A steaming pile of synth-shite.

Signed,

Alex Lifeson's guitar.

I hear more up-front guitar on Grace than Signals.

But more in the style of The Edge or Andy Summers. Not a bad thing, per se, but different from what people were used to. GUP has no “rippers” like The Analog Kid or Digital Man.

But every song is better than those two.

Analog Kid has a killer chorus. Shit verses. Digital Man is bad.

No, see, that's just it. There is no song on GUP that is better than any song on Signals.

Come on now. I love Signals (top 4 Rush album for me), but there are a few tunes on P/G that smoke some of the lesser tunes on Signals.

Get a hold of yourself!

Signed,

Between The Wheels, Afterimage and Red Sector A

See, there's the problem. There are no "lesser songs," on Signals. OK, maybe Chemistry. Even still, I can't think of one song on GUP I like more than it.

Between the Wheels is overrated i'm sorry. As is GUP as a whole.

never could get into it.

Mick

And I feel Hold Your Fire is criminally underrated in Rush fandom circles.

Grace Under Pressure was a polarizing release as well. I remember all the older school Rush fans praying for a return to Moving Pictures or before that....and bam Grace Under Pressure comes out and that wonderful Bar-Mitzvah photo on the back of the album jacket with Geddy's mullet in all it's glory hit the shelves. Afterimage was released as a single as well. Old school Rush fans were headed for the exits, while I basked in this albums brilliance. I love the cold feel of this album. It just has a cold war 80's dread to it's vibe.

I really love this record more and more as I grow older.

Such a great album. A soaring production achievement. To think they could sound like this just 6 short years after Moving Pictures and 10 years after Hemispheres. As a musician I was astounded by the production on this record. And while I know Alex was getting a little frustrated that the guitars were being melded with the Geddy's keyboards, some of his most brilliant guitar work came on this album. Force 10, Open Secrets, Mission, Turn The Page.....damn. Such great texture and some snapping solo's. Alex sure made his misery during this phase of the band sound amazing. They took the keyboard/synth thing as far as they could and this album was a wonderful culmination and end of an era for the band.

This is why Rush is so interesting. Their "Different Stages" of the band is just so great to listen to over and over and over. That is the definition of progressive rock and why they are the true Godfathers of progressive rock. Their entire catalog epitomizes what a progressive band is supposed to do. Stretch their sonic landscapes and push through walls.

Brilliance.

You know what really upsets me?

they only played Prime Mover once. And that was on the HYF tour.

that song smoked live. wish that have pulled it out at least once more.

It would have been great to hear that one again as well as Turn The Page (which I know was a technical bear to pull off live for Geddy). When they broke out Mission on the Snakes tour I was in heaven. One of the great Rush songs of all time.

I wasn't quite headed for the exits yet, but GUP was the first album I bought on the date of release and wasn't in love with immediately. It's grown on me over the years, but I don't love it. PoW was the album that made me think, "well, this is who they've become now." For me, that album was like realizing a girlfriend you were crazy in love with had become a different person.

Signals is easily better than GuP, for production alone. Yeah Al's guitar may be more audible on GuP, but what guitar is audible on Signals is far more awesome than most of what's on GuP.

Still, GuP isn't terrible, just a few lackluster songs, samey arrangements, and really muted production. I'd take DEW, RSA, and BTW over Chem and Countdown, much as I do like those two. Heck, I'd might toss in TBE or TEW for good measure. Killer rhythm work on TEW. Shame it isn't recorded better.

That's the other thing. Al's guitar sound on GUP kinda grates on me.

I've always really enjoyed Countdown. The accompanying video during the Signals tour was pretty cool.

I don't like Red Sector A at all.

Not fact just your opinion. To my ears, Signals is the bands worst album up to that point, and worst of the eighties.

Isn't "in my opinion" implied in every post on a site like this, particularly when we're talking about what is "good?"

The band's worst album of the eighties, or ever really, is Hold Your Fire. They went up from there, although they never got back to great until CA.

Yea songs i really dislike from Gup

Body Electric

Red Sector A

Red Lenses

Kid Gloves

The rest are ok......with the 2 standouts if i HAD to pick being Distant Early Warning and Afterimage

Mick

I listened to it yesterday. I'm a fan, so I enjoy it. But I have to agree, it's just not an inspiring album.

I'm listening to A Show of Hands. The songs from that era do pick up something live.

Despite the 80s heavy set-list, I quite enjoy ASoH (at least the DVD). A good, well-paced set list iirc.

Dunno if it’s the Ludwig drums, but that particular Neil solo is one of his best. He’s actually improvising a fair bit of stuff and seems to be enjoying himself. It’s nice to see the drummer having fun. How can you not have fun playing the drums?

Big Money and Marathon sounded pretty damn awesome as well.

Guess I’ll have to check out the CD sometime.

It's just not the band I fell in love with. It's too much like a lot of bands from that era that I enjoy hearing a song from, but not a whole album in one sitting. :)

T1. Subdivisions

T1. The Analog Kid

3. Losing It

4. Digital Man

5. New World Man

6. Countdown

7. The Weapon

8. Chemistry

I agree with this one. I was blown away at the Clockwork Angels tour when they did losing it live. I wasn't a huge fan of that song until then and that brought it way up for me.

I'll give you that Analog Kid riff, but Digital Man? As for GUP Kid Gloves is probably the closest thing to an old school Alex guitar part, at least the arpeggio based portion. And that solo...

One of the unique things about Rush is that their sound changed so much from album to album that they each tend to have a very distinctive 'flavor'.

Occasionally however there is a song on an album that sounds like the album that directly preceded it or followed it.

For example, I always thought Vital Signs sounded like it could've been on Signals (something I definitely could not say about any other song on MP).

I always had a somewhat similar impression of Kid Gloves; that it sounds like it could've been on Signals, which is something I definitely could not say about any other song on GUP.

1. Subdivisions (epic)

2. Digital Man (oh, that bass!!!)

3. Analog Kid (great imagery, love Alex's solo)

4. Losing It (tend to like Rush songs that stray from their norm, whatever that is.)

5. Countdown (quirky)

6. New World Man

7. The Weapon (don't like it as much as many other Rush purists)

8. Chemistry
