sdhonda
The Beatles are definitely the most overrated band of all time, people ramble on about their influence on modern pop music, one person even went so far as to state that: "anything ever done in music was done by the Beatles first, even if the band came before them" which to me really displays the depths to how far the Beatles are worshiped. Sure they experimented, and had an influence on a great many bands, but definitely not all, or even most bands, The Rolling Stones were formed on the principle of being everything the Beatles weren't (the anti-Beatles if you will), and Jimmy Page owned a sitar before George Harrison ever did. What really upsets me was when the Beatles discography was released on iTunes a few years back, which introduced a whole new generation to the overrated pop that the Beatles are. Suddenly it was cool and "indie" to listen to the Beatles, and it wasn't the good psychedelic, experimental Beatles, it was the pop drivel from Beatlemania. People often accuse me of being a pretentious hipster, and state that I hate anything mainstream, and since The Beatles are the most mainstream band of all time, that's why I dislike them. I never like or dislike any music based on it's popularity, it is a fact that most (or even all) mainstream music of today is complete and utter shit, but I don't dislike it based on the fact that it's popular, my favorite album of all time is probably Dark Side of the Moon, which puts down any claims as such. I dislike the Beatles because they aren't musically talented, and their influence is blown way out of proportion. Ringo sat is constantly put on "Best Drummers of all Time" lists, even though he should be considered one of the worsts to ever pick up the instrument. Paul McCartney is one of the worst songwriters of all time, just look at his solo material, which leaves George and John, which are the only members I consider to be decent. Time to deal with the backfire... Hear Hear!

ILSnwdog
The Who. ACDC, Mumford and Sons, Muse, U2, Coldplay, Dave Matthews, Aerosmith, Justin Timberlake, Spice Girls, Tragically Hip Good list. The Who and AC/DC could never be overrated however.Same with the Tragically Hip. Along with The Who & AC/DC, they don't belong on that list. ILSnwdog
I wish more people could differentiate between not liking a band and finding them overrated. I don't care for the Beatles or Prince, but there is no denying that they both have made huge contributions to music. But just because I don't care for either in no way makes them overrated.

But I was indeed wrong each time... For the most part, at least. They have adequate musicianship, and more importantly, they were a huge influence socially. People loved their music, their music was innovative, and while it's debatable how many bands that were influenced by the Beatles had an altered sound in result (e.g. Deep Purple), we can know that they did cite them as a an influence. The Beatles are the most cited influence in music since the 60s. I can safely assume that. Hey, in many cases The Beatles were the sole reason why a musician was born (See: Jon Anderson). Tony R
I'd say Rush are over-rated by their fans. They are, to us, a great band but we look down on people who dislike them and dismiss their views as "ignorance". Practically every new album by established bands is over-rated. So that suggests that every established band is over-rated. End of thread. Edited April 8, 2013 by Tony R

It is physically painful for me to listen to their music. Zeppelin- I grew up with a dad and brother who are LZ FREAKS. I have heard every single studio album hundreds upon HUNDREDS UPON HUNDREDS of times. Put on any song, I guarantee I know all the words. I have seen every LZ dvd hundreds of times. I never want to hear ANY of their "popular songs" EVER AGAIN. NEVER. Their obscure stuff, I'm still ok with. but my god they are so incredibly overrated to me. ugh. Green Day- they can burn lol I DESPISE them. Bob Seger- all his stuff sounds the same, dude. Pearl Jam- CANNOT STAND Vedder's voice. blech. Nirvana- yeah not good to me. at all. Bruce S.- EW. I hate his music, but, no lie- anytime my husband hears even a split second of a Bruce song, he immediately goes "OH MY f*ckin GOD TURN THAT SHIT OFF!!! MY EARS!!! MY EARS!!!!!!!!!" My husband has a deep, deep hatred of Bruce's music. Just saying the name "Bruce" to him makes him shiver violently lmao. and the ONLY reason GNR isnt on my list is because I like the MUSICIANS from the band. Axl is a dick. Bon Jovi, White Snake, don't know many up to date "modern" stuff the kids listen to, all I know surprise the hell out of me when they appear on Conan or Fallon. What a contrast listen to them on mix radio and see these bands on tv looking like aged hippies with beards and bell bottoms .. yes i'm old and i don't care for todays music... it's over praised :codger: Edited April 9, 2013 by softfilter

Texas King
This topic is fun. And it represents this famous quote: "Opinions are like assholes..." Overrated bands and music artists IMO:U2 KISS (overhyped is a much better term than overrated)Motley Crue (see KISS)Nirvana (their music output always struck me as average or decent)Pantera Prince Michael Jackson Ramones AC/DC (good, but not one of the greatest rock bands as many people think)Radiohead (overrated by critics and RYM users)SlayerThe Cure Kanye West Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac with her Velvet Underground (overrated by critics, hipsters and RYM users)
HemispheresserehpsimeH
I really wish this hadn't been bumped. "Overrated" is such a useless term. So is "underrated" while we're at it. We already know music is subjective, but we attach these jackass terms for literally no reason whatsoever.
