February 15th, 1975 - forty three years ago today - Rush release FLY BY NIGHT and debut "the new guy" Mr Neil Peart ..

A landmark, and to this day, one of my favorite albums of all time

"By-Tor & the Snow Dog" was inspired by Rush roadie Howard Ungerleider's story of him staying at the house of Anthem Records manager Ray Danniels, where Danniels' German Shepherd growled at him, and a tiny dog also owned by Danniels tried to jump on him. Ungerleider told the band members about the incident, which they found hilarious

Fly By Night was also the first of a long series of albums with producer and fourth member Terry Brown

Artist Eraldo Carugati's painting that graces the cover is iconic

HAPPY 43rd FLY BY NIGHT !!

Fly By Night is the heart and soul of the RUSH catalogue! It has classics like the title track, Anthem, Snow Dog, Beneath, Between &Behind, In the End and underrated gems like Making Memories and Best I Can. :haz: :rush:

Overall, it’s my favorite of the first three albums. :blaze:

I go back and forth with Caress of Steel, so it's kind of too close to call for me. I really like those epics.

I like Bastille Day more than anything off Fly By Night.

But I also like By-Tor more than Necromancer and Lamneth.

There’s nothing as bad Rivendell on CoS BUT there’s more fun on FBN for me. Like i said though, overall.

By-Tor is a self-contained compact epic more like Xanadu and . The CoS epics are more sprawling and disconnected with many disparate passages like 2112 and Hemispheres, so it's which appeals to you most. A song like Natural Science is somewhere in between these epic styles, both with multiple parts yet within a compact framework.

Okay, since you mentioned them all in one package, I’ll rank them all.

1) Natural Science

2) Xanadu

3) Hemispheres

4) 2112

5) By-Tor

6) Necromancer

7) FoL

Note: I love or like them all and #1 and #2 are my #1 and #2 Rush songs of all time. Hemispheres and 2112 would likely be top 10 or close to it. Tough group.

3. Xanadu

4. Fountain of Lamneth

5. Necromancer

6. Natural Science

7. By-Tor

Cygnus X-1 part 1 needs to be in there along with La Villa. Although it has no words its still a long epic song!

Yeah, you’re probably right. And in that case, I’d go like this:

1) Natural Science

2) Xanadu

3) La Villa

4) Hemispheres

5) 2112

6) Cygnus X-1

7) By-Tor

8) Necromancer

9) FoL

Even By-Tor is last on my list, it's still a great song, it's just that's a tough group right there.

In my newest list, #1-5 are A+ songs. The remaining four are A or A-. So little between them in regards to which I like more.

Aye!

I'm going through a little Rush binge right now. The last few days have been synth-era.

Today I've listened to the debut, Fly By Night and right now I'm listening to Caress of Steel. We'll see how far we get today. But I agree FBN is the best of the first 3 albums. And Anthem is one of my favorite songs by them from any era.

We need an even 10 on the epic list, so I'm adding Jacob's Ladder to the fray

1) Cygnus X1

2) The Necromancer

3) Jacob's Ladder

4) 2112

5) By Tor

6) Hemispheres

7) Natural Science

8) Xanadu

9) La Villa

10) Fountain

Hard to rank these .. all of 'em are A and A+

This album in my opinion was the start of Rush. The first Album was great but was really Lee, Lifeson and Rutsy. Introducing Neil on drums and lyrics was a paradigm shift.

Hemispheres

La Villa

2112

Xanadu

Natural Science

Cygnus X1
