Star Trek Discovery is a Dumpster Fire

I am having a hard time with the Klingons. Changing them so drastically makes no sense whatsoever. It's not a simple cosmetic change, it's a total redefining move. Plus the tone is all wrong. Call it what it is but it's not Star Trek.

it makes sense if you understand the background of lisciencing. It's been a problem throughout star trek. everything from The Motion Picture to the last episode of Voyager belongs to Paramount. That includes the klingon look. The old look belongs to DesiLou productions. But roddenberry owned the word. the name and the language. So in order to make the klingons look like TNG/DS9, it would cost CBS. Theyed have to pay paramount. Which doesn't seem like a big deal because both are owned by viavcom, but thats where it comes from. Thats why starting with the reboot movies the klingons were changed as well as the uniforms. In the reboot movies, although they use the gold/blue/red scheme, if you look at the uniforms they are different. same goes for the bridge layout and the technology. CBS can't make Discovery tech look like TOS because that belongs to desilou.

So, since they had to change the look of everything, they went back to the begining. Roddenberry wanted the klingons to look the way they do in Discovery. He wanted the romulans to look like the way the remans ended up looking. But the low budget of TOS ended up having the klingons with bushy eyebrows, shoepolish on the face, and foomanchu's. And the romuland looked vulcan because they already had ears made. The blue uniforms are meant to look like an evolution from ST:ENT -> Garth of Izar's uniform -> Discovery.

I don't mind the changes. And i am somewhat enjoying Discovery. Certainly better than that first season of Enterprise.

But this in not prime universe. It's a reboot regardless of what they say.

My understanding is CBS owns everything Desilou and that Paramount is no longer part of Viacom. Hence the “rights” dance that Discovery is doing.

I'm nitpicking about the Klingons. I think the show has bigger problems. But, they didn't simply re-design the Klingons, they changed the Klingons. It's like watching a cross between the Gorn and the Jem'Hadar. I find them distracting and annoying.

Love this show. Maybe makes sense as I never really cared too much for the other post-TOS Star Trek.

I got a new router and I’m watching again. The production values continue to impress. I’m not completely on board with the Katra travel stuff. At various times I feel like I’m watching Moore’s BG and not Star Trek.

I think Star Trek: Discovery has broken my dedication to Star Trek. I think I am done. I find it a chore to make it through a Discovery episode. Also JJ Abrams' misguided hack work with the reboot. Too much Trek that's not centered or focused on a foundation. Most of it bad. It simply assaults my senses.

I’m two weeks behind. So in Vaulting Ambition did we learn that Lorca from the “prime universe” is indeed the Lorca from the alternate universe? I’m confused. Maybe I need to rewatch that ending again?

Perhaps spoiler tags are in order? Anyway, the answer to your question is yes.

This could be a major problem for me going forward.

Lorca just appears out of nowhere and Star Fleet gives him a ship? Lorca II appears in Lorca Prime’s ready room, slits his throat and takes his command?

This whole show is indeed a dumpster fire. I like 3 or 4 characters and most of these episodes are not very good. SMG as Burnham is tough to watch and can't hold a candle to (dare I say it) even Sisko or Janeway.. Season 2 should just be Saru and Stammets flying around, with the MU Georigo in the brig with a dash of ghost of Culbert floating around.

Again, you know DSC is in trouble when you're constantly comparing it to Voyager and Voyager wins! :laughing guy:

After watching this series I was pleasantly surprised.

As a huge fan of Trek and what I believe it represents, I thought Discovery nailed it.

Closer in spirit to DS9, which was easily my favorite incarnation.

A lot of people seemed to miss that it touched on a wide array of ethical questions and therefore hated it. Oddly a lot of people thought it touched on too many liberal ideals, somehow missing that Star Trek has ALWAYS been about exactly that.

It's not everyday a show can be far too blatantly liberal while not having any liberal ideals at all. I think the first group was right, but unlike those in the first group I applaud the show for it because that's the spirit of Trek. The latter group may be ideologically more like me, but somehow have become mired in a past that could never have been lived up to.

All that said, I did have quibbles. I hate the new Klingons. The change was aggressively selfish on the part of the show, knowing that Trek fans on the whole, if they cared, wanted no change in the look. It just made no sense to make so many fans angry. I got over it, but it was a terrible idea.

I also hope the show does more exploration, rather than sneaking the discoveries into their season long narrative arcs, let them branch out more.

Their are interesting fringe characters. Develop them.

The biggest pluses were the acting and the character development. Sadly that development was restricted to only a few people. They need to expand it.

I'll also add that what seem to be the consensus fave episode of the series was in my opinion a terrible episode. 'What's Past is Prologue'. Exactly what I feared this Trek would be, 1980's action inanity. Thankfully the rest of the show was very very good.

The season finale was weak or needed more time to finish the story.

The more I watch TNG the more mad I get at what DSC is. It could've been so much better.

It really is heartbreaking to watch Star Trek devalued as Discovery has done. What was once an ambitiously thoughtful, high concept vision of humanity's future; is now generic, grimdark, wartime sci-fi jenkum.

The Orville is the best thing going for Star Trek now.

From Ain't It Cool News

Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” and “Star Trek Into Darkness” movies, will now serve as showrunner on CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Discovery.”

Exiled from the series are “Pepper Dennis” creators and season-one showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts.

I take the departures as great news; the first season of “Discovery” was awful, worse even than the first two seasons of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

Apparently others share my relief. “Insiders also stress that Berg and Harberts became increasingly abusive to the Discovery writing staff, with Harberts said to have leaned across the writers room table while shouting an expletive at a member of the show's staff,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.” Multiple writers are said to have been uncomfortable working on the series and had threatened to file a complaint with human resources or quit the series altogether before informing Kurtzman of the issues surrounding Berg and Harberts. After hearing rumors of HR complaints, Harberts is said to have threatened the staff to keep concerns with the production an internal matter.”

Also departed from the series is screenwrite Akiva Goldsman (“Batman & Robin,” the “Lost In Space” movie, “The Dark Tower”). Goldsman, according to the Reporter, “is said to have had a management style and personality that clashed with the writing staff.” I regard Goldsman’s departure as great news as well.

The first five episodes of season two are already near completion. The show is expected to take a production hiatus following the completion of 2.5.

Kurtzman, credited with co-writing the “Star Trek Discovery” pilot script with “Dead Like Me”/“Pushing Daisies”/”Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller, got his start in television writing scripts for “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” before moving on to “Jack of all Trades.” He co-wrote 10 episodes of Abrams’ “Alias” before co-creating Abrams’ “Fringe.” Without Abrams he co-created “Sleepy Hollow.”

Outside Trek Kurtzman’s big-screen writing credits include “The Island,” “The Legend of Zorro,” “Mission Impossible III,” the first two “Transformers” movies, “Cowboys & Aliens” and “Amazing Spider-Man 2.” He directed and co-wrote 2012’s “People Like Us” and last year’s Tom Cruise vehicle “The Mummy.”

“Star Trek Discovery” is expected to return to CBSAA next year.

Anybody seen Hell on Wheels? Meet the new captain Pike.

One of my favorite shows. Anson Mount is great.

I'm hoping that with the house cleaning, and the fact that they started badly over budget, we get a few more smaller scale bottle shows that focus on character and story more than pizzazz and flash.
