The most overrated bands

This topic is fun. And it represents this famous quote: "Opinions are like assholes..."

Overrated bands and music artists IMO:

U2

KISS (overhyped is a much better term than overrated)

Motley Crue (see KISS)

Nirvana (their music output always struck me as average or decent)

Pantera

Prince

Michael Jackson

Ramones

AC/DC (good, but not one of the greatest rock bands as many people think)

Radiohead (overrated by critics and RYM users)

Slayer

The Cure

Kanye West

Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac with her

Velvet Underground (overrated by critics, hipsters and RYM users)

C'mon TK, after their first three albums, KISS as a band was dead broke, having toured non stop for three years and not seeing one check from any of the albums .. Upstart Casablanca Records was about to fold and manager Bill Aucoin was in the process of suing Neil Bogart and Casablanca ..

A groundswell of fans at the grassroots level and the dedication the band and its 4 roadies put in is what gave them fame .. Not to mention a catalog of great rock and roll songs that tapped into something no other band had to that point ..

Geddy himself has said that there has been no band that has worked harder than KISS ..

Naturally, when a band blazes a trail as KISS did in so many ways, the spotlight will follow .. I would not confuse "success" with "hype" ....

"Hype" is what a new movie receives upon its release ... Hype will carry nothing for 45 years

Hype will not place my dad's beat up, acid-washed, but still perfectly playable copy of Kiss Alive hiding on a shelf in our basement for me to find some 30-40 years later as one of the half a dozen records my parents didn't decide to sell, and the only one not kept because it was unopened and might have been worth some money. Hype won't explain why he kept that or why he passed it down to me when I started getting into records and music. Hype won't explain his happiness last Christmas when he opened up a Gene Simmons waffle maker from me. No, hype is not what makes Kiss so special.

I made the waffles hotter than hell, I can tell you that !!

Nirvana

Tool

Dave Matthews Band

Foo Fighters

All good bands, but certain fans and critics act like they are or were the 'be all' of music. Far from it.

I also forgot to mention Michael Jackson. He had one stellar album, set his hair on fire, self-cock-blocked Brooke Shields and then molested a bunch of kids. And people still won't shut up about him. Jeesh.

All I can say is this:

This is far from being my favorite Kiss song and I haven’t really been into Kiss for a long long time but I still enjoy a bit of them every now and then.

I just went through a binge a couple of weeks ago. The Creatures of the Night - Revenge run of albums might actually be their best stuff musically.

Thinking about this a little, it's not as off base as one might think. His Jackson 5 career was decent, and Off the Wall and Bad are both really good albums. Thriller is, of course, flawless. But after 1987 or so, his output was really spotty.

The grateful dead

Yep. Still have no idea why 300,000 people showed up to see them. Or was it Owsley acid they went to the concert for?

Guns and Roses

Nirvana

Bruce Springsteen

Bob Dylan

The Doors

Yea. Its amazing how Howard Stern loves Bruce, but made fun of Rush getting into the hall? My satellite subscription is up in April. F**k Howard.

Too lazy to go through the whole thread to see if they've been mentioned, but fukking Journey. The true definition of the term "butt rock".

I like Journey then and now!

Yup. Great musicians who wrote , for the most part, boring music.

Yes!!

Yes, is the band that got me to notice. Rush and Yes have some things in common. Style and a special sound that no one else has. To even mention Yes in the context is "Heresy".

You didn't get that I was saying "yes" to the guy's comment about the musicians in Journey being good but the songs being boring did you? My comment had nothing to do with the band Yes. While not a gigantic fan I totally recognize how good they WERE and said for a number of years they were HOF worthy.

Reading comprehension 101 dude. Might wanna check out a class.

And overrated = Def Lepard

No it doesn't. On Through the Night and High N Dry are fantastic. Pyromania is flawless. Hysteria and Adrenalize are both great albums. After that, you can argue their work took a step down. And at least in the 80s, they were an excellent live band.

Foolin' is songwriting genius.

They are overrated, don't argue with me.

Poison is as well and don't say differently.

Wouldn't there have to be one person who doesn't say "Poison aren't very good," in order for them to be "overrated?" Is there such a person? I've never come across one.
