Speaking of theater experiences, I saw Prophecy in 1979 and that one remains one of my favorites

It had everything a 12 year old boy could love

One of my bros & I still talk about the cheesiness of Prophecy. At the time, we thought the ending was the greatest thing ever.

I sent him that last image last year as a joke. 40 years of reminiscing about that mutant bear!

One of the greatest kill scenes EVER !!

Ah yes, the adventures of Capt Nolan and Bo Derek’s leg!

I saw this in the theatre it with my dear old dad. We had a good time. I ran out the next day and bought the damn book.

Better than Moby Dick - Led Zep or otherwise!

Orca was filmed in Newfoundland, which had a similar vibe to where I grew up, so it was easy for me to connect with this film.

Same with Jaws. My favourite movie. Yes, even better than Old Yeller (where’s the remake of that? Was it Cujo?)

Jaws 2, while lacking the ghost of Quint and nerdy Hooper was a pretty good sequel. At least 3 stars for Roy Scheider! Come on!

Jaws 3 sucked and Jaws 4 does not exist. Nope. Not at all. La la la la la..oh god, Mrs Brody’s hair in that movie...la la la la la.

I would probably be a lot richer if it wasn't for Japan!

Glad to keep the Japanese Economy stimulated thanks to compact discs and blu-rays that the USA won't press!!

I got my Japanese Blu-Ray pressing today of "ORCA!" One of the most underrated movies of all time!! Bo Derek is in this flick man! She loses one of her hottest body parts in this movie.

Amazing soundtrack.

"Orca" truly is the real sequel to "Jaws."

I am so old man I saw "Orca" in the theater when I was a kid. It blew my mind just like "Jaws!"

It's amazing how you can see the limp, wilted dorsal fin in this movie.

The Orcas stuck in captivity are and were all depressed.

I am sure many of you have seen "Blackfish."

Damn it makes me mad and sad.

I am not a liberal or an activist but I love orcas.

I love this movie of revenge.

But in real life I fuckking HATE SEA WORLD now! They should go out of business!

Hypocritically I grew up going there. I had Marine World USA in Redwood City in the Seventies.

I had Marine World Six Flags in Vallejo Ca which is now just a ghetto for rollercoasters and thugs.

I've been to the San Diego Sea Wold probably 30 times in my life.

My parents took me. I took my ex wife and girls.

Heck, I was going to study marine biology. I wanted to major in it so Sea World gave me a free tour behind the scenes. Scripp's Institute was also involved.

Anyway as I was always obsessed with the ocean and orcas and dolphins my path ended there.

So anyway, back on topic.....

"ORCA" is obviously one of the greatest underrated movies in the world.

It's all good!

I am still an ocean guy.

Hoping to retire young so I can live in Coronado California.

The Seals train there. NAVY BABY!

SUPPORT THE TROOPS!

LOVE AN ORCA!

I am OUT!

So very cool to hear your thoughts on this, Brother! I've always been fascinated by the ocean myself and grew up on The Undersea World Of Jacques Cousteau! Remember that one? It was even narrated by the golden-voiced Rod Serling! Any good doco about the ocean comes on and I am there, front and center, especially if it's about sharks, whales, or (my favorite) squid and octopus. Especially giant squid, now there's a fascinating creature and I'm glad they finally caught one of those on camera recently. Now there needs to be an expedition to find and film collossal squid. Speaking of, I read a very cool acccount a few years ago. A Navy submarine was put in drydock about 6 years ago. When they were inspecting the rubber nose cone, they found chitin hooks embedded in it. Now, squid have either chitin teeth or hooks in the suction cups of their tentacles for gripping prey, but the hooks the found in the sub's nose cone were much bigger than the hooks found in any known species of squid. The estimate was that this squid had to be about 150 feet long! They need to go out and find that thing, too! Remember: we know more about the moon than we do about the deep ocean.

About Blackfish, I saw it, too after Les Stroud recommended it on his website and I too was out raged by how we treat those beautiful animals. I'm not a liberal activist either, but I agree: no more captive orcas! There's another documentary called The Cove about how the Japanese fisherman periodically round up dolphins and drag them into a shallow cove and just slaughter them wholesale. It will enrage you and it will make you cry but watch it regardless. Everyone should see it. These fishermen are violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act and we should send in the Coast Guard and round their asses up and drag them off to be thrown in jail!! They also process and sell the dolphin meat and several Japanese kids who've eaten it are suffering from mercury poisoning. Now with the Fukushima radiation leak, who knows what they're consuming in the fish and/or dolphin nowadays?

Great post, Earl! Thank you!

