Was lead guitarists/guitar solos better in the 70s or the 80s?

Yoou know i've been playing Animals to much lately. and praise be this album, BTW

Here's some of that good ol pedestrian playing for Fra Fra.

Mick

Also Gilmore. Gilmore Gilmore Gilmore. If you are not moved by his playing on like...literally anything in their heyday, there is little hope for your understanding of music.

Dogs is just incredible really, might be their greatest song. Idk why people think Echoes is better but perhaps I should spin it more to figure it out. In the meantime, this stands as Floyd's best sidelong piece to me.

Gilmour can make me tear up. no joke. NO guitarist in the 80's eveer did that.

Also Animals the entire album to me. is Gilmours shining moment guitar wise.

and.....i'll say it. Roger's best album lyrically.

I travel frequently to and from VT during the winter months. While riding through rural farmlands with snow covered fields, I put on Atom Heart Mother.

This Gilmour solo.... perfect for the scenery

Technique reared its ugly head and killed all the soul.

70s: I'm in pain, I'm angry, I'm lost

80s: look what I can do!

Yeah, ditch that self indulgent brooding crap and give me something more joyful and ambitious.

I wouldn't say that's 'loss of soul', I'd say that's a freeing of the soul.

Yeah, it’s a perfect album to me too. It’s so perfect that it kicked off the next two albums I listened to: WYWH then DSotM.

Those 3 are Pink Floyd’s Hemispheres, PeW, and MP to me.

My first First Floyd album was when i was 11....Dark Side. Knew nothing of it's reputation. i just bought it cause i loved the album artwork.

Then in order from there. Wish, Animals and the Wall.

80s: look what I can do!

Oh yeah? You can do 400 notes per minute? Well, I know some dude who can do 600! He's a master shredder! :eyeroll: :boo hiss:

Take this, 80s rock guitarists! —

If Spinal Tap had actually legitimately existed and that whole rockumentary was true, I don't think they'd be any less loved than Kiss. There are actually some good songs in there.

My first was actually Animals, lol. I still vividly remember getting through summer gym class between my freshman and sophomore years of high school listening to Animals, Crystal Ball, War, and Origin Of Symmetry (Muse). Good times for my music listening (not so good for having to take summer gym, blech!). By the time I got Dark Side a small part of me was like, "what, this is it?" But I came around pretty quick, it's another basically perfect album, just not as personal and affecting as Animals.

Also, WYWH...kinda overrated...and The Wall is terribly difficult to get into at first.

Okay so I admit there are a lot of great 70s guitarists.

But that does not change the fact that the very late 70s and 80s was when all the innovation happened.

You can NOT sit there and tell me that Eruption didn't change everything. From the sound of the guitar to the way it was played.

I'm sitting here. I'm suggesting that Eruption didn't change everything. I'm super glad not every guitar sounds like that, and not every guitar solo sounds like that.

I agree that Eddie has more feeling in his playing than your typical shredder.

It did change everyone's perception of what a guitar could do, yes, but as many guitarists that bought into that idea and achieved fame and success copying or extrapolating on EVH, many others found their own way. Let's not forget that arguably the most influential 80s band on the past nearly 20 years of music was pretty much U2, and The Edge most certainly didn't care a bit about what finger tapping or sweep picking was.

Oh i know many don't like Eagles......but Don Felder was another awesome 70's player.

Mick

And Joe Walsh.

Holy Shit! I'm living proof about Don Felder!

I saw Don Felder open up for REO SPEEDFAGON and STYX!

Don Felder BLEW REO AWAY!!!

Don was incredible! I had seventh row center. His white double neck guitar caught some sun glare that went right into my bewildered eyes! DON FELDER KICKED ASS!! Even Tommy Shaw came out on stage to jam with him! FUCKKING EPIC!!!

DON RULES!

JOE WALSH TOO!

Saw Joe at the same venue a year before Don.

It's crazy.

I've never seen The Eagles but I saw Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Don Felder at different times. All at the Concord Pavilion.

I am taking my parents to see The Eagles this Sept!

I think it's cool that Vince Gill and Deacon Frey are in the band.

PUMPED!

70's or 80's??? I can't decide tbh.

I divide lead guitar into two different eras:

BYJM (Before Yngwie J. Malmsteen) & AYJM (After Yngwie J. Malmsteen).

The Edge doesn't even crack most people's top 100s

And that possible truth doesn’t negate EP’s last sentence one bit.
