Segue Myles
I do prefer clean vocals but i've come to appreciate unclean. Still and all i can't shake the feeling that it just sounds like i'm being belched at, lol Mick I guess everything has its place...and sometimes that place is the garbage! ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c55ybIOGEeU&sns=em :laughing guy: :laughing guy: :laughing guy: See that's what i hear most times a long belch. i know it takes skill. but sometimes it just sounds silly, lol Mick I went to small club last year to see a mix of bands, mostly metal. I had never heard of any of those bands as they were locals in a city I had never been before (Nagoya). I just went because it was a live gig and near my beer site. Anyway, most of the metal bands’ vocals sounded like this: ARRAWWRAWWW-ARRAWWRAWWW-ARRAWWRAWWW-ARRAWWRAWWW... ..with a chorus of: ARRAWWRAWWW-ARRAWWRAWWW-ARRAWWRAWWW-ARRAWWRAWWW... Most of those bands would’ve been halfway decent if they didn’t have lead singers. ;) But you don't get it! If you like to understand what the singer is saying, Then you're a fake metalhead and you like Bon Jovi and Poison! I can hear the lyrics of most screaming vocalists who are good at it. You're just a bore again. Whining because someone likes what you don't like.

Mosher
I listen to a lot of metal (as well as a lot of everything else), and I really like a lot of bands with unclean vocals. This was an acquired taste, but I get the effort involved and I can tell when someone is good at it and when they just do it because they're 'supposed to'. All of that said, I would prefer that every band sang clean. It doesn't have to be pretty, certainly not operatic. It can be gruff, angry, and still clean. It can be low, deep, and still clean. Now, occasionally a growl for purpose works, but it works best when it at least has a clean counter point. Metal 'fans' can say what they want. I listen to the growls and I'm fine with it, but clean- to me at least- is almost always better.
Fordgalaxy
A long time ago, I guy I used to work with had a great description of these "dirty" vocals. He went to a concert of some variety and when I saw him the next day and asked him about it, he said the music was good but it sounded like the singer stuck a mic in his mouth and growled. NAILED IT!
thirteen
The older I get the less I listen to metal. Amon Amarth is pretty much the only metal that has connected with me in the last 10 years.I'm more of a 'classic' rock + 'old' metal fan - Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rainbow.Back in the 90's I also loved Alice in Chains, Type O Negative and Danzig. With the right music, there's something powerful and primal about a good growl. It just sounds and feels right.IMO Amon Amarth is currently the best example of such a thing. Apparently, in fraroc LaLa Land it is. I didn’t like Timberlake’s halftime Super Bowl performance. I got it though. I don’t like a lot of hip hop and modern country music. I get it though. I don’t like fried eggs. I get that others love them though.See how this works? Also, I already said I’m no Bon Jovi fan. Look, here it is: I’m no Bon Jovi fan but I’ll take these vocals over some over the top growling any day. Hell, I only mentioned Bon Jovi because YOU did in your original post. Maybe, you don’t get it. That is, you don’t get that it’s possible for others to dislike something because the qualities of that thing don’t appeal to the person.
