremely upset with that ..

It was a huge part of the developing of each member's identity - on the prior studio album, Dressed To Kill, Gene was still writing songs like "Two Timer" - just call me a three time loser, that's all I'll ever be, 'cause my baby's such a two timer . . "

So next up is God Of Thunder, and the rest is history !!

cool ... I'll have to listen later can't right now ... I've always thought Gene uses a bit of a trick on his low growl ... sort of a falsetto but low ... kind like pee wee Herman haha

as far as Paul ... in the mid 80s I really felt like he was the best of the hair metal singers

James Hetfield

Nope. This is just plain wrong. Mustaine, yes. Hetfield, hell no.

And those of you who have said Brian Johnson or Gene Simmons...I just scratch my head to those.

To me, Mustaine sounds like one of my buddies just screwing around on vocals by trying to sound menacing in front of quality instruments...

You take a mortal man

And put him in control

Watch him become a god

Watch people’s heads a’roll

A’roll, a’roll

Kinda like mastodon. It fits the music.

The more polished he became the more he sucked.

Rust in peace was his vocal sweet spot but i prefer the more aggressive sfsgsw and peace sells.

Liar!

To me, Mustaine fits the music like my old flatmate Randy fits Megadeth. He actually had a broad vocal range and did a great imitation of Mustaine BUT ultimately, Randy was just f***ing around being a goof.

I've always found it easy to a solid Mustaine imitation. You really don't need to know shit about how to sing to do that voice which Dave has proven over the years.

He's got a pretty high voice, but otherwise yeah anyone could basically do what he does. Thing is though he had the guts (hair-brained genius? dim-wittedness?) to actually do it in the first place. I think it panned out rather well for him.

Mastodon for sure. They have 3 not-excellent singers and Troy Sanders is easily the weakest link, yet he sings the most. Still love them though.

Weird. I really like Mastodon for the vocals - not saying they're at the same level as Queen, but I like how they all have very distinctive voices, and many of the tunes feature them all. Mastodon is another one of those bands who get a lot of shit for expanding their range beyond the super heavy stuff, and writing more dynamic, accessible tunes. I agree that their vocals aren't always successful live . . . but there are lots of bands like that.

Not necessarily a great band, but how about The Flaming Lips? Actually, as bad a singer as Wayne Coyne is, I think it contributes part of the charm to the band a little bit.

I do like some of their older stuff "Soft Bulletin", "Mystics" and "Yoshimi". I'm not sure I've ever heard them mentioned on TRF.
