I'm gonna admit that Dirt is probably the better album and more involving listen, but I prefer CP any day. Only one song on Dirt outranks much of CP, being Rooster.

Grunge to me, just sounds dated. It was a necessary era in the musical timeline but it was so morbidly depressing. Thank God the resurgence of metal happened! Counterparts wins against the whole Genre and it ain't that great...

I agree that grunge is depressing as hell. I liked it at the time but yes it’s very dated. Counterparts wins for me.

Somewhat amusing that the whole grunge era is seen as humorless and depressing. However, this is one of those albums that is. Staley sounds like he's almost celebrating his decline into heroin. Aside from the awesome sounding Would?, no thanks.

Counterparts.

Dirt is just an emotionally taxing and draining listen. Rooster is the only song on the album with any spark of hope, and it's still pretty downtrodden. I don't care for CP too much in the grander scheme of things, but I probably care for it more than Dirt.

LOL Rush fans.

For me, the best song off Counterparts (whatever that is) MIGHT beat the best off Dirt (whatever that is).

But overall, Dirt bests Counterparts.

Additionally, the worst two off Counterparts (SoL & EG) are easily worse than whatever the worse two on Dirt are.

Tough albums to compare, really. But in terms of each band's catalog, Dirt is critical and Counterparts is mostly forgettable (compared to other albums).

I re listened to the first half of Dirt recently....well at some point the emotional taxation took a backseat to the music and well...yeah sorry it's better than CP. CP has The Speed Of Love, Between Sun And Moon, and Leave That Thing Alone where Dirt has Junkhead, Godsmack, and Sickman. The better written and performed songs clearly lie with AIC in the case of the worst songs on either, not to mention the best CP can offer is Double Agent, Cut To The Chase, Animate, and Nobody's Hero, where Dirt has Rooster (better than everything else here), Them Bones, Dam That River, Rain When I Die, Down In A Hole, and Would?