P.S.: Yeah, Orca is a pretty great movie. It's got Richard "King Arthur" Harris for Pete's sake! And yeah, I've had a crush on Bo Derek ever since I saw 10 in the theater! :D

Love Orca. Own the DVD. Saw it in the theaters as a kid then saw it again as a part of double feature with 1976's King Kong. Also saw The Prophecy many times as a kid.

The Last Shark. I may be one of the very few who saw this in the movie theater in 1981 (or 82 I forget when it had it's very very limited release as it was pulled from the theaters after they were sued over copyright infringement from the studio that brought us Jaws). Pure Jaws ripoff but such cheesy goodness. I own the DVD of this as well and my son laughs with me when we pop it one once in a while. Vic Morrow was classic posing as this films version of Quint.

Love the 70's schlock. Also Grizzly.....pure fun. Recently showed this to my son on Amazon prime LOL.

Orca was creepy. I prefer Jaws 2.

I saw Orca as a kid too. My dad took me and my older brother to see it. I don't remember much about it other than some of the gory scenes. Lol. I think maybe because there were no sequels to Orca it's been sort of lost in time.

Hahahaha!! I love your post my friend! I am so glad this thread is getting some love. "ORCA" is an amazing film.

It's so funny I wrote this thread while the movie was still playing in my living room.

I believe in my original post I mentioned how I grew up here as a little kid in the Bay Area and Marine Wold USA was actually in Redwood City first!

Sure enough! In the credits of the film they thank Marine World USA Redwood City!!

Vaportrailer! We both have connections to this film as kids!!!! YOU ROCK! THIS MOVIE RULES!

I love how you saw this movie your dad. Chica saw this movie with her dad. I saw this movie with my parents.

An amazing imprint on our brains! I absolutely love this movie. But yes JAWS is better but I love both!

Cheers!

OMG! YES! You are my brother too! I am so happy to have so many cool brothers and sisters on this forum after all the "stuff" I had to go through to prove my sanity. LOL!

It's all good!

Yes! We are all connected to the sea. I love your passion too for the ocean.

I am a lucid dreamer Jack. I dream of the ocean almost nightly. Yes, maybe I am crazy. LOL!

I am always in the ocean. Always on the beach with waves crashing around me and I'm covered in white foam. I swim with the orcas. I swim with the whales. I fly. I always swim into the ocean for safety in my dreams when the land or cities are under attack.

I movie dream. I lucid dream. I could write screenplays based on my dream patterns.

Not to get too deep but I think the ocean is my spirit guide.

When I go to Maui I love to boogie board and body surf in the ocean.

If feel confident and at peace in the ocean.

So I was in Maui last year and I was at my favorite southern beach. Big Beach in McKenna. I was body surfing in some killer gnarly waves. Zoe my awesome daughter caught a pic of me in a sweet tube. I think was on on a boogie board actually.

Anyway I was out there waiting for another wave and all of the sudden I see this transparent white ice cream cone head bobbing up and down in the water. This thing floated gracefully right by my chest! DUH!!! The light bulb went off in my head!

It was a BOX JELLYFISH!!!

I slowly swam away from that translucent vanilla ice cream cone and warned everyone else in the water! I believe the box jelly is the second deadliest creature on the Earth! That jelly swam right by my chest!!

So I alerted everyone else near the box and they were tourists from other countries. I told them to stay away! Very dangerous jellyfish. They looked at me and laughed thinking it was a cute creature.

I bolted out of the ocean.

I was done.

I survived.

Amazing.

I was done.

I survived.

Amazing.

Wow, very cool. I'm righ there with you: water is my element. When I was living in Wilmington, NC. I would go to the beach whenever I had time and the weather was nice and swim four miles, it was how I kept in shape. I did this, must have been fifty or sixty times but one day I was just plowing through the water, minding my own business and all of a sudden BOOM! I got rammed in the ribs. I turned around and saw a dorsal fin and the tip of a vertical tail. As best I can remember if was a ten-footer. Not sure what the species was. It's fin and back were brown so i'm fairly sure it was a bull shark. Anyway, after I had been frozen in place for about 4 seconds. I stood up in the water and slowly backed up all the way until I was on the shore. I kept my eye on the shark for as long as I could. It hung out for about 30 seconds (30 seconds of sheer terror, the longest of my life) amd it swam in a slow semi-circle and was probably trying to figure out if I was food or not then turned around and disapppeared. I don't know what attracted it to begin with. I had heard that sharks liked yellow so I wore gray swim trunks. My swim stroke was steady and rhythmic with no hard splashing. I'm pretty sure it saw me and just wanted to see what I was. It rammed me pretty hard, too. The spot came out in a bruise and my side was sore for about 36 hours. After that I joined the YMCA and used their pool! :D

OMG!

That bull shark recognized Aubrey the survivalist, zombie slayer so it didn’t mess with him any further!
